HOw to not change a turbo out in 18 hours
ok - heres the SHORT version. Was trading out my s-hx40 to a he351cw with a new(used) pdi manifold. Started Saturday 11am .... Finished Monday morning 10am. :banghead:First turbo and manifold off in around 2 hours. Bolted new manifold on - and then go to attach turbo - realize it has 4 threaded holes. Two of the threads on turbo are studs - so I * think* i need to drill out two of the holes. Try my hand12v drill - no dice. Find of a neighbor a power drill - and no dice. So I take the manifold and all gaskets back off - no dice. So after thinking for a while walk up to store and grab a manual cylinder/pick file. 2 hours of manual filing against hardened steel and small back motion to not damage my nice new manifold and I can get the studs through - end of day 1.Sunday get the manifold back on and load the turbo up. Threads on. I have to really TORQUE down the studs though to get flush to manifold. Go to think about my IC and oil - they are not aligned right - oh yeah I need to clock it. Oh wait - I can't get the turbo off the manifold as its SO tight now with the studs. Of with manifold and turbo together. Now on the ground - big snap ring - have some oreilly snapring pliers - they bust. Up to store and get an ACE pair. No good. Back to gas station and borrow some heav duty bent pliers - no good I can compress it but cant get it out. Call my neighbor and both of us with 4 screwdrivers pry it ou by force. This around 3 HOURS just on the snap ring. Clock everything and then try to get it back in. Cant. So get my neighbor back and with a bit of each others blood we get it back in with the original snap pliers. Manifold and gaskets and turbo all back on truck. Its now getting dark. Drain feed for turbo oil wont align - its just ever so slightly out - bed - Im beat.Monday morning 6am - I pull the drain tube - and cut off the bottom 1" where it joins block to shorten it. I bolt to turbo and reconnect to block - all good. Get everything tightened down as hard as I can as all gaskets have been on and off around 4-5 times ....... its now 9am. Start her up - I see oil/smoke comming from cartridge in center. hmm.Tighten everything up further .. seems to help a little and I drive it for 5 miles and pull over. Oil on back of turbo compressor - looks like its comming from CIRCLIP but hard to tell and smoke (burning oil). Halfway to work and not a lot of choice - everything else seems ok so drive to work. Pull over - no oil and no smoke. So who the herman knows ..... All I can say is glad thats over (for now). Will be monitoring IC and exahust for oil for next day or two before I get on it.to be continued .......

PDI exhause manifold fitment issue
See the thread I started here - saves reposting the pics http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/98-5-02-powertrain/441910-pdi-exhause-manifold-fitment-issue.html#post4555099 thoughts? thx --- Update to the previous post... man what a drama - cut it off and will remake a bracket later Then had the manifold back on but all 4 wholes are threaded - not like 2+2 with stocker. So 4 hours later its back off - 2 drills couldnt fix it and I had to manually file it - now its raining :banghead: Tomorrow back on - then the he351cw and some other pain

Air filters Pre-Filters
I got 1 .... It's ok ... For the cost I'd probably just by two filters and change 2x as often

Good idea - start a thread and we can start filling it out - unless someone can remember if we have one. Most of stuff is just parts/model/product info ARP - http://www.arp-bolts.com/ he351cw - its a turbo - cw stands for http://myholsetturbo.com/manuals/HE351CW.pdf VGT - variable geometry turbo - newer models - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variable_geometry_turbocharger

Steering box brace
Yeah did the FT gig for like 7 years. Now just do contract for last 2-3. Seems to suit me better - doesn't work out that much different to a FT - but at least if I do 60 hours I know I am getting paid - and if I do 40 then its a cruzy week. Seems to suit my mentality. Wife cant work tho - too hard in this economy. Else this would have all been in the truck last year - hahah . Now just getting to the point where I think do I sink another $10k into her over the next 3 years as my only "project" build ....... and keep her till she dies, or sell it after a coup[le of years when we head back to AUS (wife wants to - not me - go figure she is a MO girl).

Question about blocks
Warranty ? Man if you trust them and they will back up any issues - that seems like a good deal But cool - just curious

Question about blocks
There's a writeup with pics on cf. Unfortunately it can be stamped in diff places ... But it shows where withpics. Curious you said a full rebuild on new block was 4k Any details on what that included ? Thx

Trany Issue
Just a diff opinion:) doubt there is anything wrong with your tranny . My understanding is shifts are all controlled by changes in line pressure and solenoids in vb .... The bands help the physical shift of the clutches . The line pressure is also tied to you tps . So .... The tranny would have to be heavily glazed burnt clutches to slip and you would feel it. What your describing is a problem with the solenoids and or tps as they are interconnected If stock I would replace vb and check tps and cable If already upgraded vb I would pull it and clean or replace solenoids and check tps and cable 2cents ;)

Steering box brace
BRACE $120 for brace off ebay or http://www.dodgeramsteeringstabilizer.com/ LINKAGE http://oemmoparonline.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=78739 STEERING BOX W&F had a link to a guy who sold the steering boxes for like $200 also - name was Blue Top Steering or something http://www.bluetopsteeringgears.com/ --- Update to the previous post... Yeah I know what you mean. Let you in on a little secret. I hunt for deals on used stuff. I then install it and if I dont like it I sell it for little cost, sometimes for a small $$. That way I get to use/try stuff and determine if like it - and then sell if its not absolutely worth it. Somethings tho a little harder - like links/bushings - those will have to stay. You could probably by a steering brace new tho for $110 and sell it slightly used for $90 if it wasnt what you wanted. Ive gone through 3 turbos that way and actually will come out on top (not by much) by doing it that way. Same with some programmers and other stuff. Been working like a fiend lately - so that helps - hard to get "spare $$" for toyz/truck tho anytime

How does variable thickness affect compression - someone else mentioned that in another thread but I didn't bite - now I gotta ...... I thought it just sits between the head and block and has multiple passages for bolts, coolant etc ? Never done a head or seen under one hahah

fuel leak
Yeah I really liked the RV275 I had, believe it or not I now have 75+HP injectors and they still beat my stock injectors for mpg if I am in cruise on hwy - just not so much around town The RV275 ($250) and a used powerpuck for $80 should net you 2-3 mpg together Not bad for $330 .
-
Engine Noise
Didnt know thatAlways had assumed it was just the injection redesign with the higher rail pressure.
-
Truck took a dump !!! Now the fun begins!!
errr Id clear code and add 2 stroke oil and pray. If no serious downgrade in MPG and doesnt hardstart you might get lucky. sorry man

Hey man - yeah try this one after after a few beers ..... "where the fark is that fak" .... I have hx40 right now .... The he351cw is smaller and you require a flange adapter ... With that they are very close in length so almost direct fit .... You do have to modify the charge pipe as the intake is different Should have on in a week or so been sitting here for 2 months haha been busyGot some used arp 425 will check them out before I put on
