I found a small wire loom hanging from the truck which and one time was up under the hood. I dont know what it goes to but i traced the loom back to a connector in the drivers front wheel well between the inner fender liner and the fender at the front of the door. It is the single red wire coming out of the loom. On the way home my tranny temp gauge went nutty. Should not have anything to do with the above since it is not factory. I got home shut the engine off. Restarted a couple minutes and it was working fine. Coincidence ??

In my 40 years of vehicle ownership I've never had a rig that is so needy towards tightening the upper radiator hose. I start getting drips at the post office prior to full warm up about every 6 weeks and need to tighten the hose at the thermostat. Any ideas why?

Anyone have a source for them for a 99 truck? I can find 01 and up but none for 99. It's all coming apart for ball joints soon so now would be a good time to get some back on.

I'm curious to know of the 4 wheel ABS system can be retrofitted onto a truck with a 2 Wheel ABS system. Anyone know if it's possible?

  5. As the title states I have a chirping squeak under acceleration never heard something like this and whats worse is it is in the cab within the dash. Also the forward dash screws keep getting loose definitely becoming an annoyance any clues as to how to keep them tight and what may cause a chirping sound in the dash?

  6. Hi Guys, My 2002 truck still has the original batteries in it. While the weather is mild they are still giving good service - but coming up to winter I am not so sure this year. Those of you that have replaced your batteries, what did you use and how have they performed. I am considering going to Costco for the new batteries as I have had good results with their batteries on other vehicles and applications. Any info or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  7. My low beam on the passenger side is not working but works when you turn on high beam. Is this from a short in line somewhere or switch or what? Has anyone else had this kind of problem. I have changed the sockets out with new ones, checked for shorts (as good as I can while on the truck) on the harness but nothing to obvious. let me know what y'all think

I just changed my heater core and I went ahead and changed the ac evaporator. I have leak somewhere in the ac symtem I haven't taken the time to find yet. I didn't use the ac at all this summer. Winter is coming so I figured I'd wait to spring to fix it. My question is will it hurt anything by leaving it empty with no freon while running the heater and defrost? I've heard that the ac might cycle on when the defost is on.

You'd think I could remember after all these years but after all these years my forgetter is getting better! Some tires have a dot on them for mounting. The dot either goes at the valve stem or 180 deg. from it. The dot either shows the lightest or heaviest part of the tire but for the life of me I can't remember and I have 2 tires to put on my Kawasaki this week. Thanks for setting me straight.

  10. I have a 99 automatic and a brand new 15x5 SLM Enclosed trailer. The brake lights and turn signals work but the trailer has a bunch of LEDs and other running lights on it and they don't light up. They won't light up on my buddies 2000 24 valve dually either. Only the brake lights and turn signals work. So I'm curious if any of you guys have ran into this before. It's a 4 way flat and I'm using an adapter to plug up to the stock plug that comes on our trucks. I tried to call SLM but they are closed until Tuesday. I wanted to try to figure out what's going on this weekend. Any ideas?

Anyone know if the front bumpers and fenders are the same the whole way through the 2nd generation (94-02) ? I may have found a parts truck but I'm pretty sue it's from the 12v years and I thought I read one time the fenders were different.

Mike has answered all my past questions but here are some more. You guys probably don't believe that I was a diesel fleet mechanic and shop superintendent for 30 years. I think I have forgotten more than I ever learned and this new stuff has just passed me up since my retirement. Question: I have a vacuum pump that sucks 20 inch of vac. Is that enough to vacuum an AC system after disassembly? At NAPA buying my evaporator and thought I would just buy some compressor oil while I was there. There are 4 different kinds in the same brand. Which type do I use? I really should bring this truck up to mike and have him show me some spots to hunt chuckars with my bird dog before I …

  14. I am looking at buying a 2002 Ram 2500 HO 6 Speed with 235,000 miles asking 7,500. It seems to have been reasonably well maintained the owner has allot of service receipts. Here's a few pictures of the truck body is really nice (all redone last year new fenders ,doors, bedside and complete repaint...) but the underside worry's me...just want some opinions. Here's a few pics Thanks !

  16. Hello all. Sorry I havent been on much lately. Just been so busy with work and moving again. Anyway, I noticed the other day that my old cummins is extra rattly, especially during shut down. It almost has an extra thump-thump to it. I cant tell if it is just something loose under the hood or internal engine. I am very much hoping for an easy fix. I have a couple videos I took of it. You can definitly hear the extra rattle as the engine shuts down and a little bit of the thump while its idling. Video 1 This video has a loud thump at the very end but that was just my phone hitting the dash as the mighty engine slows down. Video 2 Hope the videos hel…

If anyone is interested, here is the size for the 3 bolts holding the gear box to the frame: Metric: M14 x 2 x 110 10.9 Class Roughly 4-3/8" from inside of head to tip I decided it was a good time to replace them because I cross threaded one of the bolts last time I replaced the gear box. I got 4 bolts and 2 washers for each bolt at Fastenal for under $20.

Well, I think I found the reason for my spongey brakes...all pads, rotors and calipers have been replaced/resurfaced in the last 2 years. Can anyone confirm this leak can hinder braking before I yank it? Thanks

So I picked up a set of Ford Alcoa wheels recently and overall I'd say they are in nice shape. Clear coat is nice and no big scratches. They aren't perfect though and have a few spots where the white corrosion is coming through. I don't really want to strip the wheels completely right now so I'm looking to spot treat these areas to prevent it from spreading. So what to do? My thoughts were to wet sand these spots out with real fine steel wool and seal them. Not real sure what to seal them with or if there's a better process. I know there's plenty of neat freaks on here that know a thing or two about keeping things shiny.

Hi all! It's soon ball joint time for me. In my research some say you need a $300+ tool set to do them. If that's the case I might as well pay a shop to do it but I like to do my own work. I've never done these but I did on my F2504x4 and I remember the loaner tool from Advance didn't have big enough parts to handle a larger joint like that. I have access to an arbor press and can make cups and stuff in the machine shop. Do I really need a ball joint press? Can't I just take the nuts off and hammer the joint loose from the axle and then take the whole knuckle and put it in an arbor press? Is there a write-up anywhere on this or for those familiar can you give me a step by…
