Starting this thread to help troubleshoot and document a host of problems with my father's "new" truck a 2001 24v 3500 dually with a 6 speed. Problems Truck will start and idle fine but will surge/buck inconsistently with throttle/load Codes p 1475 p0522 p0122 p 1295 p 0237 p 1488 and the companion code. Alternator ac noise seamed good <.03 No wait to start light but truck has a grid heater delete block on it not shure if it was installed "correctly" Probably is ecu but I'm going to check out the 5v system just to check. I did notice temp sensor was spliced thinking wires might be swapped? Grounding out the circuit Truck seamed to behave b…

I’ve got a friends 2001 Ram 2500 that run rough, dies and doesn’t restart but this is intermittent. It will run fine for miles before it starts acting up. There was no check engine light but I checked for codes anyway and it had a P0320. I graphed the injector pump timing with my scan tool and the timing showed to be all over the place. Truck has 179,000 on it, original injector pump but has direct replacement FASS fuel pump on it. It also has the original crankshaft sensor. Questioning whether it’s the injection pump or the crankshaft sensor. Any ideas are appreciated. Thank You.

2001 3500, manual A few months ago, 'no bus' showed up on my gauge cluster, and the gauges died. Truck started and ran fine, but no gauges after a few seconds past startup. Was driving it on short trips until it started stumbled and started getting loud fuel knock going down the road at 45. Brought it home, let it sit for a week. Next time I fired it up, it was smoking really good at idle, and cleared up when it was warm, but it's down on power pretty good once warm. Codes pulled at this point are: P0237, P0234, P1698, P0216 I reset the codes and only P0216 and P1698 came back. Gauge codes are 920, 921, 940 ,950, 999 …

Hey there, im in desperate need of figuring out ecm/pcm problems. I own 2000 automatic 4wd truck, a mechanic said the original ecm was bad so he sourced an ecm p/n 3947912(2002?) truck would start and run but rpm would cut out after 5 seconds of run time.(im aware newer years didn’t have a crank sensor). Fast forward i bought a 2000 donor truck with a manual transmission , I removed the ecm/pcm and all wiring harnesses under the hood and swapped them to my truck(one thing i noticed on the donor truck was it has a crank sensor by the starter but nothing was plugged into it and there was no pigtail in the harness) so i swapped all mentioned above into my truck and I’m still…

This is a tech article regarding those who (like me) think the oem spot for the apps is not ideal. Exposed to outside elements, heat, vibration and potential corrosion, moving it inside was most practical. Non Dodge/ midrange applications of Cummins 5.9 24V ISB’s all have their TPS/APPS inside the cab, mounted on the pedal assembly. So nothing is changing on the apps operation, just moving it. This mod does not works on trucks that are auto/use vacuum for cruise. The auto trans kickdown cable is attached to the bellcrank assembly. As with the vacuum solenoid setup too so if you can live without them then it will work. Parts …

Maybe some of you gents can help me now? Truck starting getting some bumpy rpms this afternoon. Drove it a bit and now it’s limping along with erratic idle. CEL on now. Codes I have: p0606 p0113 p0118 p0121 p0123 I read an article from here with someone with the same issues/codes and it was an ecm failure. I have the WT mods done, batts are clean & tight. I’m sitting on the side of the road right now so I thought id drop this topic. Any recommend ecm rebuilders?! Thoughts?

Hi guys. New here. Been around these things for a long time, but don't know Cummins like you guys do. I come from the rockcrawling world, and know a lot about LS stuff, and worked on lots of different diesels over the years, but not lots of cummins stuff beyond 12v. I need some help. Have a few issues on this cobbled together hooptie. Bought this truck as a tow rig, as my Bil's buggy will fit on the rear and it can tow my crawler behind it. Supposedly it was running and driving and then wouldn't start one morning. Tried and tried to get it but couldn't. Had some "diesel mechanic" diagnose it as a bad VP44 due to codes etc. Removed it and then he couldnt affo…

Patient: the truck in my signature. I had high boost readings on my Quad (up to 50 psi at idle) and those numbers dropped about 10 psi with the install of a new DAP map sensor. I then removed the Quad unit and sent just module to DAP to be checked out. While I had the Quad being checked, I installed my old Edge EZ. The module didn't have any issues so they sent it back to me and I have not reinstalled it. With the EZ, I get an almost constant "high boost " error code even after replacing the map sensor a second time. I was able to keep the light off long enough to get a smog check done but I now want to sell the truck and I need to figure out this error code issue. Can an…

Does anyone know of any issues with removing 5th gear from an NV4500 and driving long distance without it? My wife and I are in Fort Myers, FL visiting family. A couple days ago we we on our way to Tampa and I lost 5th gear. We were about 70 miles from where we're staying, so I made sure the other gears sounded normal and we turned around and headed back to Fort Myers. Seeing as we're about 1100 miles from home, and planning on heading back to Ohio in two weeks, I'm trying to weigh my options on the best way to proceed. I'm thinking that I can just take out 5th gear (and the nut), put everything back together, and deal with the repair w…

A while back I posted some concerns about how long an OEM muffler would last on the OEM exhaust system. I was mainly concerned if back pressure could be an issue as the muffler aged. I never really did get a definitive answer, probably because most people had moved up to 4" and 5" exhaust systems from the turbo back with either an aftermarket muffler, or no muffler at all. So, I decided to do a little research on my own. I found a general statement that indicates Cummins does not want to see any exhaust back pressure above 3 psi. I connected a gauge to the 1/8" port on the exhaust elbow and strapped the gauge onto my windshield wipers and then went on a …

When my truck is plugged in and has sat all weekend, it will fire right up. I went to leave work today, the wts light ran for a normal amount of time but the truck fired for a second and died. It did that 3 times, the 4th time it fired up and ran a tad rough for a moment and then smoothed right out. I figured if I was losing fuel prime it would do that all the time, especially when sitting for extended periods.

Coming into Rainier this morning the truck wouldn't idle down and I was heading for Castle Rock and then the truck hiccuped and backfired at exit 46 so I turned around to head home and now it went into complete limp mode only partial throttle and then now no throttle and the code is saying ECM failure. I disconnected my adrenaline and tried running the truck and it has the same code and it still has no throttle. Now I'm stuck by tractor supply in kelso waiting for AAA to take me home. I just had a local shop in Scappoose install a rebuilt engine about 500 miles ago and I'm sure there's is a total coincidence that this is happening now but it's just one thing after anothe…

20 years ago or how ever long ago, long time. I started running 2 stroke oil after reading Michael's research and never looked back. I keep hearing this Archoil lubricant and wanted to see if there was any talk about it. I cant seem to find the write up on it from years ago. So Im here picking brains on the subject. What do y'all know?

I am in the throes of replacing the crank seal, tappet cover gasket, radiator, and intercooler. With the good access, and since I plan to keep this truck, I figured I'd replace the battery cables. No real issue just tired of the corrosion and poor stock terminals. I ordered a nice pair from K Suspension but the install instructions leave a lot to be desired. Information is limited from other sources, anyone every tackled this job? One part that seems daunting is the many sensors that share the wire loom with the power cable going to the starter. Getting that apart and keeping it all straight must be a challenge. Any advice is appreciated. 2001 2500 Quad Cab …

2001 ram 3500.. edge comp/smarty .. So been having a problem with a stutter under throttle .. 3/4 ish throttle.. I re adjusted the factory made no difference and tps% was reading 8% at idle 77% wide open .. I ordered a timbo which I think is a rip off but anyways.. installed it now it want read below 13% throttle at idle .. I removed it from bell crank to make sure and still 13%.. so I installed it and when I did the adjustment procedure.. I had to move the idle screw in all way to the bottom to get it to move and now my throttle is around 1/2 way.. yes its int the range it called for 580-700 its at .666 and I moved till it voltage came up and then turned back to vol…
