3rd Generation Dodge

This is a discussion forum of the 2003 to 2009 3rd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L and 6.7L Common Rail Cummins Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system.

  1. Everyone seems to grasp that a larger exhaust on a turbocharger vehicle will gain faster spool up, increased power and thus faster acceleration. Here is the theory behind the phenomenon: The turbine housing is merely a volume for which exhaust gas (energy) is transmitted from the engine, to the turbine blade, then dispelled into the atmosphere. In order to better understand how this works we need to take a look at pressure. Turbines in general work off of a pressure differential. A pressure differential in layman's terms is the ratio of pressure before the turbine blade, and after the turbine blade. The greater the pre-turbine pressure compared to the post-tu…

hey guys im new here.i have a 03 dodge 2500 5.9l cummins truck. i just overhauled the engine i.e. rings pistons bearing valve seals etc.. fitted it back in the truck. when i just started driving it it had no power, but eventually by driving it more n more i saw the power coming back every day. i went on a 3 hr country drive with it n there are times when it feel sluggish and has no power with a lil black smoke. then there are times when it comes back n runs great. ive got no codes related to this prob btw. just one about fan speed n another for brake switch. ive noticed since this week that this doesnt happen at nights when its cooler. now in the day time it sound like ai…

Question - Do you lube your lug nuts or not? If so, what do you torque them too? I have always used anti-seize and torqued them to 135ft lbs. But last weekend I was going down the highway and my front right tire decided to pass me up. All 8 lugs were ripped out, and it looks like I had over torqued them. I realize wet the torque should be reduced, but never had a problem until last weekend. I have a 2007 2500 megacab and the hubs are ~6 months old with ~5k on them. Any suggestions? Thanks, Philo

Looking to get a newer Truck than what I currently have, just looking for mainly things that are common problems to watch for. I thinking 06-08 Quad 4x4 w/100k loved my 6 speed, the 1st one anyway, never an auto.

My son's 03 cracked the head and never missed a lick, started filling crank case with water, peged out the temp gauge and that's all she wrote. This was at hwy speed, wonder why it still ran ok?

Well, we managed to make it there and back!! The duck hunting was REAL slow the first 4 days, but the fifth day was very good. The ducks came in hot and heavy for about 30 minutes and then it was over!! And we had to break ice to set decoys out that AM. It was 18* that morning. Not a great trip huntingwise, but still a lot of fun with all the guys that went along. I'm glad I brought along my .17HMR to pass the time away plinking around. We also jump shot 4 "cacklers"......a small subspecies of the Canada goose. And typical for me I always wind up forgetting something on most every trip I make. This trip I forgot my camera!!! :mad Sure as dog poop, it was right where I le…

I'm thinking of putting a fuel pressure gauge in my '06 to keep a eye on the lift pump pressure,I figured running a stock setup, fuel was probably the most critical to keep a eye on. I wasn't sure if a 30 psi gauge was enough, so looked i've been looking at some 60 psi ones, I'm interested in this one. http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS-Performance-Products/555/41042/10002/-1?parentProductId= Where is a good place to plumb this in , and will I need a 'T', or is there a blind plug somewhere I can tap? Thanks!

I hear that adding an Edge EZ with Smarty would hurt your injectors and hurt MPG on 5.9 03? Any experience input would be appreciated. Don't want to advise others incorrectly as I have been asked this question before.

I was on my way home yesterday evening, and had to stop at an intersection a couple of miles from the house. As I was coasting to a stop the transmission made a noticeable downshift.. which I have never noticed it do before. I then turned and while accelerating the 1-2 shift seemed late and the 2-3 was late and hard. The road has a 45mph speed limit and normally the truck shifts into overdrive right around 45, but this time it wanted to stay in 3rd. As I got into town 25mph streets it still seemed to want to stay in a lower gear than normal. Checked the fluid this morning and it appears normal. decided to go down and check for codes. The truck n…

I experiment a lot with my truck. One thing that I'm at a loss to figure out is this...............When I'm cruising on the highway at 65mph without the AC on and the windows closed and the fan on only, my boost is running 4-5psi and EGT's are about 600*F. Get this though.........same conditions/speed.......I turn the AC on to recirulate mode...............boost drops to a steady 4psi and EGT's drop to about 550 or slightly less. Let me say this, both of these scenarios are running level ground with little or no wind. Does turning the AC on "advance" the timing that much more???? I've done the "tone ring mod" and run the Smarty on default settings. If I advance the tim…

  14. I have a 102k mile 48re in my 06 CR truck. I never tow more that about 5k pounds the other day I was accellerating up a hill with about 1500 lbs of 4 wheeler, coolers, trash, and butts and I think my T/C slipped a little. As soon as I felt and heard the slip, I got off the throttle. My question would be, what do I need to have a good reliable build without using a full billet input, output, and intermediate shaft, nor do I think I need a triple disc T/C or a complete rebuild. Yes I'm cheap and if I have to rebuild it, I think I'll do it myself. Where might I get the things I may need. I have a super chips vivid tuner 5 inch exhaust, and a AFE intake. 3:73's and 35's.

Been absent for awhile due to long hours working on my tractor and pulling it. Anyway truck always starts cold, drive it get it warm go into the grocery store for example. Come out try to start the truck engine turns over, engine spits and sputters but won't run. Turn the key off, turn it back to star, and it catches right away. Threw a code that stated improper voltage to power module. Checked bat cables found one lose, tightened it. All is well for about a month. Repeat no start same symptoms described above. Found another lose bat. cable clamp, so I again checked the others and tightened them. Last week it does it Wed. and again on Thurs. and Friday. So into the dealer…

  18. Hey guys, I have a 2004 3500 SLT single rear axle 5.9. Had an issue come up within the last week. Had my injectors and tubes and TPS sensor replaced about 6 months ago because of a starting issue. At wide open throttle 2500 RPM sounds like the wastegate dumps open and I lose all power but if you keep it floored you can see the RPMs climbing slowly. As soon as you let off the pedal and hit it softly you gain power again but right at 2500 RPMs it drops off again. Only code stored is a fan code p0483. Haven't had a chance to test the fan but it seems to be working.. I tried disconnecting the fan and driving it but it does the same thing at 2500 RPMs. Any help would be great.…

Hey guys, just got this truck and the control arm bushings are shot! Looked all over the place and I can’t seem to find any markings on anything for the brand in order to get new bearings. I got some tuff country bushings from summit racing and they were too small. I have attached pictures with measurements of the current worn out bushings. Any help would be much appreciated!

That will do more than just scan for codes, i want one that will let me play with the computer in the truck, run diagnostics, and such. reason i ask, the AC on my 08 is no where even close to that of my 04, so i hooked up gauges, all seemingly ok, now it's time to do tests that the FSM says i need a scanner for. EG: With the scan tool, read HVAC DTCs. With the scan tool in Data Display, read the Evaporator Temperature Sensor voltage. things like that. So what scan tool do i need?
