Silencer Ring or Not

Recommended Posts

I still have the Silencer Ring installed and I know a lot of folks run the Silencer Ring MIA. Understanding there really isnt any performance gain why do folks run it MIA? Just purely for the whistle? How loud is it? Any long term impact by running ring MIA?Thanks in advance

Whistle...

Just purely for the whistle?

Yeap...

How loud is it?

Not to bad with a BHAF loud enough that you know your spooling up...

Any long term impact by running ring MIA?

Well I'm at 158K miles and pulled mine out at 50K miles... I'm pulling 25.3 MPG max MPG and 21-22 MPG avg MPG...

Thanks in advance

before i removed the factory box for the bhaf, i wouldn't hear the turbo until ~2400-2600rpms. after i could hear it at 1650~1750rpms. i took my ring off about 1500m ago. if its quiet outside(i work at night) i can hear i pick up just above idle. during the day you can't hear it below 1200rpms. it is worth mentioning that i have stock exhaust and sound system. the radio easily drowns it out.

I like my Cummins quiet. I spent a full day and $300+ in materials to quiet down my truck cab. Made a good difference. There is no way to silence these motors but it does make phone calls easier.

It sounds wicked awesome.... Just a little reminder that there is a pressurized fan spinning at an insane RPM just up front.... :woot:

I am guessing that your never planning a aftermarket turbo install then...... Because if you like quiet then you'll never handlle the sweet sound of a S300 framed charger singing at full song........Andy

I'm running stock box, ring still in... with the big exhaust & straight through muffler... this truck is not quiet! I'm not into blasting audio so I can hear the turbo as soon as it kicks in... until the exhaust rumble drowns it out.Russ

I'm considering taking out the silencer. I like hearing the turbo build boost, but will I hear a whistle while cruising?- low speed? highway speed?

Is it hard to take the ring out, or hard to re install?

2 flat heads got mine out really quick. i had mine out until i took the muffler off. it was okay for daytime, but working nights...you could hear me coming from over 1/2mile away. i would wake everyone up. i put it back in.(for now :) )

Take it out, see if you like it, put it back in if you don't. My turbo whistle never gets old and I wish it were 10x louder.

Yeah... I like mine out but that's me... I only really hear it up a grade, under a good size load, or 20+ psi, and next to a wall  If you don't like it, put it back... it is not hard with a flat heat to take out, and not hard to put it in either.

I wonder of there's a difference between the the HX, and HY's. I have the HX, and like several other posters here, barely notice a difference, certainly not enough to become annoying on extended trips. Others here seem to notice a huge difference and/or find it enough to be annoying. Maybe i just got used to it from my OTR days.

What might be the big difference is the air filter steup... Stock airbox will muffle the noise really good... But a BHAF will allow the turbo whistle to come through really good...

Yeah and my AFE is the same way. Another thing i noticed was when i had the silencer ring out and not straight pipe it was not as noticeable but once I straight piped it It was like jet taking off :thumbup2:

I have had mine out for a couple years now. Its just loud enough to hear sing, but not annoying, even at 30psi towing. It got a bit louder when I ditched the factory tq tube for a Airaid MIT. I think the 3rd gen air box location and design are just quieter.
