Wastegate Questions; any old threads?
The chart timing things are based on a number of things INSIDE the ppump. You can mess with injectors and all of that but unless you tear the pump completely apart to change things out, it is still a 160 or 175 pump. The numbers are the same on that chart for either of those so it doesn't matter. That's also the only pump on 95' dodge trucks, unless it was out of something else.

That's quite a story. Where exactly did he get the engine? You say it's a 95 but did he get it out of a 95 dodge? If it is then you got the wrong CPL. Here is a chart, you need to be looking at the 160HP pump since you said it came with an automatic truck, if it came with the manual then it's the 175, though the timing chart is the same either way, but different than the 215hp numbers you been looking at. http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/FAQ/timing.htm The conversion isn't the issue because a 12V only needs power to the shutoff solenoid to run, there is no ECM running it or anything else. This means anything that happened in the condition of the 12V from donor truck to your truck is entirely the mechanics doings. There are no incompatible things or anything like that, only wrong timing numbers. I would like to see a picture of that return line setup though.

Oil pressure
Hmmmm, where is this valve at?
-
Oil pressure
I don't see how so many people see so much higher than that then. I have personally seen 95psi on the port over the oil filter. I have a video of it at 80psi.

Wastegate Questions; any old threads?
That's how it's supposed to be, he has something different going on. He has it in an F350 so it isn't a stock setup. The 12V does have a weird setup stock though. The overflow valve is on the ppump and it goes straight to the tank. However, the return lines on the injectors go back to the fuel filter, so they always have lift pump pressure on them. You can see it all here, skip to 2:15. http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1C8e5Q1l2E

Oil pressure
I'd like to hear more on this. I was under the impression that the only bypass was the oil filter one so even though it would likely bypass the oil filter when cold, it would still be at over 100psi throughout the rest of the engine. I would think the oil wouldn't flow through the engine if it was too thick to flow at 65psi and therefore your engine would be starved of oil until the friction of the oil that was in there warmed it up enough to flow at that pressure. But I admit I am not the lube system expert which is why I want to know more on this

What exactly is the history of this thing? You say it ran fine for 30k then you rebuilt it or something? What exactly did you do?
-
Oil pressure
That stock gauge is way off. On a cold 0-10F day, you don't see the stock gauge at 100psi, do you... I was seeing 90psi on a warmer day and that was even running amsoil synthetic, so conventional would be in the 100's when it was cold.

Wastegate Questions; any old threads?
Sounds like the overflow valve valve is ahead of the lift pump based on what you said. This means there is no pressure regulation. The overflow valve needs to have an unobstructed flow back to the tank, it can't be running back into an already pressurized line because it just forms a closed loop and the excess pressure has nowhere to go. Correct me if I am wrong here but I think that's how it is set up? I think raising it to where it is dancing more but has more pressure is only because you are seeing pump pulsation pressure. It is not true pressure. It really needs to be where that needle stops moving. My needle valve wouldn't go down any more in the video (I didn't really use a needle valve but something almost half as good..) so I couldn't make it perfect. Everything else sounds good or isn't far enough off to cause this issue.
-
Wastegate Questions; any old threads?
The needle valve serves as a baffle sorta by averaging the peaks of the pressure spikes and giving you a pressure. This means you would close the needle valve and open it only enough to get a reading, though on a 12V you can see the pressure pulses without damaging anything (at idle anyways) so you can keep opening the valve until you see the pressure spikes, then back down until it stops bouncing. The overflow valve goes back to the tank and after it gets past the engine it turns into a rubber line. When you are idling you can slightly clamp that rubber hose and see if the pressure goes up, if it does then the problem is the overflow, if it doesn't then the problem is the lift pump. Don't clamp that line shut or the lift pump will build pressure until something gives..you just want to restrict that line, not clamp it shut. Here are fuel pressure specs. If you were getting an accurate reading, the fuel pressure is a lot less than what it needs to be.

my bone head weekend
You don't know how hard I have been trying to find an excuse to pull the head... I don't want to buy a new head gasket though. If someone gave me one, the whole engine would be out of the truck and the head would be off and I would be stareing at it for hours

Eh, at least you had a reason. I did my antics just to get video of some things for more writeups, so I coulda destroyed everything just to get a writeup video haha. Oh and yes, I got the whole ordeal on video

Front Drive shaft Question on 4x4
I can't remember any tips, I've only done a couple and that was long ago.

my bone head weekend
I got you beat. Was playing with a barrel on the ppump and a shim fell out that I didn't see happen, tightened it up and wondered why it was trying to kill the truck. Then I notice it was putting the plunger in a bind since there was still a spacer on the other side. So I say holy crapppppppp the plunger/barrel is probably scraped up and I'm screwed. I then proceed to tear it all apart to visually check it and the first thing I do is pull the barrel right out and watch all the fuel drain out. I didn't even think much of it until later when I was wondering where all the fuel went. The barrel and plunger form a perfect seal, so taking the barrel out just lets all the fuel drain straight into the pump, straight into the engine oil.. The pump was fine though, thank god. I like learning things but it's hard to learn from lessons that might have costed thousands. Now I know though! That's right, just when you thought you had a bad weekend I can always top it

Front Drive shaft Question on 4x4
Brings new meaning to "slip fit" doesn't it Double cardan is just as fun, like a rubiks cube though.

Intake question, sucking air in somewhere?
Went and took the bolt out of mine and it's straight through, not part of the intake. Not the same as a 24V I suppose but the intakes end in the same spot

Yeah dig around on that thing and see what you can find. These are very simple engines once you play with them enough. These are all articles about stuff on the pump that might teach you some things.

Wastegate Questions; any old threads?
I recall pulling our trailer up some steep hills in the backwoods at 60 at 10psi and I would be around 1000F as well. I cleaned the turbo and set my valves really tight and then I could run high boost lower in the RPM so I could go up the same hill at 8-900F. The fact that you are floored with no black smoke though..if that AFC is out of the way which it should be, then it should be puking smoke. Definitely need to do some testing with that AFC/Fuel Plate/Overflow Valve setup. I kinda doubt the wastegate just because they usually get stuck closed since the amount of time they are open is maybe 1% of the time and the rest they got a lot of tension holding them shut. Timing could also be a factor but not where it has no fuel, it would smoke or something so I'm leaning away from that. Problem with all these issues is not knowing your truck so you just have to check everything yourself and narrow it down until we find something we can work with and pinpoint as being the problem.
-
Low end power
Yeah you could try cleaning the injectors. I clean them every 5000 miles maybe less. I can't resist cleaning them cause they look so perdy when I'm done I do the valves just as often. I don't exactly know what the timing was but you can see it starts like crap so I'm guessing over 20*. I had a guy do it who said he knew what he was doing but all he did was guess that it was at the stock 13* and he popped the gear off and turned the engine a little then put it back on. Hence the reason I really kicked it into gear to learn about these and I started tearing my truck apart daily. It would flat out NOT start under 20F without running the grids multiple times, even then my ford could top it.
-
Low end power
Advanced timing will make it smoke at idle because it is injecting the fuel before there is enough heat to burn it off as well as if it were more retarded. As RPM goes up and the pistons move faster, then the advanced timing helps to get all the fuel in before TDC. At idle it is getting the fuel all in a fair amount before TDC and causing a little bit of backlash even. It knocks more because of that. 24V's are VERY advanced in the winter or so Mike tells me, that is why they knock so loud. It could also just be a sign of high miles (not sure how many are on it). Timing really does play a big part in it though, mine smoked any time the engine wasn't up to temp. Here's mine at 56F in the morning when it was really advanced.

This is probably the best way to check for leaks, though a leak big enough for only 10psi would be pretty apparent if it wasn't a boot it would be a big crack somewhere. Diesels run extremely lean by design (with the turbo and all). They have no control of intake air so when the intake valves open it shoves in as much air as possible. High EGT's come from excessive fuel and not enough air which is a product of low boost and too much fuel going in (which ends up in unburnt fuel seen as smoke). The speed and RPM you were going determine the EGT the most with a truck running only 10psi. I can do 10psi at 1000RPM and see 1000F pulling a trailer up a hill, yet I will be at 500F pulling the same trailer at 60 at 10psi.. Timing being off can skew EGT's a lot as well. There's a lot of factors and the symptoms are not making it easy haha. If you can describe more of how you were driving in full detail when it was at 1000F that might help.
-
Intake question, sucking air in somewhere?
It would have to be the inside bolt that is closer to the valve cover since the outter one is threaded all the way through the intake manifold. http://i51.tinypic.com/2e2i5aq.jpg

And no boost leaks? If any of those clamps are loose it blows right out when it gets to a certain threshold. Anyhow it really reduces to a few things. The injection pump sounds like it's working but not giving it enough fuel, like the fuel plate is slid towards the cab a bunch. The AFC only controls it to 5psi and then moves out of the way, it COULD not be moving all the way out of the way though. You can take it off (the thing I showed on that diamondplate), and test it as shown in this video (linked writeup in next paragraph). Hook it up to a known pressure and see where it moves at and it should be under 5psi. Then you can look at the fuel plate and see where it is (slid all the way back or forward). If all that checks out, there are no boost leaks, wastegate is fine, then I would check fuel pressure. The pump doesn't really dictate pressure it is the overflow valve that does, which they go out every now and then regularly. Here is a writeup on that AFC and you can see that arm that pushes on the main fueling arm to control how the pump fuels to prevent black smoke. That arm should move over like in the vid with 5psi or less. The Fuel plate also shouldn't be all the way back as that will defuel it pretty good.

Wastegate Questions; any old threads?
Whoa, a mystery pump you say. Those pumps range from 160-215HP and if it was a marine setup then it's 370HP which I have no idea how those pumps are set up. Anyhow if you have no clue what it is then the timing could be way off. Does it smoke or anything? I am gonna assume it doesn't and the timing is fine but it is definitely something you should check out. The wastegate isn't an issue as long as you have a boost gauge so you can let off before it goes over 35 too much. Make sure it isn't stuck open like you were gonna do I don't think you could be hitting 1050 if that AFC was crapping out so I am gonna assume it works as well. There could be something wrong with fuel pressure which wouldn't really be seen down low since it doesn't need as much fuel going slower but up high I would think low pressure would show up much more distinctly as a loss in power/boost. Again does it smoke going up those hills at all?
