Not running well and don't know whats wrong
Welcome to the best Dodge Diesel site that I have found. There are a lot of people on here with great information and they are very helpful. Any question I have had other members here have been great with help, insight and suggestions.CR means common rail, which is they type of injector pump you have. I have a VP44 injector pump, which is different than yours and different from a P7100. I do believe that you have electronic injectors.Lift pump had me confused for a long time also, until I found out that it is the fuel pump. Why call it a lift pump and not a fuel pump, I am not sure? I guess because it lifts fuel to the injection pump instead of pumping fuel to the injection pump. Hope that this helps, I do not have a common rail, but if it happened shortly after changing the fuel filter that might be a place to start.

A little package came...
I will be interested also as I just got some 75hp injectors also and now am looking for a place to pop test them. It will be next month before I will have the funds to have them installed. I am looking forward to getting them installed, so it will be great to hear how they work in your truck so I know what to expect.

Low power CTD issue - KyCTD
I know we do not have cat's in our trucks, but I have a 97 Jimmy that had a plugged cat and it was about like he described. I am wondering if something could be plugging the exhast and when he got on it it popped it loose then when he changed the engine he somehow dislodged it only to have it block the exhast again? I have always heard start with the cheap and easy first, it is probably something more involved, but it would not hurt looking into airflow first.

Fuel prices going up again
One more reason I like my job. We may have to drive Fords with V-10's out here on the ranch, but I do not have to pay to fill them up. I may get to town once a week cause it is 70 miles one way and we do have some long work days, but I only need to get fuel about once a month so I am not sure what the price is in Twin? I guess that if it gets too high I can always ride my horse and lead a pack horse???

What size injectors?
An after market fuel pump will be installed along with the injectors, so that will be taken care of as I know I will need a good supply of fuel to keep the vp44 happy. I am thinking that I should be able to get around 60 rwhp with my stock turbo and the boost fooler and boost elbow. I am not looking for huge gains, but I would like to see modest gains. I have loaded the truck down pretty good, at times over 20,000 lbs, so any gains that I can get would be helpful. I think along with the smarty I should have a pretty nice setup.

What size injectors?
I am looking at upgrading my 99. I have gauges(egt, fuel and boost), boost fooler and a boost elbow. I am thinking that one of the next things to install are injectors. I know everyone likes the RV275's, but looking around I am wondering if 75 hp injectors are also a good option. I do not tow heavy loads a lot, but there are times that I do load the truck down and would like to have some extra umph. I know that I will also need to upgrade my fuel pump as I still have a stock type in the tank, but for now I am just looking at different options. The truck has around 350,000 miles thus far and runs down the road without missing a tick. Thanks for any input.

Biofuels emit 400 percent more CO2 than regular fuels
I have run biodiesel in both a 93 and 99 CTD. The mileage did drop, but only by about 2 mpg and I did not notice a drop in hp, but then again I was running empty most of the time. As far as CO2 goes, if we did not produce CO2 then plants would not grow. It amazes me that people complain about the amount of CO2 produced, but every time you exhale you are exhaling CO2, so I guess that we should outlaw breathing? As far as electricity goes, I am thinking nuclear. Enviormentalist want clean energy, but don't want dams because of fish, wind mills are popular right now but how many birds have to die before they start dismantling them and solar works great when it is light but at night when you need to recharge all those electric cars they don't works so well. I do not know what the answer is, I just hope that people smarter than me are working on these problems. If it where up to me I would just have everyone go back to horse back, but I am sure that a whole lot of people would be against that as it is cruelty to animals or something.

Jonathan1950 updated bumper photos
This is a small improvement over the stock bumper, I am thinking that if I hit a deer out here at least my truck will not be hurt. It did lower the front end down a little, not sure if I want to get a leveling kit, readjust the headlights or just build a stout rear bumper to compensate? It still has a few minor things that needs to be done to it, not too bad for a home built bumper and at least it is on.

Slow AirBags leak....
The Frieghtliner we have here on the ranch will lose the air out of the air bags in a few days, but it has over a million miles and we do not treat it very well. I would get spray bottle like an old windex bottle and put soapy water in it. If there are any leaks in the air system, even a small one it should be noticeable with the soapy water, but I would not think that a newer system should be leaking air out of it.

national cell phone ban
No, really, tell us how you feel about a possible ban. Quite beating around the bush and just tell us. I have to agree with you, we have enough laws on the books for distracted drivers, we need to enforce the one that we have and not add new ones. I was driving into town today, not on my cell phone or texting and almost ran off the road, I guess if I had caused an accident under the new law I would not be held accountable even though I was distracted because a cell phone was not involved, but someone at a red light that gets rear-ended is at fault because he was on a cell phone??? Lets enforce the laws we have and not keep getting new ones, it is a tragedy that people die, but as long as there are vehicles on the roads people will die on them or because of them. If you want to stop cell phone use in vehicles then lets outlaw vehicles, but then when somebody trips and falls while walking and talking then I guess that we will have to outlaw walking. People will find ways around the law, just like people with new diesels have found ways to delete the emissions on them, even though that is illegal.

national cell phone ban
OK, if car manufactures make something that disables cell phones when the vehicle is in anything but park, what is my girlfriend going to do as we drive into town? She will not be able to talk on the cell since it is disabled. I believe that there are a lot of accidents due to cell phone use, but there are a lot of accidents due to other forms of distracted driving, should we also make those other forms illegal also? As you stated, eating my not distract the driver very much unless you spill something, which happens all too often, so since it is possible we should ban eating and driving? Don't get me wrong, something needs to be done, I am not smart enough to know what can be done, but my opposition is where does it stop. Today it is cell phones, what will be next? As an example, years ago people could smoke most anywhere. Then smoking in certain areas was banned, but that is as far as it would go, then somebody wanted to go just a little farther, next thing people can not even smoke in parks or in their vehicles. I like ISX's thing about smarter cars, but that will not help most people because it will only be on new vehicles and it will take years to implement. Hey, the horse is in the cross walk, riding horses for a living they are by far safer than a vehicle, I have been drunk and put my horse on auto pilot and he has gotten my home. Although the last time I was on a horse I did break my leg, but let me assure you he nor I was on a cell phone! In fact I wish I had cell phone service because then I would not have been left out over night with a broken femur. It has been just over three months as I hope to be back riding in a month or two, and I will try and not use any electronic device while riding.

national cell phone ban
I have to agree with MarbleCrusher, if you ban cell phones, are you going to ban eating food, drinking coffee or soda, looking at the radio or having children in the vehicle also? I would rather have less government intrusion than more. Some people say that if it will save one life than it will be worth banning cell phone, I have to ask if you are worried about saving lives than get rid of things that can kill you including vehicles. I have heard that you can not legislate stupid, the best you do is try and stay away from them. I, like MoparMan, live where there is no cell service, even though I am a flat lander, I still have to worry about some stupid things people do.

Pics of me towing things
So far I like how it pulls. I have not had any issues with clearance, the only thing that I would like is a little more power, but I am working on that. I have a Sooner goose neck stock trailer, the nose is rounded not squared and I have towed that quite a bit and it clears the cab just fine. Just took a John Deere 410 backhoe into town today and other than squatting the rear end a little there where no issues at all. I do not think that there would be any clearance issues with a squared nosed trailer as I have plenty of room between the front of the trailer and the cab, the only thing that there might be is a little less turning angle since the side of the trailer would come close to the cab before the doved trailer tongue would. Hope that this helps, Jonathan.

Yeah, I know how you mountain folk like to joke! We do have some hills out here, not as big as yours, but in the summer we move the cattle up on Elk Mountain. Sometimes I have to leave the girlfriend home because she gets too nervous we I do some of the things I do. Like you, they are safe as long as you use your head and plan it out.

Yeah, it is pretty flat around here, and not many police to worry about either. The load of tires came from Utah, there were only a few hills to go over. The pipe was just north of Twin Falls and the the Ford went to Twin Falls, so only a few small hills to climb. The Nissan came all the way from Portland OR with the diamond plate on top so that was a pretty fun adventure going through the Gorge with a large wing strapped to the car, but it made it.

Will the transfercase interchange?
I am not sure if it will switch right over. After swapping out my auto for a stick, I had to tear apart my transfer case to replace the input shaft. You will have to check the bolt pattern to see if it will bolt on, but you may also have to swap the input shaft if it is coming out of an auto and going into a manual or visa versa. I would think though that it will work as my manual trans came out of a 94 and into my 99.

NV4500 grinds going into second
This is why I am asking, so I do not have to be :banghead: a month after I get it back in. I would rather only have to pull the trans once than have to pull the trans twice, I do most of my own work, but it is still the time and effort to do it I might as well do it only once.

Jonathan1950's 99 CTD QCSB
A few pictures of my 99 CTD. I bought it with 316,XXX and it is still purring along. The heaviest load so far is about 26,000 pounds, it was a load of tire troughs on a goose neck flatbed trailer. The truck gets about 20 mpg empty, but only 10 mpg while hauling 26,000 pounds , not bad for a 99.

NV4500 grinds going into second
So I will need to tear apart my NV4500 and replace the syncros because it grinds when I shift into second gear. If I double clutch then I can shift with out grinding gears, but trying to down shift is difficult, so I am planning on tearing it down to replace the syncros, just wondering if I should have any other parts handy to replace since it is opened up? It seems to be fine otherwise, no whining, the gear shifter is tight and it does not seem to leak any fluids. I do not know if it has the fifth gear fix or not? Thanks for any insight.

Surging revisited
I too have a surging problem. Sometimes it is pretty bad, sometimes it is almost non-existent. I was talking to a friend of mine that has had several CTD's, and one of his had a similar problem. He said that he took it into the dealership as it was still under warranty and the dealership said it had something to do with the turbo. He was not sure exactly what it was since it was warranty work, but he thought it was something to do with the oil line or passages? I thought mine was due to the PCM as it seems to have happened shortly after I swapped out my auto for a manual trans, but after putting in a PCM and an ECM from a 99 manual truck it still does it. I will have to do some more research to try and find why it is doing it, it does it both with or with out the cruise control on. Hope this helps a little, maybe at least give you something else to look at???

What are my options...
I too recently had a work related injury. Long story short, I got into a fight with a big rock and rock my femur. Every one thinks that I lost but I am up and moving around and that rock has not moved since I kicked its @ss. Anyhow, my boss submitted a work comp claim and the insurance company has paid all my medical related bills. There has been no talk of a settlement, just submit my bills to the insurance and they pay them. I am not sure if I will receive a settlement or not, not really worried about it, it is more important to be able to get back on a horse and if there are complications down the road that I will still be covered for them. That might be what the insurance company is worried about, it is cheaper to pay a lot right now than have to worry about the cost down the road???

Retread Tires
Out here on the ranch that I work on we used to run retreads on the work trucks. One set I had on my truck lasted over two years, that is saying a lot. Probably 95 % of our miles are on gravel or dirt roads, a lot of times we have a goose neck stock trailer hooked up, or a load of block that weighs in at a ton. Once in a while we would have a cap come off, but that is rare. The only reason we no longer run retreads is that the tire shop was no longer able to get 16 inch tires. I would not see a problem with it, they look good at a good price. I might have to get a set when my tires need replacing. Good luck which ever way you go.

I disappeared for a few weeks for good reason....
I know how the broken femur is, I just broke my left femur also about two months ago. I live out side of town also, it is about 40 miles to the closest town of about 50 and there have been times that I can make the trip and not see another vehicle. Luckily my accident was not vehicle related, but as we where gathering cattle my horse stumbled and went down causing me to hit my leg on a big rock. I feel fortunate that even though I had to spend the night out there, I did lose against the rock as the rock has not moved since I kicked its butt! I only was in the hospital for a few days, a plate and some pins in the leg and three months off work and I should be as good as new. It is a ways to go for physical therapy though, as it is 70 miles to get to Twin Falls. I feel for you having to stay in a rehab place, so I hope that you can get out of there soon.

What chip to run
I think that is 1 million not 100k miles.
