My daughters civic started pinging under acceleration. No codes but I changed the knock sensor and it improved but didn't stop it completely. I tried to check the base timing but you need to turn off the computer control of the timing by using a jumper wire. When I put the jumper in it doesn't change the timing so I'm not sure how to check it. Any ideas or is there a good Honda forum to check? Thanks

Good thing I haven’t finished installing my pressure gauge yet. Might have another job for it. My heater core might be leaking in wives 06 CRV. I get a wiff of anti freeze when temp gauge starts to move. I’m thinking that T-stat is also opening about the same time. I don’t see any wet floor or any wetness on hose clamps, but do smell it. Trying to confirm if I have leak or not. I think a valid test would be to plug off heater core and put about 5 psi into heater core and if no leaks, pressure should not leak out. Do you think that is valid test? Any other test I could do? Thanks

Just replaced a lady's engine in her 08 Nissan Sentra. It's a 2liter engine and takes 4qt of oil. when I drained the engine about < ¾ of a quart came out. She said she never saw the low oil pressure light come on. I guess that #4 rod going through the side of the block woke her up. Oh well.

Wife/grand-daughter found mice have chewed rear seat belts trying to get up through hole between seat cushions. After previously finding mice in cabin air filter, we opened the cowel, checked cabin air intake & plugged drains with SS pot scrubbers. She checked the cabin air filter NOW & found it to be fine. This is how the fresh air gets INTO the cabin. We suspect the mice are getting in through the REAR somehow. [My Dodge Avenger has a cabin air OUTLET in the trunk behind the carpeting "near the gas fill". It only goes through the trunk wall, not the outter fender & has a one way flapper on it.] I don't know where the cabin air goes out of the Hu…

Hey guys. Just thought I would post an update about the truck that I use for day to day work. If you remember about a year ago, I posted this thread... First off, I have really not been impressed with it. I am up to 170k on the truck today. This is the service history over the last year: Replace head gasket and cylinder head (head was warped to badly to salvage) Replace EGR cooler Pull and bake DPF twice now and I am already getting a dash warning about it being plugged (Going to replace the element soon) Two injectors failed so we put in a full set I am putting a fair number of miles on at about 1000 per week most of the time. The mi…

Wife let Jiffy Lube check cabin air filter... charged a rediculous amount for one... bits of fast food napkin, wool yarn, and a purple plastic toy frog (the topic of discussion at JL) but now she knows where it is. When she got home, we went out. She fished through the cowel slots & got a bunch more fluff. I think the slots in the cowel need better screening but frankly, it's the cowel drains where they are likely getting in. I don't know where they are but it has to have them. We've looked from under the hood... (thankfully it seems to be blocked from the hood hinge area). In through the wheel well. In around the engine but pretty darn tight. Anybody …

Looking at prototype photos and the article below there are some discrepancies. The article states a AAM 10.5" axle and a Aisin AS69RC transmission. The proptotype photos do not agree. The rear axle pictures is clearly the 14bolt semi float axle, which is built by AAM but has a 9.5" ring gear. The transmission is similar to but visually different than the AS69RC. Additionally, the AS69RC is HUGE overkill for 555 ft/lbs and a ~20K GCWR and expensive to boot. I think it's uneducated speculation by Truck Trend. What do you guys think? http://www.trucktrend.com/news/1507-video-nissan-shows-hardcore-fans-new-2016-titan/

Wife just sealed the deal on an almost new 2014 VW Jetta 2.0 l. TDI 6 speed manual with only 1300 miles on it. She is a very happy camper today. Going to put the 03 Jetta 1.9 l. TDI 5 speed w/ 271K miles on it up for grabs in a couple weeks after we know for sure there are not going to be any gremlins to work out with the new one, shouldn't take long as she puts between 500-600 miles a week on her car. I can't believe how much more power this thing has compared to the 03. This thing has quite a lot more cab space than the 03 as well, seats are wider and more comfy plus heated leather which my wife is already loving the feel of. Not sure if all saw the previous th…

My girlfriend has a 2011 Subaru Outback with the CVT, and it just passed 60,000 miles. According to the manual, this is a service free unit and the fluid does not need to be drained and refilled...BS. Should I drain and refill with Subaru CVT fluid or trust the manual? The dealer also said the tranny fluid was lifetime about my dad's Saturn Outlook and when the tranny started slipping at 140,000 miles with the original fluid, I drained it and it was black!

Hello everyone. I recently took a step up into an outside sales position in the company I work for. My work truck is a 2010 Isuzu NPR diesel truck. It does have the bigger 5.2 liter motor and it runs pretty good. I have the opportunity to purchase some things for it to "fit my needs better" according to my company. My question is, does anyone have any idea of good performance upgrades that I should do while I have the chance? Does anyone make a chip/tuner or anything for the Isuzus? Thanks for everything!

I am a big fan of bang for your Buck. I'm becoming a real estate broker. Been working in real estate for a long time as an investor. I'm interested in working with investors and possibly self directed IRA's to fund transactions and diversify investments away from the stock market. Home prices fluctuate, but rent prices has been stable and increasing. Plus I can manage property for customers that I sell to. A lot of people don't like that side of real estate. Anyway, I am not going to become a big shot when the market is strong. We have most everything we need. But I love a good value and comfort in a vehicle. Unless I'm missing something, the 90's Mercedes diesels ar…

I've got a friend that brought me his car and it was vibrating horrid. Just off idle it would vibrate really bad. He did some digging and found a video on setting counter balance shafts. So comes back with the car today and ask me to do the work for him. All I got to say is it fixed the problem and moderately difficult to do but if your patient you'll get through it. I also thanked the author of the video for showing this...

I am going to be looking for a high mileage vehicle. I'm a big guy, so nothing super small. But do you guys have a recommendation for a high mileage diesel? Something pushing 50 mpg that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I asked before about the Passat B4's. Still on my mind as they are roomy and simple to work on.

Wife and I have both always wanted a convertible of some sort and we both saw a Nissan Murano Cross Cabriolet earlier this summer and both liked it. I have been looking into them and they have only been made for 4 years and 2014 is the end of the line for them for lack of sales. It is a two door coupe all wheel drive convertible crossover SUV vehicle. I have read reviews on them and older folks like them even though they are a 2 door they have a lot of back seat room and is easy to get in and out of. They are pretty much loaded with all options as they are a higher end car to start with, the only downfall is that mileage sucks at only 18-23 since it has a big 3.5 V-6 and…

Hey guys, my son's car (06 Jetta TDI) has all the sudden lost power and I found out that cruise quit at the same time. I have VCDS and pulled an EGR code and an O2 sensor code. I pulled the EGR valve and cleaned it then put it back on. I get screwy readings on what it is doing. Most times at idle it will say 100.6% duty and other times it will say 15% duty. I checked the boost and the actuator comes up with the correct numbers. I blocked off the EGR for testing and it didn't seem to make much of a difference except now there were no engine codes. I should tell you that the fuel filter was changed a week ago. I tok it for a test drive and it would barely get out of its own…

Anyone familiar with the B4 Volkswagen? Made at the Audi plant and like a Passat on steroids and gets 50 mpg. There is a guy in Bellingham Washington who is restoring to your pleasure. New paint, interior, motor, drive axle, suspension and brakes all new. You can get one for around $12k. Biggest VW ever made and will go 100 mph @ 3,500 RPM's. I think they are all stick shift too. Range 1,000 to 1,200 miles on 25 gallon tank. Supposed to run on bio diesel too. We are thinking of driving up and discussing a build. Only 650 imported to USA in 96,97.

I lost my good key and the one I have the remote doesn't work. For a while it'd lock the doors and open the trunk but wouldn't unlock the doors. Now it does nothing and a new battery doesn't help. Is there something I can try yet or do I just need to get a new one?

We are looking to buy a high mileage vehicle. But not a sardine can, as my wife and I are not small people. We are thinking of a Passat or Jetta TDI. We do not generally buy new. But rather a few years old. Are there better years to look at? What to watch for? Are the automatics reliable or better going with sick shift? We would be paying cash and most likely private party. Do any of you have real life fuel mileage experience with these cars?
