Angry & can't do it anymore, serious iQuad timing issues

Recommended Posts

So the galling on the trunnions is not a fatal issue, an issue that plagues all of the cummins for sure, but not fatal.. When i brought the parts to one of the model shop guys at my previous job essentially the cast iron was being cold welded to the hardened trunnions. The damage was more on the rocker itself vs the trunnion.

Id wager factory pushrods as well.. orange band was the giveaway..

Rockers and push rods should be here Tues. Still haven't found my dang Chiltons manual lol... thanks for yalls input, sometimes I'm pretty indecisive...

I doubt it, but I wonder if the new setup and a good lash adjustment will help with flow and egts?

Oh, how long do yall usualy run new valvetrain stuff before rechecking lash? Day or two? = 2 trips to work and back ~ 120 miles/ 2hrs~

Poll:

Being .010 and .020 is right in the middle and the norm, with that big gap where would you prefer to have it set at and why? If not the goto normal lash 10/20...

Middle, little tighter, little looser?

Be careful going too tight you could burn a valve or seat. I did 8 and 18 before and caused stalling issues. Injectors might have a say too depending on pop pressure too.

Guess Ill just stay with the tried and true 10/20.

My new rockers didn't come with the little black plastic retainer deals. Should I just take the old ones off and swap? I know they matter but would I be safe not using them?

The one time I set my valves I went with a "loose" .008/.018 (meaning it may have been closer to 9/19 as the last thing I wanted was to be too tight) and so far as I know I have no problems.  My engine had around 275k miles at the time, so I made a wild guess that my cam may have slight wear, so didn't want to give up any lift, and it may bring the overlap back into normal.  Now I wonder if since I really spend most of my time in the lower RPM range if I should have gone with the 10/20 or slightly looser to actually reduce overlap.  Without running it on a dyno, I'm guessing I'll never know.

Of course I'm running stock injectors and cam, auto transmission, 3.55 gears, and a HE351W, so my truck really isn't a good comparison for yours in any way!

Mine are a little on the tight end but that was 50k miles or so ago. It does seem to rev slightly happier like that. Main thing is the valve stems grow with heat so there has to be a few thousands of slack when hot or else the valve won't seat all the way and the edge of the valve and seat will overheat.

Edit:

Well you can not remove the black plastic retainers, since they are pressed in there's no way to remove and reinstall them in the new.

I guess fyi if no one knew...16546416019326106836408631744434.jpg.261bebcd3ffff776cf90358b8e53d570.jpg

Checked valve lash twice, change engine oil and trans oil, done a apps reset, fired it up and its sounds great so far. Revs seems to have more pep/quicker.

Might just be in my head though lol.

I'll have to wait to drive it, had a few adult beverages while working, so no driving for me.

That's cool! I didn't know it was the newer design...

Well the test drive went OK. Didn't go very far lol, fuel is to damn expensive to test drive haha.

Parked the truck, mowed (7 acres) then moved truck back later, didn't notice it at the time but the starter stuck ON when I started it and I didnt noticed it till when I tried to shut it off... frantically ran to shop and grabbed 1/2 and ran like raged wildebeest back to the truck to disconnect batteries...

It's a new starter from oriellys, not the best but it will work till my I rebuild oem one.

So my guess is the new starter went bad quickly. I don't think it's ignition switch, I will check the starter relay though...

What a day...

@Mopar1973Man what was your average speed?

Speed limit. Interstate I ran 70MPH. Other highways ranged 60 to 65 MPH.

Again I can pull good fuel mileage. No oversized tires, no lift kits, proper final ratio, and just the Quadzilla to manage timing and fuel. Still running my HX35W turbo and 150 injectors average EGTs was about 500 to 550 most of the trip.

In Seattle I had turn down to level 2 the concrete highways were slick I could break the rear tire loose just squeezing light on the throttle. When it was really rainy I ran 4WD to reduce the slipping. No CAD axle either.

Oh diesel was 6.279 when I got fuel. The whole trip cost 250 in fuel. This is round trip. Started in Lewiston ID for 100 and went all the way to Everett WA and back to Seattle to fill for 150. Then came home.
