Happy New Year to all!
Happy New Year everyone! I hope 2024 brings us all more peace and prosperity. I for one will be hoping for a better start to the new year since the end of '23 was not a great one. Mom had some infections partially due to her diabetes and dad was involved in a bad accident totaling his 2022 dodge ram 1500. It was not his fault luckily but he has been in the hospital or rehab since October 27th. It's been a long difficult time trying to take care of mom at home and dad in the different facilities trying to heal. Also hoping and praying for a change in our country's government this next year. We need to get out of this terrible situation we are in as a nation. I'd like to extend well wishes to our friend @Mopar1973Man who we all know is dealing with cancer once again. Prayers to you my friend as well. We are all here hoping for the best outcome possible for you. I'm sure that there are others here with their own troubles in their personal lives, to you I wish you well. I hope that things work out in your favor. Well wishes to all in this new year and prayers to those that need them. From my humble home to yours, HAPPY NEW YEAR! Bill......

HELP Power Loss When....?.....
Not familiar with that turbo but do you drive the truck hard enough to work the waste gate? I recently discovered that I don't work mine hard enough to open the waste gate and it can cause a build up and eventually the gate gets stuck closed. I now occasionally run her hard to clear it out.

2nd Gen Cummins heater temp differences between trucks
I have tried the recirc while driving, it does kick out quite a bit more heat. I to will do this to get the cab warmed up on a cold day then switch back to outside air once cab is warm enough. My truck don't seem to see the vent Temps near 160° like you guys. I've gotten to 135 I think (been a while since I checked it) bit I haven't wanted to pull the hvac box again to investigate. The heater core and a/c coil have both been replaced so no real need to do all that work again. It gets warm enough I guess. I do run a winter front for the colder months and a 190° t-stat. I got off track, what @Tractorman described is accurate. There are air fliw vents to allow the cabin pressure to remain neutral regardless of fan speed i believe they also help during summer months for a/c and when you have a window slightly open.

NV450 5speed blew at 184k miles.
At least you caught it before you finished and installed it. Lol It's frustrating but if that's the worst thing that I did I'm in good shape. Just gonna cost me more labor to make it right is all.

NV450 5speed blew at 184k miles.
@Tractorman, I have been racking my brain thinking of what could have been wrong. I have found the problem! In reviewing pictures of my build and comparing them to other pictures online I noticed I have installed a synchronizer ring facing the wrong way. On one side it has a bevel or a slope to it, on the other it is more of an "L" shape which would enable it to recess below the teeth of the gear next to it up against the gear face. Below are pics that I have circled the shift ring that is backwards. This is my install....incorrect Now the proper way below If you look closely at the syncro ring you'll notice the sides are different. With the sloped side against 1st gear it won't allow the ring to travel enough to fully engage the 1st gear syncros. With it flipped to the proper orientation the ring will be able to recess up against the face of the gear and fully engage the 1st gear sycros. I hope I explained that all in a way you can see it. Sometimes my explanations can be clear as mud. Lesson learned here. I will run it as is until warmer weather returns. It will be an easy fix once the trans is back out.

Well, truck is back together. Unfortunately it will have to come apart again. When put into 1st gear it immediately pops out of gear as the clutch is released. All other gears seem to be just fine. I have to admit I was severely disappointed when I discovered this. I've put some good time and effort into this in the midst of other things in life I've had to handle lately. Plan is to run it as is until spring/summer and pull the trans back out and investigate.

Got some more work done. This has been a long process but there were outside forces slowing me down. I finished the build on the trans, installed the 5th gear and special locking nut with plenty of red loctite as well. Installed the new cast iron tail housing then painted the case. Then installed the new flywheel, disk and pressure plate. Top is back on the trans, a light coating of grease on the input shaft and housing to ease the install through the throwout bearing, disk and pilot bearing. She is ready to install. I have help coming Saturday morning to assist the install. Fingers crossed she'll be back on the road tomorrow afternoon.

When I'm completely finished I will give a cost breakdown. I had to buy a few tools to do it so I figured that in as well.

Well she is starting to look like something. I've got the mainshaft installed, 5th gear syncro installed. Got held up since I don't have any hi-temp red lactate. I'll pick some up tomorrow. I'll need that to install the 5th gear nut. Then put the side pto covers back on and add some oil. Lol kind of shift through the gears on the bench before I put it back under the truck. Trying to double check everything since this is my first manual rebuild. Fingers crossed!

Hello from Tennessee
What will be the end use if the truck? I assume we're talking about the 2nd gen mentioned in your first post? Are you looking to build a puller, drag truck, a heavy duty tow rig or a crazy powerful driver?
-
Hello from Tennessee
Plenty of knowledge here on maintaining and modification. Most tend to lean towards minor power upgrades, fuel milage and longevity but there are some power hungry owners on here as well. We all use our trucks for different reasons and have different goals for our build. We also have a vendor section, articles on several different topics and many sub forums as well. I encourage you to browse the site. There is alot here. Enjoy!

Absolutely, so far it doesn't seem to be real difficult.

Still haven't messed with the hub yet but I did clean up the case and install the countershaft and reverse idler gear. I began assembling the new main shaft from the output end. Once the stuck hub is off I'll be able to finish up the main shaft. I can get the bearing race out of the input shaft bearing retainer. Almost be cheaper to buy a new one than buy the tool to remove it. So that may happen. Looks so Shiney and new!

NV450 5speed blew at 184k miles.
So how about an update. I have the trans tore down, case is all but empty. Main shaft is 2/3 tore down. I ran into an issue removing the 3-4 syncro hub, it's a press fit on a splined shaft. I do not have a press, tried pulling it with a 3 jaw puller per the nv4500 service manual. That didn't work, the jaws are to thick to get behind just the hub. Time to find a suitable puller or borrow someone's press. (A friend has one a few miles away.) Once this hub is removed I will be able to begin the process of stacking everything onto the new main shaft. The one that came from the trans appears to be oem, only half splined 5th gear. It did have an aftermarket 5th gear nut on it with a pinch bolt. When I loosened the pinch bolt the nut itself was barely finger tight. This nut is supposed to be torqued to 280lbft. So sooner or later that would have failed also. Here's a few more pics of the destruction. And some new parts..... Thus is the hub I need to remove to finish tear down on the main shaft. She's on there pretty tight it seems. Once removed I have some cleaning to do in the case then install new bearing races, install the counter shaft, reverse gear idler and then begin reassembly of the main shaft. That way it keeps loose parts on the bench to a minimum.

OMG cracked head or bad injectors?
Yep, I did. I enjoyed chatting with @Mopar1973Man about all different topics. Always an informative and interesting conversation.

It will be replaced. The southbend kit I ordered comes with new flywheel.

Trans was definitely pulled at some point. Found a LUK clutch in there today. I pulled all the old clutch components off, removed the adapter plate and the rear seal plate. Seal is now changed, not installed on the engine yet though. The clutch that was in there shows some signs of extreme heat. I have seen worse but this is bad enough. Also, if you look closely at the friction disk and pressure plate it did not have full contact. Looks as if it may have had oil on the friction disk.

I was talking about the Lucas additive with the Mobile 50. Not to try to shore up the thin stuff. I was curious as to whether or not it would help the mobile 50 adhere the the gears better.
