Hi,

I want install Isspro pyrometer gauge. Lots of well meant advise on YouTube etc., with some contradiction.

Questions  I have concerning probe placement are:

1) Which is it, the left or right side of the collector, and where?  Halfway up, the middle, or top.

2) Do I Drill and Tap in place, or remove Turbo first.  Despite the Dollar Store magnet cleanings I’ve watched,

doing it in place has me looking up the cost of a replacement Turbo.  Of course, removing the Turbo first will have its own challenges given age of fasteners.

Any advice or experiences would be appreciated.

Thanks

Leaky

I drilled with the truck running.  Used axle grease on the bit to help make the chips stick.  Drilled in small increments.

I tapped it the same way.  Grease on the tap with frequent cleaning while the truck was running.

I have a modular exhaust manifold now that was pre-drilled and tapped...but way back in the day I drilled and tapped my stock manifold successfully.  I drilled and tapped the back pipe of the collector.  I just found the fattest part of the back pipe of the collector in between the turbo flange and the beginning of the collector and drilled there.

The drilling process was done with the engine idling the entire time so that shavings would be blown outward.  I started with a center punch and a very small pilot (1/16-3/32), then increased by a 1/16" until I reached the desired size.  This kept the shavings small and light so they were easily blown out by the exhaust pressure.  I did not use any grease cuz I wanted the shavings to fly instead of stick.  Also did not remove the turbo or anything else.

Then I followed it up with a tap, again with the engine idling for the same reason.  After tapped I shut the engine down, and taped my fitting and screwed it in snugly.  Good to go.

That's an excellent guide to go by.  I wish I would have had this way back in the day.

I was lucky, the turbo was off and I just stuck a rag in the manifold and pulled it out when done.

On a different note i removed my turbo for the first time in 14 years during the HG replacement and all the bolts came loose with no problem. Even the exhaust manifold bolts came out the same way and they are near 18 years without turnimg.

I drilled mine the first time (for gauges) where @015point9 showed.  I did it with engine off and used magnet and vacuum to clean up afterwards.  I drilled the second hole (for Adrenaline EGT probe) across from the first one again with engine off and using magnet and vacuum.  So far so good although I do have a large variation between the 2 but I'm sure it's because of the crappy Glowshift gauge

I've done 3 trucks now had all three running while drilling and tapping. No problems

I've stacked both the ISSPro and the Quadzilla exhaust pyrometer probes on the rear runner.

Readings the same?

I've wondered just how to see if my gauge is accurate. My cheapy IR gun tops out at 999

Did you install both with manifold and Turbo intact?

Yes. Never removed the turbo. Drill both holes and tapped with everything assembled. Greased my drill bit and the tap. Then used a Q-tip to pick up any metal that might of fallen through. A Q-Tip will snag any metal chips just by touching.

Question concerning “Shielded” Blue Feed cable on Isspro R17021Pyrometer.

I have about 18” of excess cable sticking out of meter pod hole.

Can this be cut with no effect on accuracy of gauge readings?

I dont think I'd cut it. I have about that much excess to.

Thanks.

Was curious because instruction read “Trim the sensor harness wires to length to allow the gauge to pulled back from pod or mounting location without disconnecting the connector.” Made sense to me. But while looking at other installs on “wonder-net”, people coiled the excess up.  One article claimed the ohmic value of the Lead Wire was critical, and the length should not be altered.  Isspro appears to be reputable product.  Another case of TMI. :)

I also coiled up the excess rather than cutting for fear of the same.
