  1. I've had this pre-filter on for a 1/2 tank so far and would like to ask those who have them if they noticed a slight drop in mpg with it on.I go by hand calculation only, but since new, I noticed the lie-o-meter will be off by 2 mpg +, yet constant. Since this has been on, it's lower by 2 mpg than normal. Nothing has changed except the weather by being a few degrees lower, but nothing like your up north. Road conditions the same, fuel the same, driving like an egg is under my foot the same and loads then same. No changes except the outerwear pre-filter.Anyone else noticed this ?
  2. This thread started because he wanted to block off his CAI system because of the cold weather themps. I've been pondering this thread and on the news, they stated they were looking into salt reserves for the wintered roads in our state. They are generous with that liquid mixture to help prevent icy roads. Now the questions are;* how much sodium contamination / moisture can pass through the filter system to the turbo* and how much damage can it do ?Never thought about this before.Think I'll block off that big opening below my fender for the winter.
  3. Ya, I'm old school in knowledge of this. It was always the cooler the air, the dryer the air, good filtered air and plenty of it is the best. As for the EGT, the lower the temp, the less of restriction ... the best basic for your vehicle. Then, what can be done to extract the 'most' energy from every ounce of fuel. But, per this thread, I haven't lived in an extremely cold area in over 40+ years.
  4. This might be an idiot type of question, but this thread is of putting in a winter opening in the air box for warmer air during the cold, blocking off the CAI. With the industry demands for better mileage from engines, wouldn't they have engineer in a heating system of some sort for the air on the 'new' trucks if it would increase mpg, making them comply with the regulations set by the feds ? They said every mpg counts. I haven't seen anything for this on any new pickup truck or rig as of yet, or an aftermarket design, unless I missed it. (if there was a dollar profit in it, I would assume someone would have jump into it)
  5. No doubt it can happen. But I was leaning more into the mechanics of it. Like the changes between pulling from the storage tank, the size of the lines, the amount of suction of the pump, any minimum recirculation around the pump to maintain flow and volume, the elevation changes of the lines, kinks in the line external / internal and possibly the distance between the suction line from the tank and the return line distance positioning. We use to have issues with recirculating bypasses around a pump if the flow rate wasn't restricted to maintain it as a liquid. (these were fixed pumps and lines). If the return lines were to close to the suction inlet, this can affect the system. There are very few lines that are solid liquid, since there is most always a vapor space in the upper portion of the interior of the line. Not to mention, yes, there can be a difference in the liquid pressure of a hydrocarbon product due to elevation. I've never experianced this with my vehicle and it's a interesting topic. --- Update to the previous post... I'd like to ask those who experience this; a) is your fuel system stock or changed ? b) did you notice this before the changes or only after ? c) if after, after which change ? Might be a pattern here ?
  6. Weather is a bit bad and the DSL went out for a bit. Yes, the TSA is the 'FEDS', and they were allowed to inspect per the Nashville News stations by or governor, who is a republican. I can't believe he did it. The state is allowed to inspect, the counties can for under the influence and during that, whatever they can, and naturally the cities can when they want. Almost like living in California again. Only the taxes and vehicle fees are way less and the vehicle aren't trying to do triple digits going to Vegas.
  7. ****** I'm with you on your statements of looking into all the items including mechanical. But don't confuse diesel with gasoline. Summer time the max allowable tank pressure is different than winter, per regulations. In summer the gasoline blend is low on the high end vapors. If the pressure summer blend was the same as the winter blend, you'll have 'major' systems pressure issues. In winter the refiners are allowed to slip hydrocarbons in that will pressue the fuel higher, a major one is IC4, better known as IsoButane. Also, there are about 50 blends used throughout the USA, per federal and state laws / mandates. Diesel has very little changes in blends, summer verses winter. That's why only the diesel 1 and 2. Also vapor pressure per volume at rest for diesel is minimal compared to gasoline. A different animal.
  8. Not sure if it's the same for yours, but should be close. My 2006 manual says;Oil Pan bolts torque is (n-m 15) which is (130 inch lbs)Oil pick up tube bolt is (n-m 28) which is (250 inch lbs)Hope it helps.
  9. I've been on workmen comp once in my life, and was reading their paperwork. READ CAREFULLY and make sure you comprehend all that is there. They are a form of insurance company and they love to make it wordy when they can, (in their favor). Read, UNDERSTAND and Maintain copies ... before your sign.
  10. I will admit the fool we voted in as governor recently signed an agreement to allow TSA to do road inspections, (I was vocal about this in an email to him and when he did a visit to the local area, I believe they call this a TownHall Meeting). Yet I haven't found one TSA inspection point yet, except at the airports. I'm very much against it. Take a map and tell me I'm close to ANY continental border. All I wanted to know if they still do roadside vehicle inspections in your state. Sorry, didn't want to make a political battle out of this. Now 'THAT' would be a long, passionate and very hot thread, wouldn't it ?
  11. With all they can do medically, I personally feel they should make it right. The problem, industry only knows and goes by the almighty dollar. Insurance companies, Workman Comp and industry ... the bottom line ... the money. Does workmen comp / insurance company agree to $$$ plus medical cost for medical care ? Does it cover recoup time ? Does the doctors say it is repairable to normal or will there be a % of disability ? Are they saying a one time payout and they are free and clear ? Have you covered all options for YOURSELF ? I don't want to sound like the companies or insurance companies, but to get what you want, you'll have to. Venting is good, they pis*%d me off in the past and I understand what you are going through. But you sound like a caring family man and want to cover your dependents. When they want to settle fast, they must feel they have a weak case and want to get it out of the way fast. I wouldn't slide on seeing a good lawyer. They should see you're made physically right. ( I hate this, I'm sort of sounding like them).
  12. In the past, most states had 'Roadside Vehicle Inspections' where they set up a random check point and stop vehicle driving down a road for inspection of vehicles being in compliance of that state laws and such. [*]Also, they checked for different things like drinking, drugs and such, but keep it as a vehicle inspection for general public announcement. [*]Now in Tennessee, TSA can now stop you with an inspection, but I believe this is for big rigs. Since moving here, I have seen this done for vehicle inspection and insurance purposes, (they also inform residences prior of this inspection in the local newspaper). The state I moved from hasn't done this for years, but kept the option 'IF' it might be in their favor for something they want in the future. With so many traveling cross country / long distances, and this possibly happening, I would like to know if they still do this in your state. I never had an issue passing anything they checked for in my 45+ years of driving, but have wasted a lot of time waiting in line to be inspected. Thanks.
  13. When he gets old, will they look crushed or crumpled ?
  14. Thanks for the info. I've never had a paper filter in for more than max 3 years. Not that it really needed changing, just me not knowing if they would crumble or not. Was there any degrading of the material ?
  15. I definitely agree with the filter minder. Found one in a junk yard, made a wall bracket and fitted it in my wife little 03 gasser when I bought it new. Works great. I see they finally have satellite minders for sale. Should be standard in ALL vehicles sold in the USA.But as for the the savings on paper verses oilier ? Because I watch what the reminder tells me, I've only had to do her filter twice since 03 and I'm not even through with the first service kit. Maybe three to four more services with the kit before I need to get a new one. Savings ? Not sure, if any at all. I don't know how many paper I would have gone through. I have pulled the downside of her air cleaner to see if there was oil/debris in the tube or on the MAP sensor and found none. But like I said, I make sure of no over oiling. It still seems a personal preference or belief in my eyes on style of filter.I finally received my Outerwear pre-filter and fitted it on my filter, now the waiting game to see if I'll be happy or not. But loved the info by Outerwear, where they say it's good for 15k and is recommended to replace then. I guess they want a constant yearly customer.
  16. I've cleaned mine about the same way. I have noticed the tube from the air filter housing to the turbo was clean of oil. But I have taken off this tubing and have not seen oil or debris in or on the blades. I follow the instructions, but sparingly with the oil. There was two things I noticed with those who had oil in the turbo, they tend to over oil or not allow the filter to dry enough. Sounds like you let it dry enough, how about the amount of oil ? If there was any oil in my system, the filter system would be off and gone, that's why I still have them.
  17. As in my sig., I have the Banks with their reusable filter. I've heard pros and cons on them and the K&N style filters, but after 400k on another truck with no issues at all, I've my own opinion on them. Never had a pre-filter. I've had back and forth opinions on them. Wondered what others who actually have them, thought of them.
  18. Seems not many have used them, but I think I'll try one. I will say I've been hesitant on the advertisement claims I've heard about them. If nothing else, it'll keep the large debris where it's easier to remove. Thanks ...
  19. It doesn't keep enough larger trash out ? It's to much cleaning between changing out normal filters ?These are the things I'd like to know if possible.
  20. Thanks ..... but there are several sites that I have found, just wondering if anyone has had a positive experience with them. And it sounds like you have, so I'll consider that you recommend them.
  21. Sorry, but that video was crystal clear. I was in areas that you felt lucky you could see 200 feet ahead of you. (next time I'll have my video camera with me). There was the fire, farmers plowing and heavy winds. There was one stop we did for about 2 hours to see if the visibility would open, it didn't, so we spent the night at a motel.
  22. I have read and heard of people using pre-filters on their air cleaners. But have yet to fine anything in forums. I travel cross country each year and have been in very dirty environments. Like my trip last year. I drove through Texas, New Mexico and a part of Arizona ... when somewhere in Texas was on fire and the farmers were plowing for their planting. The debris in my air cleaner was black and mostly blocked it. I have a reusable filter and all I did was take the time to clean it and on the road again. If it was paper, I would be changing it out each time it was plugged, until I was out of the area. It was bad on I40 then.Has anyone used a pre-filter before ?If so, what was your conclusion of it's effectiveness ?
  23. Check with your state of automotive repairs. In some states, the company repairing the vehicle HAS to maintain the parts until you take them, you say to through them away or what ever you want them to do with the parts. If they are suppose to check with you and didn't, you have a complaint with the state. Either way, I would contact Dodge corporate and complain on this. Have the corporation tell you what the part is for and when it is recommended to change out.
  24. I lost ... I was betting on the 458, but 2nd place is better then 3rd.
  25. Per the older mechanic, he never seen this before. It was impossible to see from under the vehicle until he dropped it, angled it and put a bright light at an angle, then there was a small rusty sort of a shiny reflection. Now that the sh_t that was there is off, I can see the grease spot even when in the garage and without the flashlight.Use an extremely bright light when you look and angle it a little. The people here is right, it's there. But this was nothing like I've experience in the past.
