Well I've made it home for the summer and it's time to start tearing this thing apart. I will begin tomorrow, but yesterday I took it to the dyno. Laid down 503 / 1215. I was very pleased with the numbers, but the knocking is getting worse to it's time to take it apart.

Mikey, just swap in a 5600, they dont even make them any more what could be the problem; I have a spare missing 4th gear you can use for a core. Shoot core charge on a 5600 is only $1000.

Got some news today. Looks like the Tcase is brand new. 100% rebuilt with OEM parts and 0 miles. I may be getting a heck of a deal here!

Well, you see... AH64 is on a business trip, and we didn't think he would mind...

Thanks. I knew it was coming, it's just a bad time for it to happen.

I've got a lead on one that came out of an 05 with 90K on it. It would come with the trans and an np271 transfer case. I'll talk to the guy more tomorrow about pricing.

^^^^ From a friend who owns a diesel performance shop. I can trust him because it came out of his truck!

He pulled it to suff in a 4r100 out of a ford. He's got a motor sitting on the floor that'll hold 1600, but he's trying to get 1200 on fuel only. He's got a SWEET set of twins on the motor that's currently in the truck... 68 over a 108. Ball bearing water cooled turbos. He said they were 10K with the manifold and external wastegates

Got some pricing this morning... 2700 for the transmission and transfer case. He's going to throw in everything needed for a manual swap as well, so I'll be able to sell that stuff. My clutch is already sold for $1000 with the hydraulics, and I should be able to get a decent price for the np241 in the denver area. If I can get the transmission sold as a core that would be awesome too. The clutch is going to be right around 1500 for everything. I'll then have to get both driveshafts rebuilt, so I'm expecting the whole swap to cost me around 4500 or so. It's a hefty price, but you can't put a price on reliability.

@AH64ID could you fill me in on fluid choices for this G56? I'm not going to put ATF back in it because that's not what Mercedes recommends. I keep seeing people talking about 4 quarts of mobil delvac 50 weight mixed with 3 quarts of amsoil syncromesh 5w30. Do you have any thoughts on that combo? Oil is definitely not my thing.

I do plan on running full synthetic atf4+ in the transfer case.

I have done a little oil research but not a lot on the G56.

I know that Amsoil Syncromesh has come up often; however, when you do the cross from the Mercedes spec to Amsoil the Syncromesh is not the fluid that comes up and the 75w-90 MTG. It's not a direct cross but both the Mobiltrans SHC-DC and the MTG have similar ratings.

Syncromesh and MTG are for different applications, i.e. NV5600 and NV4500. Generally speaking they are not compatible with the opposite transmission, but that's only a generalization.

My dad is running Royal Purple Syncromax, which is their recommendation for Manual Transmission that call for ATF from the OEM. This is also what works in the NV5600, and could be why so many run syncromesh in their G56... which makes more decisions tough.

The MTG, Delvac 50, and Mobiltrans SHC-DC are all GL-4 oils and the Syncromesh is not. That doesn't preclude the Syncromesh it just adds a point to the MTG.

So there you go. That's what I know but to be honest I am not sure what I would run in mine. The MTG is likely what I would run, but it's hard to say.

The other part has to do with the GL-5 is not compatible with the syncros from what I've read and like for NV4500 that fluid was design to over come the hard shifting in cold weather operation. I can't speak for the other tranmissions but I do some research on what I'm running...

Thank you! Always good to hear from someone experienced. I will keep researching.

As always, thank you for your input, @Mopar1973Man. I may drop some links to what I am finding in here to get your opinions. Either way I believe Dodge was being cheap dropping ATF in a manual transmission, especially when Mercedes does not recommend it. From the looks of it people are losing syncros and many believe the ATF has something to do with it.

Got some information on the clutch. It'll be 1475 with the hydraulics. I plan to head home this Friday and stick the trans in so that I can start measuring driveshaft lengths and get them built while I'm still in Denver. If I have time I'll cut apart and rebuild the crosmember while I'm at it. From the research I've done it needs to drop 1" and mount 2" back. Should be easy enough with some angle iron and 3/16 plate.

@TFaoro Just to let you know I'm NOT going to rebuild my transmission the tools required to rebuild and the rebuild kit it will cost more that buying a re-manufactured transmission.

At least you gave it a good shot. Out of curiosity, which tools are you missing?

I know I have the 5th gear nut tool, and probably some others for it. I believe the only one I'm missing is the bearing puller (I just cut my bearing off, then threw the new one in the oven to get it back on)

One just needs to be creative, I have basic tools up to 3" but like I posted before not really anything special needed to do one. Long punch and hammer and maybe a clam type puller is all that's needed and you can get those for 20 bucks or less.

A large vise works in place of a press and it doesn't take a fancy press by any means if one uses one in place of a vice.

With a cheap old AC welder over the years and some junk iron one can build home made sockets in less than a half an hour, have many of them for my tool collection over the years on the road and not having access to any "special' tools.

This is dumb iron, no preloads or back lashes to set. if you can figure out VP44's this is kindergarten stuff in comparison.

Heck just one socket is nearly hundred dollars... :broke:

This list makes me laugh... Literally all I used was the 5th gear socket, the T27, and basic tools. If you want to get the bearings off the easy way a puller would help (I would get one if I really wanted to build the transmission better, but I knew it was bound to explode)

Still, I understand where you're coming from.

I've basic tools up to 2". But I don't have the punch. I don't have the bearing puller. I Don't have the big of a vise nor a press. It might be kindergarten stuff to you being you got the tools. I don't have the tools period. I got junk metal but welder is junk too. Again I've never done this before nor do I have any experience with gears either differential or transmission period.  Now if you came over and showed me how to do then I'd be more willing jump out there. Gambling larger sums of money I really don't have on tools and rebuild kind of frightening.

The whole problem I got is not knowing :wtf:I'm doing. I have no idea what a functional transmission looks like or how to even disassemble it. That was the only manual I found that gave me a clue what to do. Again there is little ot ZERO information on how to fix these transmissions. What spooks me more is if I rebuild it I will not travel this summer with the RV. I wouldn't trust my rebuild being I've never done it. Place I plan on going would surely piss me off to have to hitchhike to get to cell service and then pay two bit shop to fix my failed rebuild. Which will cost even more...

Rebuild yours.

That directed at me or Mike? I've considered rebuilding mine and selling it....

Just mean that's a way to learn and also earn $$ to make it cost effective for future.
