Today I happen to notice this larger puddle of oil under the truck.  Looking underneath it was coming from the PS pump and dripping at a rate of a drop every 30 seconds or so.  But why...?  The engine had been off for a day and no one was ever in the truck at any time doing anything like trying to turn the steering wheel or touching the brakes.  Thinking a hose let go, I eventually came to the conclusion that for whatever reason the PS fluid level raised up high enough to spill out the top and make a mess...with the engine off no less. :think:  Yes, the fluid level was very high.

 

Then an hour later when I was parking the 5th wheel back in its spot I felt this weird bump in the brake pedal when pushing on the brakes quickly.  Not every time but every couple times I pressed the pedal it would that weird feedback bump and the other times would be smooth pedal action.  The only way I can describe how it felt was if the pedal was slightly hanging up on something giving this slight initial bump in the pedals movement.

 

Could both of these be related?  The strange phenomenon of PS fluid deciding to climb up and out of the reservoir while the trucks sitting parked, and a brake pedal hiccup.

 

And just to clarify, the brakes work great and the steering feels fine with no noise...

    Basically, you want to unhook the steering box return line. Now cap the pump nipple to keep fluid in the reservoir. Now route the return line to a waste container. Now jack up the front axle. Now with

  • You could add a transmission filter in the power steering return line.  This would help keep contaminants from reaching the hydroboost and steering box.

Went ahead and installed a universal power steering fluid filter. Napa # PS351002, it also has a magnet and bypass valve for cold weather or if it plugs up.

Still remember even with the filter you still need to change the fluid every 30k miles. Then while you're there might as well change the filter. I've got to ask what did you pay for the filter?

Having a drain petcock would make this so much easier too...

I was unaware of a drain plug on the steering box.  I guess I'll have to look...

No. There isn't but it would be nice to have on there... :duh:

 

Give me a break in working from the front seat of the truck.

Yes, good advice, I will continue to change the fluid on schedule. The filter was $18.99 plus tax. They only had one in stock so I ordered another one for the '91. The Ford conversion already has one in the remote reservoir, it holds 3 quarts. I jacked it off one of my old IHC log trucks that was culled.

Actually driver seat. (Strange flip of the picture) When it's over 90*F outside you park in the sun trapped with the truck running so you have A/C and trying to work the website from the center console and smack out replies isn't exactly comfortable. Now I'm at home and comfortable in my big chair and normal keyboard and mouse. :)

As for the power steering system, I don't see any problem with doing a filter just remember this will need to be changed with the fluid every 30k miles. As for the drain plug if there was a way to drill and tap a plug in would be awesome it sure would make short work of drain, flush and fill. All I can say is the 30k mark worked out good for my steering box it was spotless inside no sludge and no serious wear at all just the input seal failed from rust particles. Kind of like my next problem of getting reservoir seal for my power steering pump. Rubber is starting to degrade... Ugh!

My truck is pretty much my office for now so i know what you mean. 92 out this way today, humidity about 90%. Need a break from this crap.

No kidding,  could have fooled me....

Installed the same filter in my '91 today, D-250 no hydro. I drained the pump out of the pressure line, turned the wheel lock to lock several times to purge the steering box and refiled, no flush. I started with a new quart of fluid and used 26 ounces, so it is a smaller system then the '01.

Completely empty 2nd gen system is just about 2 quarts. The steering gear box alone takes nearly a full quart to itself.

I couldn't stand the suspense so I picked up a new filter. I just pulled the old one off and it is not bad at all. I guess changing the fluid fairly regular kept it cleaner than I thought. I wonder if a guy could just wash the filter insert and reuse it, maybe at least once? I have about 1k miles on it.

Does that filter come apart and you can change filter elements? 

I wouldn't rinse anything unless it's SS mesh.
