I am re-building my 2000 CTD 2 wd truck after several bad MICHIGAN salty winters...geesh I wish I would have oiled the insides of everything like I know I should have.... Anyway I am looking to upgrade the wheels and tires and need to know "what fits" from other years ect? Looking to go with maybe a newer take off wheel in a larger diameter. This will be only a road truck, no off road, stock height, fiberglass boards, I do tow a 5 th wheel. I heard that 8 lug ford wheels were the same. I do not plan to buy new wheels but would like to find some in ex condition somewhere and get new tires. So ! any ideas?? Many thanks to all on this forum for all you do

  2. I have been told by others on a different site to dump my K&N air filter and go back to a paper media filter as they are better. Anyone know if this is true? I have a 2001 Dodge Cummins Quad Cab 4x4. Thanks

Well my Volt gauge is saying that I'm no longer getting 14 volts. Took it to an auto parts store to get a diagnosis &said it was the alternator. So I went to the good folks at Geno's Garage to hook me up with an alternator rebuild kit for my Denso. shipped to my door was a little over 40 bucks, as opposed to 150 or more. Should be here any day.Never rebuilt one, I'll let you know how it turns out. I'll pass on a piece of advice that one guy that checked my charging system offered, was to charge the batteries one at a time not in series. Just take off the negative cables. Don't want to replace these babies, one is 800 cold cranking amps & the other is 1,000 I slow …

I have a '99 3500 dually, and I just noticed that all of my marker lights are out. This includes the ones on top of the cab, the ones on the rear fenders, and the ones on the tailgate. All of the regular parking lights work (fronts inside the blinker assemblies & tail lights) and the dash lights too. I suspect that a fuse has blown but I can't decipher the legends on the fuse box covers. Is there a seperate fuse for the marker lights, & if so, where would it be located? Thanks for the help, Joe in St Louis

So, I've never had my truck aligned (I've put 135k) since I've had it. The tires have always worn evenly. I replaced the ball joints on the drivers side. Last fall the tires were wearing, so I took it in and had it checked. The toe-in was off, but I don't remember if it was positive or negative. He set toe-in at +0.10. He said the drivers side camber was at +1.35 and passengers side was ar +0.23. I told him to leave it and when I put new tires on in the spring we would do it then. I know both sides have 1 degree bushings already in the top ball joints. So, I decided to check camber the redneck way. I downloaded an spirit level app for my iPad. Parked on l…

Consider this a good tech reference, I have found it really useful for some of the odder items that I have needed to find over the years for different projects and whatnot. Not really directly Cummins or Ram related, but great stuff anyway. Billavista is a wizard from Canada and RCAF officer who has spent the past 20 years or so posting this stuff on Pirate4x4. Now, he has his own site. Below are my favorite and most useful articles that you guys might like to peruse. When the guy says Bible, he means it. His articles are very very through and have lots of great pictures. Gear Setup Bible http://www.billavista.com/tech/Articles/Gear_Setup_Bible/ind…

  9. Figured as long as I am going to clean the bottom side of the engine looking for a leak, we should talk about cleaning/detailing the top of the engine and the rest of the engine bay as well. engine on or engine off while hosing and degreasing? cover electronics/alternator or don’t cover? (If cover what are you using?) BHAF of course should be covered or removed, but stock airbox? is there a good dry enough finishing product worth putting on? thats a good start, I would love to hear what everyone uses and their method. Obviously pictures are always a bonus.

I want to bring your attention to heat core servicing. I know there is a thread over on CF explaining on how to do the short cut method where you cut the tube ends and hose clamp inside the truck. This gets around the idea of having to recharge the A/C. I would like to advise against this method being so far the HVAC I've open in the years all them are truly funky looking with everything from mice nest to like this one with packed hay and road dust. If you going to do a heat core do it right and take care of everything. This includes the stepper motor for the blend door, dust and debris on the system, check your blower motor for problem and resistor.

  11. I know you all know I've got four 100w bulbs on the bottom of both Dodge Ram trucks I have. Well over at RamForum I've seen a few Trucks with hidden fog/driving lights behind the grill. So I went to building the poor mans version from a piece of re-bar and flat stock. So now here is the stealth lights...

Had bearing in the blower motor thats been chirping to me on and off for a while. So this weekend I finally swapped it and the resistor out. Sure made a nice difference in the air flow. The old was one I replaced the OE with about 9or 10 years. The shaft was fairly tight and I am sure it took some extea power to turn. Anyway the extra air flow is nice to have back.

So I have Mikes CCV mod on my truck and it seems to puke a few teaspoons of oil at least a few times a week. To go along with that I have no 4x4 functionality. I am going to go through ALL the vacuum lines tomorrow (5/32" correct?) I am going to replace them all, and reroute them much cleaner if possible to get them where they aren't constantly in the way. Here is question number 1, if I have a vacuum leak(s) could it contribute to some of the oil puking? IF NOT, I need to figure out a way to catch the oil before my wife throws me out of the house :-) we cannot have oil on the driveway. I get that excess blowby could be caused by a poor functioning vacuum system, I …

  15. So I did the WT ground portion but I want to finish it and move the alternator cable from the PDC to the passenger side battery. My original plan was to use the original cable from the alternator and cut it and run it to a circuit breaker then use more of it from the circuit breaker to the battery. This will involve buying the circuit breaker, some lugs, and a crimper for the lugs. While doing some research on which size lugs I'd need to do this job I ran across that custombatterycables.com makes an 18 in 4 gauge wire with a fusible link to run between the alternator and passenger-side battery. The price for this cable is $31.75. So now the question, do I buy all the…

  16. 2002 3500 Dually. 5.9 Cummins. Bone stock. 91K. Works weekends and vacations pulling 37' Montana 5er. First post. Been reading and learning. I really appreciate the position that these trucks were engineered and built to run and be maintained as stock and that anytime "we" start doing deletes, adds and creative wiring other issues are going to arise and are only a bandaid to fixing the real issue. Anyway, I was having the torque converter issue at 55mph so decided to do an alternator rebuild and eliminate any AC leakage. Rebuild went fine, installed the rebuilt unit and the alternator would not work, not quite 11.5v at the connection. Gauge would show low voltage, the…

Are 10ply tires really necessary on a Ram 2500 4x4 ? I have 10 ply tires on my Ram but are 10 ply really necessary ? I have owned several 3/4 ton 4x4 and got very good service with 8 ply tires plus they are about fifty bucks less than the 10 ply. I do not haul heavy loads on my truck but I do pull a 16 fool featherlite stock g/n and a 18 ft flat bed g/n trailer for hay movement. So what is your thoughts ?

What's the biggest size tire I can put on a 16" rim?Right now I'm running 265/75/16s but am thinking of either 275s or 285s, will they work or hit the wheel well or anything else? All is stock on m truck, no lift kits or anything like that. Thanks in advance.I think I should have put this in non-powertrain - apologies.
