2nd Generation Dodge 24 Valve Powertrain

This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

Well, at risk of being run down by truckers for past tank of fuel, I tolerated 55 mph to/from work (60 miles each way, altitude gain/loss 2000 feet from Flagstaff to Winslow and back), and resulted in 25.68 mpg hand calculated. Scan Gauge II was giving me 26.4.

  2. Well gang... I've been playing with theories and ideas for long enough now its time to put them into a design and see if it actually works. We all know the 24V's seem to take a good tumble in MPG's as the winter sets in well ISX proved that with the 12V engines with static timing that MPG's don't change. Well if you look at it the only thing that could be tossing this out the window is the IAT sensor on the 24V is changing the VP44 performance. Most know that colder air produces better HP/TQ because colder air is denser and requires more fuel to keep balanced. Well if you reverse this and warm the air (in theory) the VP44 should retune and burn according to the manifold t…

Well I gone and added the 4th switch to my setup. It didn't take long at all to daisy chain in the 3rd switch to the IAT and make it functional. No longer have to play with rheostat's or stuffing the IAT plug with wires. I'll get my video up here really quick.

I've done some research about adding a resistor to to the IAT connector as an MPG fooler. Is this an acceptable method? I wonder if it can affect anything in the engine when the outside temps are cold and the IAT is set at 143 degrees. After thinking about it for a while, I bet an arduino could be used to ramp up the IAT while monitoring the ECT. That could be an easy thing to do with a few relays and different resistors used to change the IAT. Say when you start the truck and it's cold out, a relay could close and send the actual IAT temp out. As the truck warms up, other relays could open/close and send out different resistor values. Any tho…

Ok I changed my injectors a few years back thinking they were causing my surging problem when towing. I think it ended up being alternator with excessive ac noise. The injectors I had were 8 holes and said bosh on them, I didn't know any better thinking they were stock I got a set from DAP that are 60hp thinking I'll be gaining some hp and mpg, And actually lost hp and mpg. And when talking to DAP they said that my injectors were not factory and couldn't use them as core so it costed me another $150, and I asked for my old injectors back and instead of my old ones they sent me another set of theirs that were new and said 75hp on the bag. So I guess I got another set of in…

Hey guys, So with moving lately I've had the chance to make more long trips with my truck, and also done a good bit of lower speed back road driving. Also done a good bit of trailer towing lately. Some empty car trailer, some loaded car trailer with a tractor like in my thread about first time towing, and some loaded 6x12 enclosed trailer. Nothing too heavy, I would say 8k max and around 3k average. Anyway I've been noticing my average MPG numbers with all this driving and they aren't where I'd like them to be. Unloaded on the highway doing 65 mph with 3:54 rear, best incan get with the edge is a little under 19. With the smarty I used to have I could almost hit 22! …

Just made a little jaunt with the CTD, about 300 miles each way near all highway. Note: I have stock rubber & 4:10 gears as in my signature. (IMHO, 4:10 ratio is too low unless you're going to put big rubber on it, but I own it now.)At 65.... 2000 rpm... was getting 17.8-17.9. On the way back, I dropped the rpms to 1900 & speed to 60 & mpgs went up to 18.2 With my stock truck, the overhead has always been right on. These are running right foot on the pedal, trying to get mpgs... cruise control does not feather the crest of hills & gets a bit less mpgs in my truck. Russ

I am still running the OEM muffler on my '02. Just wondering when and if it should be replaced. It has logged 363,000 miles and has been in operation for over 20 years. It still seems to perform fine, but maybe it is one of those things that can slowly deteriorate internally and cause increasing back pressure without knowing it. Should I just keep running it or replace it as a maintenance item? Any thoughts? - John

Hey all, So lately I've been wanting to quite my truck down just a bit. I LOVE the sound, but I've had passengers more often lately and it gets a little annoying when trying to hold a conversation. Anyway I found a new MBRP 4" muffler on my local Craigslist for $40 and I made arrangements with the guy to buy it. He said you can see right through it but it does have some flappers or something inside. I'm concerned about my egts coming up some, but I figured for $40 what do I really have to loose? Anyway I was just curious if anyone has any good or bad experiences with MBRP mufflers that they would share with me(good or bad sound, higher egts)? Also, my truck has a ver…

Anyone running a resonator and muffler on there truck? Can you post a sound video both outside and inside the cab? I've been told Donaldson 40 inch M085421 or a M085171 then a 51 inch Donaldson M090544 or a M101182, then a 51 inch Nelson and even a Walker 21471. Anyone running one of these? I've even heard of the MBRP Quiet tone.

Going to head to a local muffler shop tomorrow to get either the muffler or resonator taken off my stock system. I assume it would be a better idea to delete the muffler and keep the resonator. I would appreciate some input on which to do and has anyone done this. I just want to get a little more sound out of my truck but not have too much in cab drone. A friend did both and the sound is nice. But the best part is the cost. They only charged him 80 bucks to do both plus a chrome tip. Can't even get a muffler delete pipe online for that price. Thanks in advance. L8tr D

I am interested and so is friend of mine who has 12 valve and tail pipe rusted off stock muffler. I am interested in a muffler that is not really loud, not really expensive, and flow's alot better then stock. Is there such a muffler out there? I don't care for the straight through with no muffler but am interested in what you guys run. Thanks Chris

Hello. I'm a first time poster, but have gleaned countless amounts of valuable info from this site. Thank you all. Now the Question. I'm adding edge juice w/ attitude as well as a pac brake to my truck. Both require to be plugged in to the obd2 port. (My truck is an auto trans) I have seen obd2 splitters on the web but don't know if the separate components will operate at the same time. Thanks for your input.

  19. Hi, just purchased a 2002 Ram 2500 Quadcab 2WD 5.9L 24v. Starts very easy, Idles perfect. Drove fine around town in New Orleans, on the road home on interstate, the issues started. Got to 60 mph easy, but getting to 70-75 was a struggle, and slow climb. Any acceleration above that was nil and unresponsive. IF you floor it, no response but blue/white smoke out back. Consistent slight blue smoke, per wife following in my 94 ram. Once I got it home, driving around town, good peppy response 0 to 30 mph, after 30 I notice the sluggish, occasional surge, but usually lugging drive with similarity to a miss in a gas engine. Got on interstate, could'nt get above 55, missin…
