2nd Generation Dodge 24 Valve Powertrain

This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

I know the oil pressure sending units and readout are not the best in the 99 dodge rams. Mine is fine when running but drops to 0 at idle. The engine sounds perfect so I assume it's the sensor / sending unit. My question, does using fully synthetic affect this at all? I wouldn't think so but thought I'd ask.

Just cleaning up my rewire job of W-T's genius redo and now I can't find the info on the way to redo the passenger side PCM ground wire coming out of the harness below the PCM going to the passenger side negative battery. It's the one with another of those suspect grey plugs and it use to splice into the cable that included the poor design ground wire coming in from of the engine and over the top of the alt from the 4 wire splice of PCM/ECU/VP44/PDC. What was his recommendation on fixing that other PCM ground? I've looked everywhere and can't find it now. Thanks. I'll be so glad when this is all done.

Any benefit to keep volt meter hooked up and drive around, to test if anything going on in different RPM's and speeds/gears? Read alot people that trans govenor seems to come into play with a/c leakage. When using cruise control my actual mph gains on flat stretches. I can set it at 65 and 3 or 4 miles later I'm going over 70. Haven't tested anything yet but think it might be a/c leakage, reason why I'm wondering about higher speeds/RPM's. Thanks

  4. I am currently experiencing fuel pressure drops when letting off of the throttle, however when under normal throttle my PSI is running between 15 and 20 PSI. I have the Fuel Boss that has a check valve on the return line and a month ago I cleaned this out and installed a new ISSPRO mechanical gauge with a snubber as I was having similar issues. My fuel pressure was good for a length of time, fluctuated from 18 to 20. Right now it will be at 19 under normal throttle, but when idling it drops all the way down to 8 and my engine begins to stumble as it is starving for fuel. Obviously an issue. My question is, can the return line banjo with the check valve on the VP44 fail an…

Is there any oil that flows through the head under pressure? Doesnt ALL the oil in the head come through the push rods?

  6. Hey so the truck I have is a 1999 ram 2500 5.9l cummins. lately ive been having this problem where when I come to a stop and go to take off, the truck will stay in first gear until I get rev to 2500+rpm and it will shift by itself or I can keep feathering the pedal to try and shift it. recently replaced gov pressure solenoid, speed sensor, apps sensor, I checked TV cable there is no slack in it. Ive noticed if I shut the truck off and start it back up and drive the first few stops the truck shifts perfectly fine through the gears but once I come to a few stops and try taking off it will start to stick in gears more often. Also no codes are present, any Idea of what else I…

Everyone knows I just did a coolant flush not to long ago and change my thermostat for the 190*F from NAPA. Come to find out the new thermostat tend to lean on the high side of the 190's. No problem. MPG numbers seemed good. I started to wonder about if I changed the thermostat from 190*F to 180*F if the IAT would follow? Guess what it does. Instead of the constant +40*F offset the 180*F makes roughly a +30*F offset with 80*F outside temp the IAT floated 105-110*F. If your looking for colder IAT temps then the thermostat will give you at least -10*F drop. This was only a 30 mile round trip to town. I'll leave it in and watch the IAT and ECT closely for the next few days. …

  8. P1765 Transmission relay open or shorted. So I remember that the Previous owner told me about a Torque converter Lock-up switch. He said that you could use it to lock the converter in second gear while pulling a grade. So I assume that the Jumper wire has something to do with that? Mopar1973man told me about a Mystery switch that someone did, and used an old High Beam floor switch but I can't find that article. If I'm going to have to suffer the effects of the jumper then I should reap the benefits. If someone has a link to the rewire please share it with me. Thanks Michael

2001 Dodge Ram 2500 ex cab shortbed auto, 24v, 4x4, Yukon 4.10 gears, 36” tires, 3in lift, DAP sac 7x.10 injectors, HX35 (turbo is next), quadzilla, 260k miles. Had my trans rebuilt by a local shop back in April that I’ve felt with for 10 plus years. They put a billet triple disc converter in that is lower stall. From the day I picked it up it stalls when put into either reverse or forward gear when 1st started. I brought it back this past week and re addressed the issue with them. They said they would take it out and send it back where they got it from to have them loosen it up and put to factory stall. Well it still stalls... I’ve read over the last fe…

Good afternoon everyone, hope you all are doing well. I have a pretty good idea but wanted to get some more opinions on my VP44 issues. I immediately get 0216 and 1693 after I clear the codes and start the truck. Here is the good trail.... It drives just fine unloaded and even pulling when it's cool. but when the heat starts to build, it seems to heat soak and then starts cutting power. The hotter is gets (truck and weather) the worse it does it. I drove it unloaded to work at 4 am this morning, ran like a dream. I never have less that 14 PSI, mostly 15-16 of fuel pressure. Seems to me it's pretty clear the magic computer box on the VP44 is getting hot and crap…

My 2001 Dodge Dually runs flawlessly but when I start it cold (40-60 degrees f) the transmission bogs the engine down. In some cases the engine stalls, other times the engine runs but cannot move the truck. Any ideas where to start? Should our engines idle for 3-5 minutes first? Thanks

Hello all, I am fairly new to this sight but see that there are many very knowledgeable people here. I have a 1999 2500 that I have swapped from the 47re to Nv4500 with southbend dual disc clutch, new VP, quadzilla tuner, airdog raptor 4g lift pump. Now I have a bad ECM. I am wondering if when having my new ecm programmed I should request automatic settings since my truck is originally an automatic or if I should have it programmed with the Manual trans settings? Will having the manual ECM negatively affect the original automatic PCM? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Radiator filled with engine oil...FAST! Took about 15 minutes to empty half my pan. Ran just fine. NO LEAKS in the oil cooler. Could an oil cooler gasket fail enough to allow that much oil into the water jacket?

I know this has been discussed often on this forum. Pertaining to the oil that can be used and how many quarts. And forgive me if this is common knowledge. How do you actually go about the draining and refilling? It’s pretty caked up in 17 years of goo. Didn’t really know what to look for as far as drain plugs and where you pour the oil in. And if the recommended service interval is 50-60k. I’m only 260k overdo at this point. Let that math sink in lol

Once again I have a odd-ball question to throw out there. My brother was visiting with us on his way back to S.C. and the 1999 Dodge Ram Quad Cab 24v 5 speed I sold him 3 years ago showed the PO216 code so he left it with me to check out and see if I could sell it for him. It's in great shape inside and out. Much better looking than the 1998 12v I occasionally drive to doctor appointments when my wife can't take me. The 12v is automatic and I have decided to sell it. I thought about buying back the 99 but the clutch pedal has to be all the way down on the floor to start it and put in gear. Is this normal distance on most manual driven Dodges? I'm wearing casts on both le…

My truck started to make grinding noise in low speeds, like 10-20mph. Today I drove behind a tractor idling 15mph with 2nd gear and I heard grinding noise coming from under the drivers seat. Noise is biggest at those low speeds and I think in 2nd gear. Transmission fluid looks ok and transfercase fluid is ok. Time to rebuild??? And it's 47re transmission. Thank you.

  18. I’ve searched quite a bit for info on this subject. But it always seems to pertain to trucks with after market lift pumps. My truck still has the stock lift pump. Are these hard starts still a VP issue? Truck runs just fine. For now I’ve installed a toggle switch off the ground wire of the stock pump. As long as the pump isn’t running starts right up I’ve yet to install a fuel pressure gauge which I know is a must. Was also looking for suggestions on a good one and wear to hook it up

A few months ago I noticed a small amount of oil on the ground and traced it to the vacuum pump/ PS pump are and resealed both pumps. Went a while without seeing any more oil until tonight I pulled the truck into the shop and an hr later noticed a 3 in dia puddle. It looks like it is either coming from vacc pump or front main or timing cover. The front half of he truck is plastered with oil which is very disturbing to me. ( no more rust is a + side lol) Cleaned up things good with brake cleaner and we will see what happens. Any idea why the pump would leak again so soon? Look like it’s possibly coming from where the pump mounts to the gear case. Really hoping I don’t have…
