Add a leaf
There should be a allen headed bolt that runs through the leafs that keeps them all together.. The head of the bolt also serves to center the axle to the springs

I bought a Heliwig 2500 lb overload set up for my GMC, and it works great loaded, but you need a kidney belt when empty.Mine are cinched down pretty tight, and I think if I backed them off a bit it would improve the empty ride quality:2cents:

Vacuum and power steering pump recommendations
We did a reman steering gear, pump, new lines, and installed a filter in the return line from Oreilly`s for a little over $300 bucks, Not sure how much better the Borgeson is?? Just depends on what fits your budget. When my Son brought his 99 home everything in the left front engine compartment that could leak, was leaking LOL! it was so bad you could not even tell where to start. 1. Transmission line rubbing against the frame.. Fixed 2. Vacuum pump installed rebuild kit.. Fixed 3. Steering gear box... Fixed 4. Hydro boost.. Looking at a rebuild kit when he has time to park it for a few hours Its been quite the experience, but he can almost park in the driveway now:thumb1:

Rear axle noise
This new rear end is a limited slip.. I know I have browsed a tread here where the debate was whether "limited Slip" gear oil is sufficient, or an additive still needs to be put in?? I guess we can see as we go? for now he seems to have gotten a hell of a deal.

Vacuum and power steering pump recommendations
Not trying to change your mind.. but we did a rebuild kit from Geno`s on my son`s 99, and its been great for over a year now. they are really quite simple once you get one apart. don`t quote me, but I think they are under $60 bucks as well

Rear axle noise
Thanks guys for all the input! He ran the VIN by the local stealership, and it is a D70 with 4:10 gears. He may have had a stroke of luck today.. A local salvage has a match from a burned out 99 for $500 bucks. They said they would guarantee it and drop the cover off for inspection:hyper:If its good n tight I don`t think he can go wrong with this. Judging by the shape of the spider gears, the axles are probably not far behind in the present rear end. I`m thinking we will try to go with Caj`s wisdom on this one:thumbup2: - - - Updated - - - It was`nt really making a clunk. when I saw it for my self it was a sharp "pop" and you could visibly see the tire shake. The spiders are so bad you can jack it up, turn one tire and the other one does`nt turn at all. Frankly I am shocked that he has`nt noticed it a long time ago.

Rear axle noise
Spider gears are shot.. I need to identify which axle I`m dealing with for parts info.I googled Dana`s home page, and they are a huge Company. Is there a standard axle in 99 or do you need the VIN?
-
Rear axle noise
well, we dropped the cover off this evening and the spider gears, and pins are all extremely loose. The gear to the left axle in particular has at least an 1/8" slop in n out. This is my first trip into a Dana but it looks like pull axles, and drop the third member out to get to the spiders... Ring and pinion look good. If the axles are salvageable it could ease the pain:pray:

Are all custom valve bodies created equal?
I think some of the better companies like Goerend could custom taylor to your driving needs.. There are endless modifications depending on what you want it to do.

Rear axle noise
Did`nt get a chance to look at it today he`s been working with another rancher all day.Cajflynn what was the fix in your case? Axles, spider gears? what you said is exactly what he described.I really don`t think its limited slip, but we still need to get a look at it.

Rear axle noise
Talking with my Son this morning, He told me his 99 has began making a "poping" sound when he accelerates while turning.I thought I would try to get some preinspection info, or advice before we drop the cover off this afternoon. He changed the pinion seal and gear oil last summer with some Oreilly brand synthetic, and not being there I`m not sure if its a limited slip or not??I know GM vehicles have required what everyone called a "fish oil" additive for clutch pack diffs.I`m hoping this is the best case scenario.

What torque converter
I`ll second that.. Transmission is far to critical, and labor intensive to cut corners. There is nothing like having to do something that sucks twice. just my:2cents:

3rd GenerationTransmission air to oil cooler upgrade
The AC condensor is out front, and then sandwiched between the intercooler and radiator is a bare aluminum finned cooler that now appears to be plumbed to the power steering pump?? (My bad) I was under the truck awhile back scouting for a good lift pump location, and I noticed the transmission lines are plumbed to a small box looking device behind the FWS and then continue up to the front of the truck. Am I right in assuming this thing behind the FWS is the factory cooler?? Please forgive my ignorance here I`m still learning all the gadgetry equipped on these trucks.

Black Smoke/puff only when starting
Maybe I should rephrase my earlier comment.. Mine is more of a blackish grey "haze" rather than fog LOL! but it does smoke when you stand on it. - - - Updated - - - On second thought, maybe I`m just blowing the soot buildup out of the exhaust cause I normally drive like a 70 year old man, but I have experienced a touch of road rage before:lol:

Two stroke oil and CR injectors
right at the "E" with the idiot light going off:think: you think I`m just never getting below 6-8 gals between fill ups?? I have never actually researched the capacity anywhere.

Coolant flush
It is the block heater:whistle:I just went out and looked again. its right behind the oil filter.. This is a little scary now. I had a bad experience last week with one of the heaters on my Ford tractor. If this thing does`nt come out clean, or snaps off its going to turn into a major cluster #%&!. - - - Updated - - - All is well.. The block heater came right out, In fact it was actually a little bit loose. Got everything flushed, and changed with a new 190 degree thermo. I don`t know if its the HOAT antifreeze or just the Cummins engine, but the inside of the head under the thermostate looks like brand new??? not a speck of corrosion, and shes got 151K on the clock.

Two stroke oil and CR injectors
I can only get 26 gals in my short QC and I`m running 16oz which equates to around 200:1 What is the vent mod your refering to??
-
Coolant flush
Yes, pass side.. It looked like a fitting pipe threaded into the block, and then there is an odd looking electrical connector with a treaded ring that connects to it??? Am I looking at the block heater LOL!

Black Smoke/puff only when starting
My sons 99 does this as well. its got around 200K on the dial. I`m a little curious you say it does`nt smoke when you get on it:think:? My CR does`nt make anything really noticable at startup, but when you kick it down to pass someone it usually leaves them in a pretty decent fog LOL! I was following a kid in a second gen through town the other day with stacks on his truck, and he obviously had a tuner cranked up. He was genuinely entertaining himself blacking out each intersection he stopped at ..

Coolant flush
I noticed a couple weeks ago while doing an oil change there is what appears to be the temp sender on the right lower portion of the block, around the motor mount.. it has a slow drip coming from the pipe threads. I`m gonna try to reseal this while I`m there. It looks like a good place to flush from, or is there another plug somewhere else?
-
Coolant flush
Planning on flushing, and changing antifreeze this weekend.. I`ve got three gallons of Zerex G05 (HOAT) Oreilly`s had to special order, and four gallons of distilled water left after doing all the tractors last weekend.I`m wondering what the capacity is? Is 6 gallons 50/50 mixture enough?

2% Biodiesel and Canola Oil
You may not be able to find 2%pump bio, but I bet you can find pure soybean oil at a county farm supply... By that I mean a place where they sell bulk fertilizer, and chemicals. Oddly enough here in NE Oklahoma we only have #2 ULSD?? and pure bean oil is $3.59 a gallon. I plan on trying it in my tractors this summer. As for my truck I`m playing it safe with the two stroke

Losing faith in Napa's calipers
Mike have you ever researched different brake fluids?? I have never given much thought to it before, but I know there are high dollar fluids designed for racing, and heat resistance? Just:2cents:

Drop fuel tank or lift bed?
:lmao:I love this! I can fetch a wrench with my free hand with the best of them, while not spilling a drop of Bud Light. Having a buddy like this is priceless

3rd GenerationTransmission air to oil cooler upgrade
The factory trans cooler on my 03 seems to be almost as big as the radiator dimensionally... it looks like it would be hard to improve on???
