2nd Generation Dodge Reliability / Performance

This is a discussion forum of the 1994 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel of performance and longevity. This includes tricks of getting more MPG, HP/TQ, or just getting to the next milestone.

  1. So after much frustration and $$$ My front end is all squared away and the steering is as it should be. Tie rods, ball joints, Sealed adjustable solid track bar, leveling kit, wearable joints ect. Along with all the interior and body parts replaced. Would like to do control arms to match the 2.5" leveling spacers angle but back to the point on hand... I can finally start spending on the tranny/performance. First off, my Nv4500 is in decent shape, drives very well. But is not brand new anymore... Before I go out and try to find a clutch should I be dropping the tranny and checking everything before thinking about a clutch flywheel or anything else? I read this http://ww…

  2. Started by RPM,

So, I have posted my problem on another forum and I am not getting much response. A couple of weeks ago my fuel pressure began to fluctuate. What happens is that the pressure is fine (19 psi) when I start the truck but it will soon drop to below five PSI. It will return to normal after to sits a while, but the pressure will always fall again. When the pressure begins to fall my Raptor pump begins to whine until it is very noticeable as the pressure approaches five psi and I shut the truck down. I changed the filter twice, checked my lines, changed the overflow valve twice and I still have the same problem. The only thing I can think of is that the Raptor is bad. It has o…

I found a guy with an 02 edge comp for sale. Just wondering if anybody knows if it'd work in my truck. I plan to call edge but thought I'd see if anybody here knew first.

  6. Hey. So today I was stomping on the gas a little just getting a feel for new injectors as well as the TC+VB and other stuff had done recently. Seemed pretty good - good throttle response, no slipping and really grabs in 3/4th but I get home and doing some other work - and I notice the VP44 TAP has come off. (I have a stealth plate and the wire that runs from the tap to the EDGE module has come off - basically only attached to the edge now and no longer completing the circuit to the VP44. Yet power is still really good ?? So - guessing that the edge doesn;t constantly send/receive info the vp44 ? Basically once its set on Level 5 - it stays on level 5 - and now the TAP is…

1999 2500, 4X4 auto stock... 147K, inherit from Step Dad. Truck sat for about 4 yrs, monthly starting.PacBrake isnt actuating. I can assume it could have frozen (rusted linkage) or a relax/vaccuum issue. Ideas to check? I'm getting light on the powered dash switch, so its alittle more than a grounding issue. Can I disconnect linkage and action it loose?

It runs about 190 all the time when not pullin and the fan runs alot.. I dont think it should run that hot when just drivin around. Maby i need to replace the thermostate. I cleaned the radiator and intercooler but it still run to hot I think. Is this normal to run that hot or am i just . Thanks

Well I took my truck for a ride today. First ride since my new vp44.Total trip was 50 miles round trip. The truck is really running good now, like when I first bought it.Crusing at 56 mph, and 1500 rpms. Indicator shows 22 mpg. Nice to sit and listen to the turbo hum as i cruise along. Everything is so quiet now with the two cycle oil in the tank.Timing must really be working great because I don't even hear any rattling diesel sounds, everything is scary because it is so quiet now.I never realized how bad the engine was until it was repaired.Thats my post for now!

  11. Started by little white yj 622,

i have the AD 150 with a straw. i have been running 17 psi all the time.all the way to empty. just lately i noticed that now it drops pressure when comming to a hard stop at 1/4 tank of fuel. like to 5 or less just for a sec the right back up to 17psi. I did just put a needle valve on the line to the gauge, and it's open a little. can this valve be causing my problem? and is it ok to drop pressure for a sec or two? i going to open the valve full open untill i get fuel tomarrow.

  12. I wanting to make my own air intake since the aftermarket ones are SO expensive. So anyone made there own and would like to share your idea lets see it. I am Looking for ideas.

  14. I found my recent 2000 2500 truck aquisition very annoying constantly going in and out of lockup in the city or in hilly terrain so I installed a switch on the dash to disable the lockup solenoid. The extra lock-up sequence in 3rd gear was even more annoying as the 97 does not do this. This is not the "mystery switch" that forces a lockup and in fact is the opposite. The mystery switch is vey hard on the soft parts in the tranny when changing gears locked.I had done this in my 97 2500 and all I had to do was put a simple switch in to open the circuit to the solenoid. Last week I tried the same thing in the 2000 but it immediately went into 3rd gear limp mode. New software…

  18. Very annoying if I'm parked on a hill, the truck won't move at all. Tried all kinds of reset moves I've found online, and changed the fuel filter. It's been hot here lately and I've noticed my glow plug light is briefer than typical - I can't get the rpm's above 21-2400 until several minutes go by, then a big puff of smoke and I have power. Anybody have any ideas?

ok quick question ....i know the 98.5 nv4500 from factory was supposed to produce 230 if i remember correctly ..so nowfor the question ...over time if nothing significant (broken pieces in the motor or drive train) can one expect to lose ....mileage is 295,543. The reason i ask is im trying to figure where i currently stand horsepower wise ....i know the only true way to know is to put it on a dyno ....unfortunatley none close/affordable
