VP44 Poll
I got 2 big arse truck batteries, they are either 1300 or 1500 CCA Each, I forget, but I think the OE was 1100 CCA each.

I put the PF7977 side by side with the Cummins/FG FS-1268 filter, the Balwin has alot more pleats per inch, so I guess better flow and more surface area to collect debris. Thanks for the recommendation AH64ID

VP44 Poll
I only get 1 PSI drop, while the grids cycle, but I am noticing the southern trucks have much better luck with the OE lift pump.

Safe fuel pressure
That makes more sense, because it is not accelerating down the mountain. I guess I wont worry about it, will see what a 1/2' supply line does for it?

I know, a grump in another forum pointed out the 5 PSI claim, and I pointed them to the page that Chip sells the DDRP on. I got no reply Disclaimer, "I wont mention other forums by name any more."

Safe fuel pressure
Glad you brought that up, today I took big blue through a mountainous region of Haines Falls Rt. 23A http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Route_23A_%28New_York%29 It is steep and winding, any ways big blue pulled most of it in 5th gear, had to down shift to 4th for sharp turns. On my way back down the Mountain, my fuel gauge was reading 12 psi in 4th gear, 2500 RPM, foot off the accelerator. I was wondering, why does it seem to be using fuel when I am coasting? I put it in N, and it coasted at 15 PSI. So go figure, it uses fuel in coast??

Safe fuel pressure
I am not going to debate Chip, he is an upstanding business man, he is a VP44 pioneer, and your not gonna make him change his pages, he told me so . A lot of other people that sell pumps, have even copied alot of his info and experience from his web site. So lets get back to fuel pressure. Today the temps were in the high 30s. I was getting 16PSI at idle and 13PSI WOT:thumb1:I just got the 1/2" hoses, and plan on putting them on tomorrow. I hope to see even higher numbers, and I wont be depending on that tiny hole for return

New VP44, the results are in!
Chip seems to have a good rep on the WWW, and in my book as well. What can I say, he is stubborn, and says that test is what it is. 1999, no lift pump was putting out 10 PSI, WOT at the time. I guess his page is sort of like a rambling, instead of all information.

WOO HOO!! I got a warranty Replacement!! :thumb1: Here is Chips email about the warranty and fuel pressures, they seem to go with the general concensus at this forum. Quote: Hello Bob, I feel your frustration daily. I don't understand why Bosch can't build better computers. I suspect the real issue is the lead free solder that the tree huggers have caused all of us to use these days. It seems to me that computers on VP44s fail early on if they are going to fail, so consider the glass as being half full in your case. You got the replacement under warranty! As for optimum fuel pressure, back then there was no lift pump available that could make 10 psi under load, so that is one of the reasons we decided to do our test. My opinion based on experience is that 10-15 psi is optimum at all tiimes. Yes we got the pumps. Have a great day, Chip Fisher End of quote. There you go, Chip does not endorse 5 PSI.

You would have to ask quickserve.

Safe fuel pressure
Chip emailed me back after he viewed this thread. I will only list the facts, if you want to email Chip, you should, because I will not share the entire email with you and his feelings. "there is a .016 bypass hole in the regulator valve to guarantee return fuel and therefore cooling. This is why the pressure drops after you shut off the engine." on the 5PSI dyno test "that was then and now is now. " I have been telling you all along, he does not recommend this, on the same page he is selling a Fass pump.

I got the 7977, and they are the yellow paper looking filter? I did not bother to compared, but I think the pleats were deeper. I am waiting till the 1/2" hoses arrive, then I will change the filter, I am getting sick of smelly like a diesel pump on a daily basis, but still better then gasoline.

My Cummins built 50 miles from home in Mt. Vernon? I kind of doubt that? LOLIt could just be a US plant that was shut down when they went to Mexico, I could not bring up the name in a search either, I guess I could ask Cummins?

IR thermometer fun
I have a Raytec as well, and it will read negative temps, bought like 10 years ago when they first came out, so don't ask the model, I forgot and don't care. Shop is 300 feet away, and I am not running down to check.

VP44 Poll
My volts are at 11.7 at first start, and quickly go to 14 within 15 seconds. I was concerned about voltage drop in the electronics, more then the pump. Not worried about the VP44 over heating when 1st started. I guess we need to give the poll a week, to get enough responses. Only 5 Southern votes so far.

My serial number is 4598859. Is it in the serial number or in the casting of the engine?

I will buy whatever they are selling, as long as they include a hooters girl with each purchase.

Fuel Pressure Gauge Recommendation
I wish I could make my Isspro mechanical gauge have the green glow that the Freightliner has when it is illuminated at night. I might just replace it with a pod of electric gauges, for fuel pressure, boost and pyro. But I have to make some green backs first. I will ask the vendors for a bid when I decide.

I emailed Baldwin for a comparison to the 7777 and the 7977 and here is the results. So which one looks the best for fuel flow?

What about the grid heater robbing voltage from the electronics and the lift pump?

VP44 Poll
I put a poll in CF, so I could get maximum response about our VP44s. Any ways a subscriber from Texas made this claim: "Hey give it a try. I am going to keep using the stock pumps though. They have worked for me so far! I have changed it out like 4 times now. But I just changed it when they quit filling the filter housing up during fuel filter changes. I need to get a gauge though." So go to the poll and see if cold weather has any correlation because of poor fuel delivery, and the condensation that goes with it. http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/98-5-02-powertrain/239995-vp44-failures-north-vs-south.html

Fun at the CF
They are split 50 50 on the topic any ways, it is kind of funny how they defend the 5PSI like it is gospel. But even Blue Chip dispels that myth himself by recommending 15 PSI, for computer cooling.
