The consensus seems to be using Delo, Valvoline Premium Blue or Amsoil Synthetic for engine oil. I personally think they are all equal at over 20F. From 0-20F you start to see a little difference between the first 2 and the amsoil since those aren't synthetic. If your engine has to start in weather under 0F a lot, I would really consider synthetic oil.Oil filters seem to be the cummins brand fleetguards or stratapore. There are some other brands out there that are good. Fuel filters, I just use the NAPA Wix ones but maybe someone has more input on that.

I run a variety of oils, usually what I find on sale. My latest sale score is 12 cases of Valvoline Premium Blue the O'Rielly's had on sale recently. I used to use the Fleetguard Stratapore filters. They are great filters but cost about triple what a Baldwind filter costs when you buy them by the case. Baldwins makes great filters as well but at a MUCH lower cost.

Nice article guess I liked the analysis on the oils (and that DELO and ValvBlue came out on top ) as well as his analysis on 3000,6000,10000,20000 miles oil changes. nice stuff

I've been using Wally World oil and a NAPA gold filter. There are some oil filters which will not hold up the the oil psi put out by engine. they could burst and cause real problems. I use a strap wrench to remove and tighten the filter.

HOW ABOUT MY 6.7-LITER ENGINE….

If you have a 6.7-liter ’07.5 Turbo Diesel truck it is recommended

that you use a CJ-4 lube oil. Why? Again, issue 54’s article has the

reason behind CJ-4 oils.

“The EPA tightened their exhaust emissions thumbscrew on diesel

engines starting January 1, 2007, to reduce particulate matter

(PM) and oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) emissions. To meet these

requirements most diesel engine manufacturers are resorting to

the use of diesel particulate fi lters (DPFs). A DPF differs from the

catalytic converters we have used for years on gasoline engines in

that a DPF actually fi lters the entire diesel exhaust stream.

“On the surface you wouldn’t think this would be a big deal—

Europeans have been using DPFs for years. The difference is that

Europeans don’t accumulate mileage like Americans and they will

tolerate much more frequent service intervals. Our EPA has decreed

that the new DPFs must go 150,000 miles before needing removal

for cleaning. This means the soot collected in the DPF must be

burned off in the exhaust system frequently if trap life is to exceed

150,000 miles without removal and cleaning.

“I don’t have to tell you that diesel exhaust is relatively dirty.

It consists of lots of soot (that’s what turns your oil black) and

unburned residues from both the fuel and the oil. Sulfur in the

fuel can signifi cantly hamper DPF performance. That’s why ultra

low sulfur diesel (ULSD) fuel was introduced in the fall of 2006.

Phosphorus and sulfur in the lube oil can shorten DPF cleaning

intervals considerably. Phosphorus (P) can ‘glaze over’ and plug

the tiny holes in the DPF, making the openings effectively smaller

and quicker to plug. Sulfur can ‘mask’ the DPF, making it temporarily

less effective. Sulfated Ash (SA) in the lube is thought to build up

deposits on the DPF over time. These deposits that originate from

diesel fuel and lube oil then make the DPF effectively smaller and

quicker to plug.”

I use fleetguard filters and Rotella T Full Synthetic oil...works good for me and is rated up to around 10k miles with this filter setup I believe.

Where do you get your oil filters from? Local store or web?

Okay, I'm confused...Is the Cummins Fleetguard filter the same as the Stratapore, or are they 2 different filters?Or, is the word "Stratapore" an upgrade?

Fleetguard makes 2 filters. The stratopore ones are LF3894. I get mine at Cummins. Geno's can mail you some too.

Hey guys I manage a NAPA and they have Premium Blue on sale untile march 31st for $9.99/gal and the extreme 5w40 for $19.99 as for filters the good NAPA gold #1607 is a great oil filter and #3585xe (extreme eficency) is a great fuel filter.

I bought some of this oil http://www.pennzoil.ca/#/motor-oil/pennzoil-platinum in the 5w-40 grade. Then I realized it is European formula so I'm wondering if there's any reason that I shouldn't use it in my cummins? I could use it in my Jetta but I'd have enough oil here for a life time:lol:
