Well I've made it home for the summer and it's time to start tearing this thing apart. I will begin tomorrow, but yesterday I took it to the dyno. Laid down 503 / 1215. I was very pleased with the numbers, but the knocking is getting worse to it's time to take it apart.

  • IT RUNS!!!!! Video coming later. Barely any smoke, surprisingly.   This thing runs soooooo smooth. I only ran it for five minutes (Per Hamilton instructions.) But it's nice to know it's running and

I'll do get a couple!

I've got a 5" straight pipe right here in New Meadows. It's so darn loud of a drone at 60-70 MPH you can't even talk in the cab. You need ear plugs. Seriously.

Twins.... Unless you've heard them you wouldn't believe me when I say it's quite than having a muffler.

I've read that some people think that the 5in is less 'drone-y' then a 4in. I really think that it's a truck by truck case on whether it'll drone or not.

What at brand exhaust is it Mike?

I had both 4" and 5" with mufflers. 5" is louder! I had to add a resonator, but the 5" sounds better.

Which 5" resonator ....... and how much difference did it make :)

Yeah I have 5" stack right behind cab.

Its loud ........ but not as bad as others I've seen.

Just turn the music up or step on the accelator to get the twins spooling.

I do have a vibration though ....... could be my drive shaft though it looks pretty good ........

really think its my 5" piping .......at certain speeds

I've read a ton of good things about the FTE resonators. They seem help a ton with drone and don't effect sound to much. Dauntless over on CF did an amazing write up of his drone woas that was finally solved by a 17in FTE resonator placed right after the doe pipe. Definitely worth the read.

Down shift.. if the vibration persists it's tires or in the drivetrain. If it goes away it could be your exhaust like you said.

I'm not worried about mine being too loud. It's going to dump out in the stock location, so it shouldn't be too bad. If it is, I'll likely pick up an FTE resonator. I'm more excited about the turbo housing though! I'm really hoping it'll open it up and let it breathe.

New exhaust and exhaust housing should be here tomorrow.

Made a tester, and did a boost leak test. Happy to say everything is TIGHT! Only place air was coming out was the boost elbow :thumbup2:

Then did some more looking around and found this. 12K miles  This was a Napa, so hopefully the next one will last longer.

What's the leak?

Water pump. It's coming out of the weep hole, meaning the pump is shot

That's the "feature" they add on to ensure you change your coolant each year.   Nice of them.

I guess this is the "early" change version! I think I put it in either at the end of July or beginning of August

only in coolant and gas running back and forth to the store.

I think I have gone through 3 water pumps so far.

What brand?

The pricey orielly brand.  Lifetime warranty, which really means a lifetime of replacing it.

I've been away all week working on the truck.

So I started out by dropping in the 5in exhaust. All went in fine there, or so I thought.

I then swapped the 14cm housing onto the turbo that Jacob from DAP sent me.

I drove it around a bit that night and could not get it to spool. It would take 2200 rpm + just to get 5 pounds of boost out of it. Driving easy up to 65mph the egts would hit 1250deg. My overall boost had dropped off the 48psi (tuner maxed), with 30 coming from the primary. I also had the wastegate completely closed off.

So that night I pulled the compressor housing on the secondary and removed the cartridge after that. The turbo looked good, and so did the housing. So I took the back plate off of the wastegate to make sure there wasn't anything wrong with the "flappers." All looked good, so I buttoned it up and took it for a drive. Nothing had changed. The down pipe was also hitting part of the cab and making everything in the cab vibrate.

Friday I had a dyno scheduled, so I didn't have time to change the housings back. It lit about 2500-2800 rpm and made 450hp with 650ft-lbs.

I started that night by pulling the exhaust back apart and knocking a few dents in the pipe. I also cut off a screw that was hitting. Now it no longer touches. I also swapped the housings back over. I noticed the part where the turbine goes in is significantly larger, so it's not for the 65mm wheel.  I got it on the dyno again on Saturday and it made 518. I'm not impressed, and I'm not happy with the numbers. I haven't decided what to do with it yet. Either I'll de-tune it with some smaller injectors and lighter tuning, or I'll start looking for Ppump parts. Decisions Decisions......

Huh.

I am kinda bummed as well... I'm not sure what's missing there.  I wonder what it would have done with the 12.

How's the butt dyno feel?
