Thinking I (want or need) more fuel filtering.  Right now no problems with airdog 95 or 100 (cant remember which) going from tank to airdog directly to vp44.  2 or 3 micron I believe.  Want to install a 8 or 10 micron before fuel goes thru airdog filter.  

In late 90's or 2000's at work some of our trucks had water and fuel filter that was plastic see thru, that you could just look at and see fuel drizzle down into plastic bowl or not.  Getting a visual on fuel came in handy to see if any fuel problems going on.  Like out of fuel, pump not working etc. ( I do have a fuel pressure gauge) never had a problem with cracking or leaking.  

I'm trying to find a system like that and small enough to fit up under bed near cab, next to airdog.

Anybody know of a filter system that's fits that description?

I have exactly what you described on my boat's fuel system.  It has a replaceable metal spin on filter down to 5 microns or so and then a see through plastic bowl with a drain valve screwed on to the metal spin on filter for water separation and viewing.  It's pretty much a standard marine setup.

When selecting a filter try to find one that will exceed flow rate specs of your lift pump so your additional filter doesn't become a restriction. If it were me I would put the fuel / water separation filter using a 10 or 30 micron element on the suction side of the lift pump and a standard 2 micron filter like a 1R0751 as a final filter on the pressured side of the lift pump. With some minor modification of my Airdog 100 I can use a CAT 1R0751.

 

I'm thinking this would work and will flow close to or more than 100 GPH depending on micron rating.

R90P is 30 micron

R90S is 98% @ 4 micron

R90T is 10 micron

Thanks folks... my next step is to see how common the filters are to get, and physical size measurements to see where it will fit.  My Cummins place doesn't have good selection of filters sold individually.  I'll look up the links that have been posted lately to see how online filter places have available.

I run the racor brand with the see thru bowl on both trucks. I like them because they are designed for the suction side and I designed a skid/ protection plate that swings out of the way when servicing the filter. The clear bowl has helped a few times. I used to have the self priming bulb on one of them but found air was building up in the rubber bulb you pump for priming so I went to a standard filter base.

How many gph are the filters used on that, obviously you're not having any problems with pressure. Just wondering if it's starving your lift pump.

They are both 90 GPH 30 micron.

My fuel pressure problem came from the new style regulator on the latest Raptor lift pumps. Thanks to Mopar1973Man, He suggested turning the new lift pump regulator up to 30 and then down to 7 then back to normal 19 or 20 at idle. That solved the erratic fuel pressure problem I kept having.

I run just the AirDog 150 with the 3um filter on the AirDog then a stock filter in the stock can. I'm not worried about protecting the AirDog 150 being the water separator is the prefilter for the pump. I don't have debris issues being I'm set up for 50k filter changes which is actually too early. The media of the Airdog filter might barely be dark by that time. The stock can will be slightly cleaner but not much.

Because it's after your airdog, and would be a plumbing nightmare to make it a pre filter.  Plus, as Mike pointed out, the water separator takes care of pre filtering for the pump.

In 13 years and 250k miles the pump had zero wear in my AirDog but the motor bearing failed after the shaft seal failed and pumped fuel in the bearing washing it out. Then the motor blew the fuse. The geo-rotor was fine and undamaged after 250k miles. 

 

Don't be changing your filters too early this is 15k miles as stated by the owners manual. The filter is still good.

I use CAT filters and heads and change whenever I can, but that's way less than the 500 hrs recommended CAT interval, I don't buy filters though

You might still cut the filter open and check the filter media condition. Like Dodge owners manual states 15,000 miles but I cut my AirDog filter open and found a near new filter yet. I kept expanding the interval till I reached 60k miles and found filter that is getting dirty looking. Still even that far out I never had any fuel pressure drop.
