  1. have you looked into waste oil heaters, them put out excellent heat, they are a little pricey though, and you need a supply to keep it fed, We use one where I work to heat a 50 X 150 with about a 16' at the peak cieliing. It can go through hundreds of gallons a month, but we keep it toasty in their 24/7. and of course we have the cieling hung propane furnaces for back up, and Ive seen them gas bills well over 500 bucks a month, when we run out of oil to burn. for your shop size I think it would be more efficient, and also a good coal fired stove might work too
  2. Mike your garage looks a lot like mine *worked in* I used to have a wood burner, but with one going full time in the house I didnt want to feed another one, so to save room I just ran a gas line to the shop and installed a propane heater, it heats it up at the spur of the moment with just a flick of a button
  3. Ya, I been driving big rigs over wolfcreek and red mountain as well as several others for the last 20 years with OS loads over 120k. And I learned early on that when those temps start climbing I back off to about 1/2 acceleration and drop gears as necessary. As far as mine my fifth wheel weighs about 9000 plus loaded and sometimes Ihave a small boat or atv s behind that to add another 2000. About 35 to 40 is common for on the longer hills and of course o/d off
  4. No I don't have a pyro gauge. It's on the near future list. Thinking of doing a 3 gauge pod on the pillar, maybe pyro. Trans and boost. So basically it's just guess work and experience doing what I can to lower my temps
  5. Your right I really didn't explain that too well. The temp will go a little to the right of the last white tick mark on steep grades with a GVW of about 18k. Still if that's operating range it seems way too hot for me. I'm hopeing the new rad. Helps on this issue. Ths outside of radiator had some gunk in spots that you really can't see or clean without pulling it or the shroud
  6. Mishimoto makes an all Aluminum cap and core, and I'm sure their is others too, but its not like I enter my truck in truck pulls, or pull 6 to 9% grades continuously, so The oem should do. I have never been happy with the way my trucks temp is on a grade thats 6% or more and more than 6 or 7 miles long., it goes up to almost the red line about 210 0r 220, then I start sweating too. All I can do is drop the trans down a gear or two and back off the accelerator a little
  7. thanks dripley, thats what I was wondering about, I will probably purchase the one from oriely since its the only one available with out ordering today. I was just curious about the quality, I was looking into an all alluminum but for $600.00 I will just stay with OEM and hope for the best I think the one from oriely is made by Murray and is a three row, what ever that is worth, I don't know. So hopefully its a drop in and go
  8. with 270k on it I would rather start with a new radiator, at least I know it will be clean.
  9. well, everytime I start talking good about my truck, she let me down again. Started smelling antifreeze, and saw a drip underneath drivers side, thought the petcock might be leaking but further looking I found a pin hole, but anyway, Does any one have any recommendations on a replacement, the only one available around here is ORielys for about 230. bucks, Just don't want to short myself on a cheap radiator since I do some towing and all,
  10. I bought my 2nd. gen in 2003. it had 20k on the odometer, now it has 270k, been a great truck and I haven't had a truck payment since 2008, aside from repairs every now and then, and stuff I want to add, I'm glad I went the rout to keep it and maintain it. with 270 k, I might beet mike back from the moon, but I don't think ill catch up to the chicken man, Ha!
  11. Yes I like to error on the side of caution we never can be to sure what's comming out of the pumps. Even if the refineries have the proper specs you don't know what's in them underground tanks at the filling station. I'm sure you can't filter out water. So far I just used some 911 and haven't had any issues, but it hasn't dipped below 0 either I agree on becoming dependent on plugging in. It reminds me of some old road equipment we had an old case dozer and called it an either baby becouse it got started all winter on either and come summer time it still had to have its morning fix of either
  12. That's a clean looking unit. That camper remindes me of simpler times
  13. It gets plugged in every morning about 1.5 to 2 hr. It's usually plenty for an easy start. I will have to look into those I like the idea of 12v. I take it that you can turn them off and on when needed
  14. pressure sensors are aft. filter, so ya I will be replacing filter but it s going to have to wait till I can get to town and get one. I got some 911 in a red bottle in the garage, I m going out right now to pour some in and run it a while to let it mix, I got to take off again in the morn, and hopefully I have better luck. I also put some cardboard in front of the radiator, maybe that will help get it up to temp.
  15. So latley when the temps get below 5 to -5 below, my fuel pressure is showing about 2 to sometimes 4 psi greater. It normally idles at 18 psi. now its at 20 when I first start it up and has went to 22 once. This morning I left in hurry at 6 a.m, temp at negative 6. I only let truck warm up for 10 minutes or so. temp not even registering on gauge yet. I figured Id just take it easy going down road till it started climbing. I got about 4 miles and temp was lucky to see 160 and fuel pressure was showing 22 psi. then it started dropping all the way below 10 psi. so I stopped to try to build more heat.
  16. Go on line and check out mill supply discount plow parts. They carry just about everything for all the major brand pick up plows. I run a western on a k/5 blazer and use them if I'm in need of parts
  17. It sounds like you could have grid heater problems, like if it's even comming on at all. Do you notice a big drop in volts on your gauge with key on before starting.
  18. It's eggs every morning and meet and potato every night. During the day I drink lots of water and snack on peanuts while I'm driving ( it keeps me filled up and resists the urge to get convience store food) I have been driving truck for 25 years, started with dump trucks and concrete, and have been operating lowboy for the last 10. I m 5'10 and have maintained 190 for the last 10 years or so ( I was a skinny SOB before I met my wife. Funny how that works) but I get a good work out loading equipment and dragging chains and boomers around sometimes a few times a day. I work by myself and refuse to have a swamper, just because I know I need the exercise. But no matter what you do I think the key is just to stay active and mobile. And I try to do stretches every morning and that helps tremendously, especially when you spend a lot of time driving.
  19. So Mike, what did you do that you are lucky to have dashes in great shape, Do you live in a controlled environment or something
  20. this is what it looked like in the Dolores area this morning @ 7380 ft. elevation. about 14" in the last 24 hrs. not a big snowstorm by any means just a storm. When the clouds burn off we will be well below zero overnight, I didn't bother cleaning the dodge, just jumped in the old plow truck and went to work this morning
  21. congrats to your friend on his kill. I got a lot of respect for them cats. they are some awesome critters., those dogs deserve a lot of credit too.
  22. Yep, those are some nice size cats, I too am tying to reduce the coyote population. We have some big cats around here in Dolores, Co.. There was on killed a few years ago about a mile from my place. It weighed in at a litttle over 200 lbs. just shy of the state record
  23. I would also try different measures before drilling and installing hell coils, I tried that on an old 6.5 chevy diesel, wish I hadn't, Those starters are under a lot of torque, and not enough bite on those heli coils, trying to re tap the original threads would be the first option
