I could do it in 30min with the right tools...

A first timer taking his time and making sure everything is perfect - maybe 2 hours. Make sure you have the right tools though!

I can't find if @Mopar1973Man did an article on his turbo or not, but if you look through my thread (within the last 5-10 pages) I rebuilt an S400. They are not the same, but the basics are easy.

Would you guys ground the truck for now?  I have to go pick up a trailer about a 10hr drive away next week and I don't know if I'll have time to get to the turbo before that.  I will see how much a shop will charge for a rebuild, but if its a lot or they can't get to it soon, would you feel safe driving around for a while?

Personally, I would not drive it. Is it likely the seals will completely go out and it run away? No. 

I would try to get the seals in and rebuild it in time, or reschedule the trailer pickup.

Also whatever air filter you running you need toss that one away and get a BHAF.

What is so important about the BHAF?

 

 I know the factory air box distorts and may loosen it's hold on the factory rubber gasket over time which lets in dust but I figured out how to mod the air box to make a good seal.

Because for the same price of a factory panel filter it will go way farther distance and time over a stock OEM panel filter. BHAF has way less restriction like the stock air filter box. So why bother with a stock air box filter that possibly leaks dust, is replaced with a low-quality washable filter, still a restrictive box, etc.

 

Just looking at the OP picture you can see the dust settled in the leaking oil so you know the filter is not keeping up and the piston rings and cylinder walls are taking a beating.

So your sayin, dirt finds it's way around because of inadequate size.

 

It's amazing how much of a big deal it is to get your turbo rebuilt by this one shop here in town. Just for my first gen (now sold) they said it had to be shipped to the Midwest somewhere and cost around $1250 and takes a week or so to get it back. Yeah right :thumbup2:.. Found a local rebuilder for $362 and took couple days. I put it back in and hadn't heard it run so smooth in a lot of years.

Nxt time I'll have that shop do another for me since I'm getting older as I've heard it can be a dangerous thing if you get one thing wrong.

Filter and air box get to be too small as we gain more power so the box starts to distort and creates dust leaks. Stock powered truck is fine for the stock box but eventually, it will still leak dust too. Mine started back at 60k miles before I even had Edge Comp or Injectors. Pull my stock airbox out and replaced with BHAF. The first filter lasted about 135k miles and 7 years.

 

Here is the all time worse filter to own...

So I'm weighing my options right now.  I really need to go pick up this trailer next week.  I've talked to a couple mechanics I know,  They both don't seem concerned about imminent failure.  I don't think I can get the rebuild kit mailed out to me in time, and have time to install it before I go.  I'm also worried about parts being seized and doing all that for nothing.  Still considering it.  What I"m leaning towards is:

 

BD upgraded HX35 for $1500ish.  Its a performance upgrade, which I was hoping to do in the future anyways, I'm just not sure if its enough of a performance upgrade.  I'm not looking for crazy power, probably just 50hp injectors and enough turbo to keep things cool and make towing a little easier.  Not sure what it puts out for boost.

 

Other option is a reman turbo from ADP turbos which I haven't heard much about.  Parts store says they are good.  $800 and *SHOULD* be here before I go.  Simple swap in and out.  But could potentially be money spent that would be replaced in a couple years on an upgrade.

 

Would you guys feel okay going on a trip to pick up a trailer with it as is (new air filter in obviously) and get the upgrade, or is this like a do not fly situation...

 

FYI all prices are in Canadian Pesos.

What mods do you have?  The Hx35 can handle a good bit of fuel over stock before it starts to get puched out of it's map.  

 

I would just rebuild the current turbo and call it a day.  The Hx35 can easily handle ~325 hp worth of fuel.
