Bought a Trailer
I saw 106* on my overhead today. Seems to be pretty close with my electronic weather gauge at home and the ones on the buildings around here. Still waaaayyyy, waaayyy to hot fer this guy.

My Tranny got HOT!
I could but if you are on hard surface and 4x not needed is not a real good idea. Worst place for me is my driveway which is paved but that same hill would be nice in 2x low. It is actually an old logging road that is gravel and I do use 4x high range at the toughest part. Last bit is slow enough I have to unlock the convertor but short enough distance not a problem.

My Tranny got HOT!
Lockup switch is needed for sure in that scenario but you need a modified valve body to be able to lock in first I believe. Mine can do that and I use it on a stretch of backroad with my toyhauler. The last 50 yards is so slow I can't lock it even with 4.10 gears though. Be bad trouble at black rock if it was a long pull like you are talking about but 50 yards or so no real problem. The answer to that would be low range but my '02 has solid front axle so not possible without locking hubs which I am thinking I will do eventually.

5.9 engine blocks, Killer Dowel pin a concern?
Not true. Dave Conrad (Fishin2Deep4U) posted the work slip from his Dad's '02 that had it fall out. Not as prevalent but still the possibility. This is not the repair slip which I could no longer find but some discussion about KDP/24 valves. http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/98-5-02-powertrain/380858-killer-dowel-pin-24valve.html

Going to Dynamic!!
Pretty sure mine is a Cascade too since I recall him mentioning they were built somewhere around here. I would not have minded a Georend though. Jon and Tony Garcin both recommended putting the sender in the pan. Both also said they were more interested in what temperature fluid the clutches are bathed in. I want to know the max temp the fluid gets to, especially now that apparently color is no longer an indicator of whether the fluid has been overheated. Mine is in the hot line but I used a trick aluminum round block that Isspro makes. Sender screws into it and then just clamp the whole deal on the hot line. It does lose some max temp but eventually I am going to wrap it with some of that black insulation you see in the plumbing department which I think should mitigate most of the difference.

Stealth plate torx bit
I lost mine in the dark underhood depths and never have found it. No one around here where I looked had one so I eventually took a sharp chisel and cut it right across the middle and was able to us a flat screwdriver and just unscrewed them. They were not very tight. Done this on 2 rigs and replaced the screws with allen head ones.

Torque Converter/Turbo size
You won't be unhappy.

Going to Dynamic!!
I have a deep pan and a temp gauge. I had the pan and gauge already. He used the Georend flex plate. Had trouble with welds on what he had been using and upgraded.

Torque Converter/Turbo size
I have had Jon build 2 trannies for me. The '01 has a slightly tighter stall with 3.54 gears than the '02 with 4.10 gears. The gears were not why Jon chose the tighter stall on the '01. He just felt a looser one would be better and what he now uses. I forget what the difference was but I am sure he can tell you. I think I would have liked the tighter convertor for my driving style but there was a year from the time the '01 got wrecked and the time I drove the '02 with upgraded tranny so it might be partly my imagination. This one seems a bit softer off the line (for me) and it definitely has a bit less pull coasting. I have a long straight to where I turn to our home road and I usually make a long coast to it. I know each spot I could kick cruise off and just make the turn almost without braking. And yes, some if the neighbors don't like that but they could pass if they wanted. How much the different gearing might have to do with this I don't really know. So I guess it is not a perfectly straight comparison but it's what I have. I still have the '01 sitting here but I darn sure am not going to swap converters so you can say I was pretty happy with both of them. I think Jon said he would have used a Goerend but didn't have or couldn't get one in my time frame. I think I would have liked that but I sure like what I have. Hope this is helpful. BTW, Jon and his family are REALLY nice people too!

Going to Dynamic!!
Thanks but it is a wild winter steelhead. It was released to go make more. =) I see I need to update my rig!

Going to Dynamic!!
I'm with Mike. Not too many miles yet on this one but I towed my toyhauler to OR coast and back this week and performed flawlessly. GVW a bit over 17,000 and had the Comp on 5x5. Would bury the pyro so could only use about half throttle. I did back it off to 3 but still wanted to run over 1,300* but I haven't J-hooked the turbo yet. You WILL be happy! RR

Shrader valve leaking
It is just a tire valve and what I have used with no issues.

Block heater temp
My scan gauge showed a temp of 123* on mine this AM.

Billet Flexplate and Washer
Glad I slid in under the wire on that!! =)

Thinking seriously about twins
That is the # Jon gives me. He just built one for my '02 a couple days ago. BTW, for Mike there are NO fingerprints to be found on the tranny case or any part thereof. =) =) Just thought you would wanna know. LOL

Exhaust
Not laid up for several weeks yet but I'll see what I can find on that page about probe placement when I end up there. I have couple other sources I can talk to since they are relatives. One just retired from PACCAR but worked many years for Cummins and was shop foreman for a few years at Cummins/Swan Island, PDX. Another one works for Freightliner and was shop foremen for a few years @ McCoy Freightliner/PDX. Maybe can get some good input from those fellas.

Exhaust
I know where every one usually puts it on their personal rigs. I do know of several big rigs that lost the pre turbo probe. Can't recall what all was damaged but it seems like it resulted in an overhaul. This has been a very long time ago. Maybe probes are higher quality now. I am going to be laid up for a while soon so I am going to try to find that page again.

Exhaust
I see this posted often. I drove class 8 trucks full time back in the late 60's/early 70's for about 4 years and part time up to now. Because I have been part time I get whatever rig is in the yard a lot when I worked for a rather large outfit. I have literally driven at least a couple hundred different tractors and likely more. When I started driving not all rigs had pyrometers and still don't even today. In the beginning every pyro was plumbed pre-turbo. For at least the last 25 years or so none of them are. Every one with a gauge is post turbo and the ones that are not at least have provision in the down pipe for it. Never have seen a place in the pre position on those rigs. There has to be a reason for that one would think. I neglected to bookmark it and now wish I had since I can no longer find it but I found a discussion about probe placement a few years back. I believe it was a Cummins factory site and they claimed under full throttle pull there was a very reliable 300* difference between the 2 positions. Main downside was the response with post position under pull lagged behind what was seen with the pre position. Just an FYI to let guys know what Cummins says about it. I think when I get around to doing mine I will run 2 probes and make comparisons.

Prayers Please for MoparMom
I'm even worse as I just now saw this. Glad to see and read things are better! Guess I need to check this part of the forums once in a while.

concensus of running EGT's
That took me back too. The first diesel I ever drove was a '52 White w/JT165 but no turbo. It was tandem axle solo rig so not that much weight but still pretty darn gutless. We were only allowed 73,280 when I started w/2,000 lb tolerance before they would cite you. 35 or 40 foot trailers and recently I pulled 40/22 combo @ 105,500 lbs. Interesting how things change including I only made a living for about 4 years driving. I wanted to drive and like doing it very part time which is what I have done for years when I was working my regular work. Not sure this will work to either show a picture or a URL. If it does it is the rig my brother drove since 2001 and put 1.4 million miles on it. It has been restored and headed for the Brooks, OR truck museum. I think they should put him permanently on display in the drivers seat with the rig. =) His last day in a rig will be 8/26.
