My trans dip stick pops up a little, I shove it back down and 3 or 4 tanks worth of fuel later the dip stick has poped backed out maybe half inch.  Dont know what's causing it, vibration or pressure from venting is pushing it back out.  Been doing this for long time.

 

  Any ideas what's going on?

 

and if normal is it ok to put something on it to hold down to keep dust out?

 

Do you have this problem?

 Are other vent holes maybe  plugged and creating more venting out of dip stick hole?

Correction

I don’t see why you couldn’t use a pice if gorilla tape or something else to hold it down? I don’t have an auto trans so I can’t help anywhere else. Do you dhave I’ve much bumpy roads? Maybe worn out o ring around dipstick head?

I’m not sure but seems like most trans dipsticks do? 

I'll have to look at mine,,, IIRC it is a black rubber plug with a vent under the metal cap

Mine has a rubber bushing at the top under the little metal cap the handle's attached to, but mine bounces out about a quarter inch soon as you push it in and want it to stay there it pops right back. At least the cap covers the fill tube mostly. It would be nice if it fit proper. Almost like the dip stick is too long and the bushing shrank.

Mine has metal bushing at top also.  Looks like a upside down bottle cap sortof?   Wonder if anything supposed to be inside the cap?  

My 1998.5 tranny dipstick does the exact same thing. Push it in to place. As soon as you let go it pops about an 1" back out. Oh well. Been that way for 20 years I suppose.

Yes inside the cap is a rubber bushing/ sleeved onto the dipstick and pushed up inside the cap. It seems that it shrank and won't hold snug to the tube any longer.

It wood be nice if it fit correctly, but I'm wondering if its designed to vent thru the tube instead.

You could purchase a new dipstick from Genos and see what happens? I have a NV5600 so I'm just trying to help I don't have any experience here.

Maybe Dynamic trans will see post and chime in.  He always has good info.

I wouldn't be concerned been coming up for long time.  And I think be exhaust brake install directions say in effect dip stick tube needs to be "modified".  In other words bend it out of the way.  

  But I'm thinking dust could get inside.  Not so much when driving if trans is pushing positive pressure up tube but when sitting.  I'm guessing maybe another vent that might be plugged, creating more pressure thru dip stick tube.  But I dont see one and i know very little about trans.

Must be only a 47RE issue.

 

My 46RE in my 1996 Dodge 1500 doesn't have this issue. I'm pretty sure there is a vent hole in the dipstick tube somewhere near the top. 

I put electrical tape on the tube to make it thicker so the dipstick has a harder time riding up

My trans doesn't have this problem.   It could be that your transmission vent is plugged up.  When the transmission heats up the air expands and pushes the dip stick out.

I ground the tip off mine so it no longer did that.  Seemed to hit bottom of pan.  I have a deeper one now so can't tell if that would have stopped it or not.

The dipstick hits a shelf in the pan right under where the dipstick come into the case. For some reason Chrysler either used a dipstick that is too long (or a tube that is too short) in the 2nd Gen trucks. The 3rd Gens do not do this. A deep pan will fix it, or grind a little off of the end like Russ did. Keep in mind that the lower your dipstick sits in the pan, the less fluid you will have when it reads "FULL".
