  1. Way back, I had a very well used '83 Ford Ranger (only built 83-4) with a 2.2 natural diesel (Mazda built Perkins)... my friend's S10 would just walk away from me. Over the summer it lost all but 1 glow plug... when winter came, I had to go search out new GPs. Darn tuff to start on one cylinder. The transmission came loose from the bellhousing & cracked the case... it wasn't worth fixing.BTW, what triggers our grid heaters? IAT or some other senser?
  2. 12.5? Just what did you do to it? (To be sure I never do the same). OUCH!
  3. Several years ago, wifee's sister was warming up her Chevy pickup in our driveway. Stick shift, running in neutral with E brake on. I guess that was ok at her house in Maine. At the time, Sheila was a DEM caretaker, house leased from them. Next thing we know, said Chevy has rolled back across the gravel road & down an embankment into the woods. Headlights were now pointed into sky. I don't recall there was any damage & we towed it back outta there. Could have been much worse.
  4. Maybe I'm all wet but I'm still doing as I was taught years ago. I fire up, watch oil pressure until it peaks... idle another couple of minutes for the oil to circulate & then start driving easy. I don't put a serious load on it until I'm pretty well up on the temperature guage. I guess I'd be hard pressed to document it but this was the thinking back 60-70's. Is there something new out there I can point to?
  5. My wish list... Would be to T the IAT sensor with a line to an in-cab switch. Sensor on... used for starting & maybe hot weather. Sensor off... after starting & cold weather.
  6. Just a Q from the peanut gallery... If the IAT Fooler advances the timing... and the various performance boxes alter timing & fuel parameters... Why do we need to IAT Fool? Does the box not do the job? What will the interaction of a box + IAT Fooler be? Inquiring minds want to know!!This is fascinating.Russ
  7. Is there a down side? Once warmed up, does the IAT fooler do anything nasty of the high end?
  8. Yes, it is disappointing. These trucks are just reaching their prime... lots of them in use. Dollars & cents...
  9. This makes a huge amount of sense. I often leave the MPG Average display up. Since I'm stock, the overhead is accurate. Even on the same trip a big difference is noted between warmed up VS cold start. I know not all agree, but I believe the cold front helps bring IAT up. Anything that improves MPG will be very welcome indeed. If this works, it will be revolutionary. I want one!!
  10. Do you need to get the truck back up super quickly or are you a pessimist? (Or do you have reason to suspect a serious problem the will require head replacement anyway? It just seems that cleaning the head up & putting it back would be much cheaper. If the head fits, as the others have stated, that's fine... You end up with a spare head to store or resell...Russ
  11. I am planning guages... I guess a Boost guage would be a serious requirement if a turnbuckle is used on the waste gate rather than recalibrating with a J hook & heavier spring. I am a bit surprised as I sure didn't hear much whine towing @ 2000 rpm or not much more... What rpm does the boost begin to be a factor?I don't see it explicitly but some have said that the XZT+ has boost fooling built in... no need for a separate boost fooler. Must use a turnbuckle or J hook however to physically secure the waste gate. Am I getting good information here? Thanks guys,Russ
  12. I can do without black ice big time! A couple of years ago, I was in the neighboring town... Voluntown Ct. Headed home I just eased into the fuel (stock truck, remember) & next thing had the whole d*mn truck side ways of the State Route 138... at about 35 or 40. When yer skiddin' sideways like that it always seems like a speed factor of 2! (ie: 70-80) Fortunatedly there was a wide Y in the road at that point, I had space so I turned into it & brought everything to a stop. Almost as much fun as putting my boss's S10 on a guard rail in the rain. I was running parts shuttle between his 2 shops. Down on Rte 1 in Mystic, Ct, the guy in front of the guy in front jacks up to let traffic pass so he could make a left turn. I could not see the turn signal (if any) because of the larger vehicle in between. I got on the brakes but didn't have enough room. There was opposing traffic (why the first guy was waiting) so I could not go left. If I stayed in lane, I'd hit the vehicle in front. I went to the right, looking for some more space... that S10 went sideways... when I ran out of ground, it slid up on the buried end of the guard rail. There the truck sat like a See-Saw, when the boss's brother drove by. The cops came. In due course, the bitchy little S10 was winched back on the ground. When I get back, my supervisor says "I was going to warn you about the brakes locking!" No people were hurt. They paid me back for the tow truck... truck wasn't hurt. I just needed new shorts.
  13. NO. I can't imagine driving through debris like the picture. I was a bunch braver in my youth. I went trail exploring with a 2 wd GMC p/u... to get the lay of the land for horseback riding... I ran through some moderately deep mud puddle. Concealed under the puddle was a large branch... when I drove onto it, I came up & stove in the driver's door! I pulled the inner panel & popped the worst of it out but a large divot remained. My soon-to-be-ex grumbled about the dent when she got the truck but it didn't matter much as she wrecked it within a year. (No longer my problem!)
  14. Nice set up. Right angle bracket off the frame. I sure think it's better than outside the frame.
  15. Mike,I think the difference is your AD is mounted across the truck, not the side rail like the long bed... What is it mounted to?

  17. My new Quadzilla XZT+ arrived today. I only ordered it Tuesday, dealer drop shipped it directly here. (I think I got a great deal at $275 shipped.) The 3 position switch offers "stock", "+30", "+70". (Yes, the instructions state +70, not the +65 frequently seen in advertizing.) The +30 setting is also described as "economy"... It is very interesting that +30 is more economical than stock. I like the ability to down load all the tuning programs to my computer & save them. Then the user can download them to the XZT+ at will. The download over-writes the previous top tune only. (Nobody else is getting Jack fer Christmas... I spent the money on my CTD. I may be in the dog house after this.)Russ
  18. All the toys under the tree. By the time I get them on the CTD, the slick roads are going to prevent properly exploring the limits. Already can't wait for Spring! How about YOU?Russ
  19. I saw that someone built a protective case for his AirDog short bed install. I don't think the is room to mount in the usual way on a short bed.
  20. I'm going to try to take this furnace duct heat shield to the next level. I'm going to try to use some roll aluminum I have on hand & make a double wrap about 3/4 around (~16" + more for the platform), leaving the side to the fender open. The push / pull should help to keep a air space to insulate the shells & besides look sexy. I'm planning some kind of base under this... perhaps plexi which I have a thicker used piece on the bench.
  21. I can't spend money on guns or girls right now... spent my Christmas money on one CTD. I'd be sorely tempted by a falling block carbine in .357M.
  22. The V band connection from my HY is smaller than the 4" exhaust which exhaust pipe enlarges in the first inch or 2.. I always thought (perhaps erronously) that the HX's different coupling removed that bottleneck. So, if the HYs elbow fits & is reused, that neck down remains. Is it significant? Inquiring minds want to know?Russ
  23. I just ordered the intake elbow... it arrived today. WOW!! That's quick. All the truck stuff I've ordered has come through the delivery services (others UPS, this FedEx) with blinding speed.
  24. That lower chamber has a hole in the side... it's some bypass obiviously. Maybe we need a coolant flow chart. I know with the Marine engines with bypass thermostats, if someone use an automotive thermostat in there, they'd cook. The Cummins may be diofferent... dunno.Russ
