I have a 02 Cummins H.O. 6 speed. I have the BHAF mod, 4'' exhaust, and I have the BD boost elbow ( not installed yet) and I'm looking at getting a tuner. My main concern is which style to go with. I could get a Edge EZ or Quadzilla XZT style that doesn't do anything to the programming of the ecm or I could get a Superchips or Hypertech that only changes the programing of the ecm. The main thing I don't like about the Superchips style is that you can't change tune while driving, but I do like that I can put a boost fooler on it and get a little more power. Which style does anyone recommend? Pros-cons. Thanks

No real difference in the end I like edge products Xzt has tunes which is nice That's about it

I have the XZT+. I am happy with it. I've never tried any other. The max power is +65 hp. No matter what you do, you can't exceed stock fueling because you have not tapped the IP wire nor is there and provision to do so. You can download various +65 tunes which offer different features & more aggressive fueling, even a non-published "3000 tune" which several people have circulating as a download. The lowest setting is stock. The middle setting is +35 which is a nice everyday tune and gives the best fuel economy (+1 for me, I was already into feather touch driving... except when merging, where I believe in getting up to speed quickly and getting the truck to shift up.)I like the shift on the fly capability... escpecially when towing, you can hit a hilly section & flick the dash switch up... on level ground it might not been needed, back to +35. I have the switch in my knee panel. I run this in conjunction with my MPG/IAT fooler switch... useful in colder weather. A simple jumper harness couples to a fixed resistor to "fool" the sensors that the truck is warmed up & switches to lean burn mode, saving another +1 mpg. I like to start with this off, so my grid heaters will run... switch off after starting. I have this switch in my knee panel also.

Smarty is another option, and when UDC is released for the VP's is will be really nice. I don't know about 2nd gens, but on 3rd gen's Edge has a reputation of running hot, and superchips/hypertech are cheap. Adjusting on the fly is overrated. Set the tuner for the max power you want/need/can handle and drive with your right foot.

I had an xzt+ and it was a nice little kick in power but it doesnt compare the the edge comp. The comp is adjustable on the fly and has built in boost fooling so you wont need your fooler.

Just remember anything that does NOT tap the VP44 is limited to 60-65 HP...Any that does tap the VP44 can now rise about the 60-65 HP lmit to 120-180 HP. You'll also find that boxes that tap the VP44 have a wider range of timing, fueling, etc.

10-4. So save up and get a edge comp or comparable. So in the meantime would it be worth it to get a boost fooler and put in my bd boost elbow? How much would that gain? I have a buddy I can get a boost fooler from for about $40.

Try a used smarty and bigger injectors. If you want to go bigger - then tap the pump

Boost fooler and boost elbow will gain nothing because the fuel Map only goes to 20 PSI basically so even though you extend the boost pressure there is still stock fuel rates. So power level will be the same. Your going to need to add fuel one way or another to gain power.

I've got the same type truck and the BHAF and 4". I had the XZT then decided to go with the Juice with Attitude. I bought an older version one off CF and picked it mainly for the gauges, although the 120Hp extra was a twist of my arm too :drool:. I love the programmer, usually run it on mileage setting and even that setting makes it scat. Never regret putting it on. Hunt around on CF and you'll find a used one no problem. My next addition is going to be RV275's. One last thing, my stock clutch is handling it just fine, but I use common sense. I never nailed it for dead stop and usually wait until im rolling along decent before I play. Adjustable on the fly is nice :thumbup2:

I understand I won't gain much without any fueling mods but I figured with the boost fooler I would avoid my truck defueling at 21psi. It is quite noticeable when it defuels around 2500rpm. Even if I keep stock fuel levels throughout the powerband I will be happy. Maybe next I will keep my eyes open for some used 50-100hp injectors then get the edge comp when I have an extra $500 laying around. I have a 3 week old baby at home so spending $50-150 at a time is much easier to pass by the boss rather than a $500 hit.

I don't have one for sale but a used Quadzilla XZT would be a nice starter for your truck. It just plugs in electrically. I know it is limited but the limits are what makes it safe for stock automatic transmissions (though I swear it shifts firmer with the XZT). The whole 24 valve / VP44 set up was an attempt to smog the Cummins 5.9. Power wise it was (like most smog programs) a step down in power capability... especially compared to the mechanical P2100 of the 12 v. Essencially, the XZT is a fooler... alters the data to give more power... and economy... All Chips / Programers / etc which don't tap the wire to the VP44 have the same 65-70 hp limit. XZT+ can be bought NEW for $269.

Whatever you do I would not buy a Quadzilla Adreniline I bought mine in february and I have already had four warranty claims and its still not right, I'm in the process of trying to get them to buy this piece back so I can get an Edge comp. I thought it would be a way to save money since it has a monitor so I wouldn't have to buy gauges but I have had so much trouble with mine I don't even trust the readings.

One of the few reason I will not buy a Edge Juice or Quadzilla Adrenaline because when the unit dies it takes everything with gauges and all now left blind for critical engine info. I rather always suggest gauges and separate module. :wink:

I second that!!

im kind of parial to the smarty nothing against any of the others i know of someone who uses an edge (not even sure what model) and likes it. For me the smarty makes good clean power you can tweak the tunes yourself or just run them the way theyre set up in the program. plus you have the ability to correct your speedo if your running aftermarket tires and read/clear dtc's. Doesnt have the ability to adjust on the fly like others do but i think thats a little over played by the other brands ive never really had the need to change settings like that i set it up the way i want it and run it if you feel the need to change tunes its only a matter of shutting down for 2 or 3 minutes tops so for me thats not a big deal.

The only time the adjust on the fly is really needed for me is heading up canyon in the dead of winter. I might start with clear roads and leave the Edge cranked up. Then when I get to the snow line I can adjust the power to keep grip. There is another problem with any flash type modules. After many, many flashes adjusting up and down constantly it will wear out the EPROM module in the ECM. I'm not sure of the count but its rather high. Where wired module doesn't have this issue.
