  1. Hey has anyone had problems with reading error codes with a ScanGauge II? I'm kind of wondering about this. Being that I got one and had a guy stop me and ask about error codes on his 2001 Dodge Cummins. Well I did the scan with the SG II and came up with only 1 code a P0216 (yeah the death code). But the owner asked me if there was a way to do it without a scanner? So I should hime the key trick... Guess what??? The SG II missed a bunch of codes!!! PPCU - P1693, P0500, P1682 PECU - P0522, P0523, P0216, P1693... :ahh: Felt like a dumb arse standing in front of a guy with a tool I swear by that missed the entire boat load of codes... So have any of you had this occur with other readers or with your SG II?
  2. as my first post i would like to thank you guys for teaching me so much, however i am new to the dodge world and there is so much to learn! i have read that the key trick will not work to check for codes on a 2001 24v. is this true?i do the key trick and i get "P done." the reason why i'm asking is my truck feels a little sluggish. i'm getting good fuel pressure 16-17 idle & 12 WOT. no hard starts, sometimes a little gear hunt once in a while but nothing major. just wondering about the APPS. my truck just hit 81,xxx miles and i am concerned about things that might possibly need maintenance. i got my fuel pressure under control and i'm running 2-cycle oil in my fuel (thanks to mopar1973man) so hopefully my VP stays happy, just worrying about other things. also where is the scan tool port? hopefully my buddy can scan it quick for me. anyways, aloha!
  3. I just bought another 2001.5 2500 this one is 4X4. The check engine light has come on a few times. When I do the key trick it gives me PCU P0622 and P1765, ECU P1693 (companion code). Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
  4. My 1998 Dodge RAM 2500 Truck just stopped dead in the street and won't even try and start. IT has a 5.9 L inline 6 cylinder, 24 valve Cummins diesel engine. I hooked up an OBD II and got the following error codes listed below. The forum here has testing procedures but the first requires the engine be running (it won't start) and the other require a DRBIII scan tool (expensive). I'm just trying to get this running again without major expense. Any suggestions on where to start without the DRBIII? I can check wiring as indicated. Do the combined codes point to a specific item that needs replacing (the fuel injection pump?) with certainty? One thing I looked as said erasing the codes with the OBDII may allow it to start and run. I'm hesitant to do this since it appears some onter information may need to be read by the DRBIII if I have to take this to a shop. Any thoughts or recommendations??P0121 - Accelerator Position Sensor Volts Do Not Agree With Idle Validation Signal P0234 - Turbo Boost Limit Exceeded. Problem detected in turbocharger wastegate. P0253 - Fuel Injection Pump Fuel Valve Open Circuit. Problem sensed with fuel circuit internal to fuel injection pump. P1688 - Internal Fuel Injection Pump Controller Failure. Internal problem within the fuel injection pump. Low power, engine derated, or engine stops.P1689 - No Communication Between ECM and Injection Pump Module. Data link circuit failure between ECM and fuel injection pump. Low power, engine derated, or engine stops. Thanks! JimRAM
  5. On my way to school today I got a pending DTC. I stopped to check it out and got P0500 and p1693. Cleared it and then my ABS light came on. I looked up in my ultragauge to see if i had any other codes and got a P0216. Sounds like p0216 can pop as a result of others coming about. p0500 says theres no vehicle speed signal but I was getting a MPH reading on both my dash and the ultragauge as I was driving. None of this makes any sense... Damn truck! --- Update to the previous post... Parking brake light also stays on. --- Update to the previous post... This all sounds familiar, 1genro had this issue
  6. I think with a reader I can get feedback on my laptop but I don't know exactly how it would work. I would think I could see the exact numbers for all of my guages along with IAT info. I am not sure though. The 1997+ all had OBDII on them I just don't know what I can monitor, anyone got an idea? I was thinking of getting this http://www.laplogger.com/products.shtml?fily=wired_usb
  7. I didn't know where else to put this so, this is as close as i get it to the topic. I was reading through the code list thread and for testing it says "With DRBIII Scan Tool". How do i get my hands on such an expensive tool like that when they are priced over what i can afford? Are there other scan tools like this one that maybe Snap-On, Matco, or Mac Tools has?I'd really like to get my hands on one of these and have been wanting one for a while now. Thanks,Dave
  8. I have a friend with a 3500 that won't start. His friend did a diagnostic and there were no codes but he got a message that said, "1 no trip". I'm wondering what it means and if it's the reason for the no start? Thanks,Rob
  9. Well, I was going to take my truck in today to have the codes read because I had the p1693 companion code. To review, I started another thread about my truck choking out on the highway, where I could power through it or back off and it would go away. Then my batteries died and after installing the new ones the truck seemed to run great! Now to my new issue... Towed my rock truck to an event this weekend and the truck only "choked" a little on the way up. Coming back I had to drag my buddies trailer back. 40 foot gooseneck with two buggies on it. I'm guessing 16,000 pounds. Truck was running great, went to lay into the throttle going up a hill and holy cow I thought my truck was going to shake itself in half and break apart. Same symptons as before, I could power through it or lay off the throttle and it would go away. This happened in OD and out of OD. So I took it easy the rest of the way home because everytime I would get into the throttle this shaking, choking, thing would happen. Well, made it back to town and after unhooking decided to do the key trick. I got a pdone no more p1693. ( maybe my new batteries had something to do with this.) I fired up the truck and then stomped the pedal, in park, to hear my exhaust bounce of my buddies concrete wall. about 1500 RPMS it went pah, pah, choke, stutter, vroom. Sorry no other way to explain it. Did it a couple of more times and the same thing happened. I also noticed when this happened I would get a puff of black smoke followed by white smoke. If I steadily pressed the accelerator pedal it wouldn't miss a beat and rev all the way to 3K with no issues. But, as soon as I stomped it hard it would choke and do all the other stuff as it was in the 1500rpm range. I started the truck this morning and tried to repeat the problem and coudn't get it to repeat the problem. Got to work and tried it after the truck warmed up and the symptoms were there again, stomp the pedal, choking, cough, pah pah, vrroom, black smoke then white smoke and still showing a pdone code. Help!!!! Sorry for the long post but don't know how else to describe it. So what do you think is happening or worst yet happened?
  10. I had a gent today tell me a secret about the 2001 problem with the key trick we all know that some of the 2001 will read ECM codes and other will not read but display a P1693 code. Well I need some help finding the answer to this secret. Now you guys/gals with 2001 trucks take notice to the criuse light color and also tell me if the P-PCU and P-ECU is display during you key trick...
  11. i have been chasing a problem on my truck for a while now and it has cost me alot of money. i have noticed a difference in my truck for a while now and have replaced just about everything. my truck does not seem to have the same umff it use to have. my throttle does not have that load on it like it use to have. it does not pull hard like it use to. my boost numbers are lower(47 max with wastegate hose plugged). i use to be able to hit 58. its a combination of everything and it is driving me nuts. here is a list of stuff i have replaced: vp44, timbo apps, neighbors whole tps, map sensor, iat sensor, trans sensor, no boost leaks, 3 different injector sets, swapped out different chips(edge, adr., smarty, fms, no chip), new air filter, changed fass filters. dont know what else to do. i honestly hate driving my truck the way the throttle feels. my neighbor has a 99 and i will turn his chip off (he has 150 injectors) and his throttle feels like mine use to. at this point i dont mind the power thing but more of the load on the pedal feeling. infact, it is harder to drive my truck the way the throttle feels flimsy. my truck has only 84k miles. do i drive this thing off a cliff:mad:.
  12. Mayne one of you can tell me what happened.I was going to take a look at how many hrs that are on my truck.(I know I was not doing it right but I tried anyway, I know the key should be on first)ok.I turned the key to accessory (not run) I pushed in the trip reset on the dash, held it in looking for the Hrs.nothing, when I released it showed the trip millage, pushed it a second time, it reset the trip.so I pushed it again, and one more time for a total of 4 times. While holding it in the last time I turned the key to run. 8| 8| 8| 8| The dash lights up, flashes, gauges start moving (not normally) where the millage is it shows the (idiot light) for the fog lights then a letter (and where the millage was is it was showing a row of numbers they changed as the lights and gauges changed? It cycled like this for a while then stopped. I turned it off and walked away. What was that all about?I never cycled the key 3 times to retrieve the codes(no cel) I Put the key in and turn it ti the first stop (accessory) ,pushed in the button on the dash to reset trip 4 times held it in then turned the key to run.
  13. I'm going to point out to everyone there is NO WAY to have just a P1693 code present during error code dumping. Yes the P1693 is a companion code and has no really meaning but... "This code indicates there is more code present in the other computer" So if the P1693 is in the P PCU that means there is more codes present in the P ECU. So if there is a P1693 in the P ECU that means there is more codes present in the P PCU. Then even in rare cases seeing the P1693 code in both computers pointing out that both computers have codes. But there is NO WAY for the P1693 to be the only codes present during error code dump. It's totally impossible! The reason I'm posting this is because it seem like everyone is cancelling out at the first P DONE thinking its done. WRONG! There is TWO computers in the truck. P PCU = Powertrain Controller Unit (Passenger side firewall) P ECU = Engine Controller Unit (Driver side of engine block) You should always see both P PCU and P ECU displayed and 2 P DONE's in the display. If you want to see a video of this and how to properly do it please reffer to my web site and watch the video I produced so you can give us acurrate information on your problems your having with your truck. Here is the page with the video of how its done... http://mopar.mopar1973man.com/cummins/2ndgen24v/obd2-error-codes/obd2-error-codes.htm Now the other thing is alot of people are getting error code from OBD II sites or from manuals with the scanners. I'll point out that any code over P1000 is a manufacture specific code that only applies to the that make and model of vehicle so please refer to a proper Factory service manual and get the proper codes. I've got some books listed on my site provided by PDFTown.com http://pdftown.com/Dodge-Ram-2001-Service-Manual.html As for 2nd Gen 24V error codes I copied the error code listing straight out of the Dodge FSM for our truck and made a short PDF file for viewing... http://mopar.mopar1973man.com/cummins/2ndgen24v/obd2-error-codes/error-codes.pdf This will help us diagnose your problem quickly and properly.
