I bought my truck 6 months ago with only 47,000 miles on it. It had sat for almost 4 years with a dead VP44. Before even starting or cranking the engine I changed the oil and filter. After running it for about 2,000 miles I started getting a very bad odor in the cab when I would stop at a stoplight or stop sign. Finally tracked the smell down to the engine oil. Starts getting that horrible stench around 2,000 miles or so. Any ideas on what it possibly is? Planning on getting oil analysis done as soon as I can get the trans problem taken care of and start driving it again.

Was the oil level rising and what kind of oil are you using?

Oil level stays the same. Dinosaur based Rotella. I am a diesel technician and have only found other engines with the same smell in them that have EGR systems, but not everyone of them. Some of them were even running synthetic oil. :banghead:

Quit using ROSMELLA and the problem will go away. Try some Delo.

I am guessing you have had this problem before from that response. :lmao: I'll give Delo a try next time I change it, with your mileage I can't say it isn't good oil.

Oh yeah. I hate that stuff.

I was going to say also that certain oils have a definate smell. I run amsoil and it REALLY has a smell to it for about 5K miles before it wears off.

The longer I run it the worse it seems to get. I think I'll try Delo, can't argue with almost 1,000,000 miles. :thumb1:

Probably just the oil. I had to quit using Rotella too, the smell was awful.

Is this a 12/24 valve thing? Have to say with 116K+ on the ole clock I have never had any bad smells (not oil related anyway :moon::lmao2:) . I ran Rotella but switched over to Amsoil for the extended life.Don

This would only effect truck with open crankcase vents.

That's it, now I got to try Rotella, got to see what this funk is all about:lmao2:

i have used rotella since my truck was new and never smelled a thing. I know my ears and eyes are bad, hope my nose isnt going also.

My dad used rotella in his 03 and it would usually smell for the first couple hundred miles or so but then wear off. I have never smelled anything bad with amsoil, valvoline or cat oils.
