  1. I'd like to know if it's spring, the temp hit the low 60's today and the day was great. If this keeps up, I'll have to run the air conditioner soon.
  2. Ok, I'm a little confused. The start of this was getting better MPG with cooler or hotter fuel. But it still comes to mind that when the liquid is injected in the cylinders it is in a somewhat vaporous form. In a split instance it is compressed and ignited. If this hydrocarbon was say 50 degrees cooler or hotter, what would a few degrees matter ? It's there a split second and gone. What energy is there is now gone. Are we talking about all the satellite equipment and the need for cooling / heating to maintain a specific temperature range. Not allowing a vapor lock prohibiting flow or tearing the associated satellite equipment apart ? I'm still not grasping.
  3. If you turn your oil in for analysis each oil change to see if your good or not, why not go the distance ? I use to change the oil every 5k with filter and when I turn 30k I changed to syn., then changed the filter each 5k and cap off. The analysis said I was fine when I changed each 10k and could go further. I don't ... but why waste ? My oil has come out black since the beginning, and with good analysis reports I'm not worried about it.
  4. I'm new to the MAC world myself, but played with the other sites like foxfire, opera and about 10 others, and found out I like the MAC's Safari and yet had an issue with it. Since it was designed to be with his computer, have him download Safari and get it running. Then if he wants to toy with any of the others, he at least has one running properly. This should be the best way to get running with what is the basis of his system. He should be able to run the up to date version with ease.
  5. Actually your right, I didn't factor in the possible heat migration from the engine compartment to the inner fender well. But it seems if there is an increase it would be insignificant at most. This being the fact that with movement, the air should cool sightly. Though the sunlight shining on the fender will warm it some also. Once stopped, say at an intersection, it should increase quickly on a hot summer day with a hot engine. So even the original factory install is not even classed as a true CAI ... close but not a true CAI system.
  6. Ok, I'll accept it, I'm not on a track, haven't been on one in 35+ years, and now don't want to be.As in the beginning of the thread, wanting one or not, is this the correct understanding of a cold air intake system ?
  7. Not arguing your findings, it seems you have documented proof and is accepted. You don't need or want a CAI in your terrain. It benefits me in my environment. There are more terrains then the north 40.After reading many articles / threads on this, here and other sites, there seems to be a confusion on a true CAI, it's benefits and restrictions.
  8. I've read many threads about the Cold Air Intake system (CAI) on many website and there seems to be almost as many different understandings, beliefs or discriptions of the definition or understanding of this as there are members writing about it. Am I correct or not … Cold Air Intakes (CAI) draws air taken from a source of the locally ambient air of the region and stays taking air from this ambient source during the engine operations, and is constant to this local environment, which is non-changing except by atmospheric changes. If so, then inside the engine compartment, where the temperature is constantly changing as the engine builds heat while running and preforming it's function … is not the local ambient source of cooler air.If this thought is correct, then there are limited true CAI's on the market for our trucks. From what I have read and understand:a) the original vehicles air filter system which 'only' draws air from the fender well and not from the engine compartment is the first true CAI system.b) the next system developed (it looks like in marketing dates) would be the Banks designed system with the filter housing drawing intake air from the fender well and from below the front bumper and nothing from the engine compartment.c) the next system appears (it looks like in marketing dates) developed and put on the market would be the S&B system with the similar design as the Banks and nothing from the engine compartment.d) somewhere between the 'a' and this point will be the Home Depot style system, since I can not find the oldest time frame someone design / installed one with no air from inside the engine compartment.Anything else would seem to be considered an 'air intake system' or I guess would be labeled as (AIS). Taking the source of air from inside the engine compartment AND with outside the engine compartment air swirling in it's enviroment. Restrictions to these system would be:1) Blockage to the opening of the air box, like the opening to the fender well to the air box, and if an extension is added, to that.2) A dirty or restricted filter.3) Blockage to or in the tube from the air box to the closest intake portion of the engine, turbo, carburetor or injection intake, ect.If I'm even somewhat correct on this, it confuses me on the many argument / discussion to this topic in so many websites. If I'm not even somewhat correct in this, them I'm just as confused as the rest. I'm old, bare .. with me ... Your opinion / thoughts ?(I forgot to mention the Volant CAI system. It appears they do not sell many since most truck owners do not want to loose their passenger driving light with their fender intake tube).
  9. I actually call Cummins and ask about this. The guy said if you use Valvoline Blue Full Syn, you can extend your oil change intervals an extra 5k. They use it in the engines when they send them out from the factory. Don't really agree with that, but it's what was said.
  10. Have you also consider that during the winter months, fuel has lower energy per the same quantity then in it has in the summer months, and this can be a factor in initial heat gains from start up ?
  11. neoprene o-rings for diesel is fine. and for the hose from the dealer for the drain ? they are expensive and you'll end up above the axle where it's to short and drip on everything each time you use it. they have to order and it's one size only. go to any store that sells clear plastic tubing, i believe 1/2" ID and get the length you want. it's cheaper and quicker.
  12. Recently did research on this BHAF and from the internet suppliers, they say up to an '02. Might fit in something later, but with modified parts and fittings. Need to get measurements to see what's up.How many who owns a 2003 and later has one under their hood ? Seems everyones sig I seen here that has one in is an '02 or earlier.
  13. 1st thing I do with a new battery is charge it 24 hours before I attached it to the truck. I also drive it every weekend when it was my 3rd vehicle, but she's my main now. If it was accessible to an electrical plug, like I have now, I keep one of those battery tenders on it when I'm not using her for over a week. If no access to an electrical plug, might consider taking the batteries home and doing this when letting her sit for weeks on end. Sounded like the shop said there was no drain after a couple of minutes, if this is questionable, try another shop for a 2nd opinion. But using it often or keeping her charged is the best option in my opinion. Not allowing you to park a truck with a camper shell ? Sounds like California in the LA or Orange county area.
  14. I really don't worry of the 0* temps, but it always seemed to me this is why you use something like 5w-40 or 0w-40 oil for these kind of days. If you let the oil circulate for 60 sec or more in that extreme cold, then drive slow, your lubrication would minimize or sort of nulls the wear factor. ???
  15. And my everyone get that one special wish they want.Have a safe and very Merry Christmas.Ho Ho !
  16. Just got back from helping my brother. At the Love's there, the regular gas price is 2.959 and the diesel (cash) was 3.649.Yea MM, their putting the shaft to ya.
  17. Your wife must of been brought up in the same era and area as mine.Just remember: is she's right or left handed BEFORE she swings at ya, then duck properly.
  18. Dripley, in the cookeville area there are gas prices for reg @ 2.999 4 days ago when I visited my brother. Diesel has been way more stable in Tenn then other parts of the country. If ya look at prices nationwide, it's average is slightly lower. But up in MM's area, it looks like in the Frisco area in north cal. But it pi**es me off when it doesn't cost as much to make, and they ship out of the country almost as much as they sell here. I understand heating oil and jet is from the same cut of crude, but not this price we have to pay. Also, if your working in Tenn, while your here, look into that Kroger discount at Shell. Each time you buy from Krogers, using their savings card, you start adding point to save on fuel. Last time I used it I saved 55 cents per gallon on pump price. It sucks there is a 35 gallon limit, but then I go else where to save more cash. I'm not saying Krogers is that great, as long as I can eat and save on fuel and food, I'll go there.
  19. Would it be profitable to get a transfer tank of 200 or 250 gallons and holding some on the land for when needed ? Then refill when you travel to where it's cheap ? There's an old farmer with a 500 gallon tank that does it here. Actually saves him money each year.I'm sorry, no insult intended, but I'm glad I live here.
  20. WHAAAAAAA .... And I was complaining yesterday when I filed @ $3.49 a gallon. That isn't gouging ...... it's flat out robbery !
  21. Laws ? There are so many laws on each state books, there is no way to know even 2% of them. I was raised in Ill, and before I left there in '67, I read some of the laws that were still active on the books. One said at the age of 16, every male HAD to have a weapon with him when outside, (or something similar to that), this was to protect you from indian attacks. And the law that got Al Capon, the state stamp tax on the bottom of every tobacco container was still in effect. Heck, in 1967, they had the stamp tax sticker on the bottom of the pack and no one cared or much less knew of it, and I seem no one with a weapon going to town, in fact, I didn't see any indian attacks either. But still on the books and active. We have laws, plenty of them with no end in sight.
  22. I guess I'm very old fashion. When I took my first driving test, it stated: Driving on state and city highways is a privilege. You will abide by all of the Rules of The Road for the state and the states you are in. You will maintain your vehicle in a safe and proper condition. You will put the driving of your driving 'As Your Top Priority' while driving on the roads.Your driving a several thousand pound vehicle at varying speeds and in a split second, damage property or kill someone. So, you as an individual is so privileged that you are the only one out there and allowed to do anything you want at any time, no matter what ? Before I retired, I drove 100 miles each morning just to get to work. I have seen more idiots than I want. This is because, I believe, they know all and felt they can drive safe do any and all un-Godly things. But in all, I'm very surprised I didn't see more accidents and deaths than I did. I've seen enough I should have made notes and took pictures, then published a book, "Humans on the Road - Idiots At Large !'. (But then I would have been as much of an ___ as they were.)My last run home on my last day of work, a lady was ahead of me, on a cell phone, arms waving, appeared mad, (I slowed up) drifted off the road onto the gravel edge, jerked the wheel to get on the asphalt, slammed into a couple cars, killed a guy and two kids. In all, because of her, her need to be on the cell, uncontrolled temper ... the total time home was over 4 hours, and seeing the bodies removed, vehicles towed off and also an interview with the cop. Hell of a day.
  23. Don't know if this is close or will help, but Bosch has service centers in the US. Here's the site to see who is in your area. http://www.boschservice.com/FindSvcCenter/Pages/FindingaServiceCenter.aspx
  24. AH64ID - The Banks system has been on for I believe 4 years and the unit supplied everything from the turbo to the grille. And M1973M, I never owned a paper filter except the original on any vehicle I've own. And I will say they are WAY smaller compared to the one BHAF that I've seen. I will say I was hesitant on over 3 years on a paper filter even though the filter minder indicated it wasn't plugged. I guess I'm old fashion in my beliefs. I 'felt' safer and the prices weren't bad. The same with this Banks. I can go by the filter minder, or as I do to make me 'feel' at ease and clean it once per year, minimum. Earlier this year was the 1st time I cleaned it out twice in a 12 month period with all the cr*p I picked up driving through all the high winds of dirt and fire debris through Texas, New Mexico and Arizona portion of my last trip.
