Changed out a perfectly running HOVP44, for a SOVP44. Reason for the change was to help out in the top end, truck specs are: 2002 ram 2500, BD R700 twins, SAC 7x12 injectors (DAP), Airdog 200, springs & pushrods, arp 425's. We can't seem to keep the truck running now, impossible to start when hot, (starts fine cold), and if we immediately let off the throttle it dies. The SOVP44 was purchased from DAP. Batteries are brand new, full tank of fuel, no codes, timbo apps reset, blead the whole fuel system 4 times (high n low pressure), tried dropping the fuel pressure from 18psi all the way down to 12psi, no help, also pulled the Airdog fuse. Any advise would be grea…

Well i think my VP just bit the dust, truck was running just fine i left it running went in a store came out 10 mins later truck wasn't running, It cranked right up idled fine but when i gave it throttle it was not having it exhaust was gurggly and sputtered alot, so i limped it home about 10 miles going maybe 20-30MPH it would clear for maybe 3-5 secs at a time then cut back out. I got codes P1693, P1689, P1688,P0252,P0251,P0232 which = VP44 bad. I checked my fuel filter housing and it was full of fuel and it is still getting plenty of fuel so the Lift pump is good as far as i can tell, is it possible for it still work and the VP be crap? I also cracked the 1s…

I have 188,000 on my 2002 VP44. I hear they have a reliability problem that is starting to worry me. My gcw is 18000lb with my 5r. Should i just change it or at least line up a vendor that sells a reliable rebuilt. Any suggestions where to buy one?? Also do the orfices wear out on the injector nozzles that could produce a poor spray pattern? My mileage is going down. Truck is stock with no trick controller ( California). If i do change injectors what would be recommended?

Alright I am working through the process of creating a true instant MPG meter. In theory, I love that word, we should be able to know how much fuel is being burned. We know commanded duration, we know speed, we know rpms. Below is the rough draft #1 for my testing, I am not concerned about it being %100 accurate. So my Question is when it comes to injectors in the VP44 system. If the vp44 can produce 125mm3 of fuel per stroke in stock form, what happens when you increase injector size? Does having larger injectors mean the vp44 will produce more fuel, IE 200 mm3 of fuel? Or is the 125mm3 the vp44 is spec'd to p…

Yesterday while on my way home from out of town, I had just finished filling up, the engine sounded "odd", louder and with a rattle. It sounded like my older Ford Diesel when started cold with the cold timing advance engaged. About 10 miles down the road I lost most power, felt like I had maybe 20% throttle available and the CEL came on. I pulled off but couldn't pull a code. It felt fine at low speed so I reset the CEL and continued on but the problem returned after a few miles on the freeway. I was eventually able to pull a P0216 code and I've read up on what that usually means. Ended up limping home at 45mph taking back roads when possible. I thought it could ha…

Everything you wanted to know about the VP44 Injection Pump but were afraid to ask. I don't know if these guys do rebuilds or what but he knows his way around the pump:

Truck started hard one day and didn't do it for a couple days and it would start hard and sometimes spit and sputter and would come out of it. A few days later the 1693 code appeared but ran fine for a couple days. Then the truck died going down the road and wouldn't start back up. Assuming the vp44 took a **** but just wanted other input

I'm replacing my vp44, removed the old one without aligning the keyway to the 12 oclock position. Is it safe to bar the keyway into position without the vp44 installed? Like my profile says- unskilled (But eager to be instructed)

Unfortunately, while removing my injection pump, I dropped the keyway into the gear case. I'm going to fish around a bit more to see if I can get it out easily, but I know I'm likely looking at timing gear cover removal. The two things I'm wondering about are: - Whether or not it's necessary to replace the crank seal while you're in there - What gasket maker people prefer to use when reinstalling the timing cover I've searched quite a bit but have not found any solid answers. What do you guys think?

My injection pump is leaking where the number 3 injector line goes on. I had the line off and there was a groove worn in the tapered seat so i sanded it down and it quit leaking for a couple weeks now it leaks again. So there must be a groove in the fitting on the pump. I can get the line from cummins but they can't get me the fitting. Anyone know where I can get one? And does it just thread out or does it hold anything in? http://forum.mopar1973man.com/webkit-fake-url://535F2EDA-3C3B-41D5-9A53-884682DEB836/imagejpeg

Hello and thanks in advance I've got a 2001 cummins, 24v with a 5 speed. Its stock only with a BHAF swap and a turbo-back exhaust. I got the truck from my uncle and it was well maintained and have most of the records for it. has 240,000km's on the odometer Back in 2015 the VP44 was changed to a bosch remanufactured, its only got maybe 25,000km's on it since. so its basically brand new but outside of warrenty Anyways periodically I've notice a spot of diesel under the truck but have never been able to track down where it was coming from. the other day it left a big spot, so i decided to wash the engine bay to see if I've got any sort of wet spots. well today I …

I see IPVR16X injection pumps, and they say they fit only cab-chassis and medium duty trucks. Is this a 'physically won't fit', or a 'emission laws say they can't be used in pickups' statement? It seems to me that if you're going to put in RV275 injectors or larger, you may as well put in the VP44 model that was DESIGNED for those injectors! Of course the ECM, cam grind, etc. won't be similarly modified. A Duck Duck Go search has failed me, so I am now here inquiring. Blue Chip Diesel and Oregon Fuel injection mention them but say "medium duty only". Just wondering, I'm not really in the market for an injection pump right now. [Knocks on wood]

So the other day my truck would not start. When I turned on the key, the WTS light did not come on, then it would crank and crank and not fire. I opened three injector lines, but no fuel was coming out of them as I cranked. I finally used some starting fluid to get it running. Two of the lines still did not have any fuel coming out of them and the truck was running rough. I closed all the lines, reved the engine up and it finally started firing on all six. I was able to drive it, even shut it off and restart it, but then a few days later when I tried to start it it would just crank with not fire. I checked the voltage going into the VP44 and I do have voltage in wh…

Hi all, I have searched and searched for this info and I don't believe I have the answer. I need help. Short version: I need to replace stud and flange nut that hold my VP44 on. What sizes are they? How do I find them? Long version: I have been slower than molasses working on my VP44 replacement as I am not dependent on my truck for a living any longer. I went out to try and finish up. I lost one of the flange nuts that hold the pump to the mount. No big deal, I'll take an original to the parts store and get another. Well, it has turned into an ordeal. They tried it and said it was a 3/8" x 16tpi. Ok, order in 2, please. The…

I know this has been talked about a 1000s times but I just want to clarify a couple things. The truck is a 2001 with a manual trans. Hot wired the pump and it started right up. Good possibility that the ecm is going to be my problem correct?

Hello all.... I have a 99 2500 Auto 4x4.....I just killed my in tank factory lift pump after 340km it in turn killed my reman IP... I installed a Bosche IP Unit I had on stand by....I cycled the Lift pump 4 times at 25 sec each, then with all 6 lines cracked at injector end I cranked. Got good fuel squirt out of 4 5 6 holes,so i tightened them down... Cranked again and got good fuel squirt at 2 so tightened it down. 3rd crank session I got fuel at 1 and 3.....so I tigtened them down Cycled the Lift pump 2 cycles and started cranking to fire..... No fire... No codes After 3 plus hrs of continuos cranking I still have ZERO FIRE and Everything seems to check out I h…

So I thought I would pose a question today, since this is something I’ve been dealing with all day. What exactly does the offset key do in regards to timing? I’ve searched the inter webs and I can’t find anything more than a generic, “It works with timing the pump”, or “The key has to be calibrated to each pump”. What does it do? Is there a hidden ignition pickup or sensor in the gear cover that reads the key? Reason I’m asking is because my key is crushed (My F-up). I think at some point between 1998.5-2002, Dodge took either the crank or cam sensor out of the truck when built. I have an 01, and it only has one of those sensors. I’m wondering if the key is irrelevant on …

I decided to open source my stand alone VP44 electronics project. I started a github repository. It's far from a bolt on replacement. It's just a prototype but it has been running reliably for a couple of years now. Unfortunately, it's not a project for beginners and requires good soldering experience and there is one surface mount part on the board. The circuits have some high energy parts and requires some testing before operating. The software is not simple and has time critical routines. An in depth understanding of the MCU internal peripherals (timers, PWM) is also required. Any mistakes in assembly or coding can cause permanent damage to th…

Not having trouble, just happened to take a closer look at the VP44 today and noticed that it looks like it may have been replaced. I say this because I know how aluminum will oxidize over time (truck is an '01) and this looks way better than I would expect for an almost 20 year old piece of aluminum to look. The fittings attached to the pump look fairly new also. Just wanted some other opinions so please see the 2 pics I took. It actually looks better in person.
