2nd Generation Dodge 24 Valve Powertrain

This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

  1. Help!!!! Traveling cross country with truck and car on trailer. Trying to limp home 1500 miles with a badly leaking tappet cover (1 gallon oil leaks out per 200 miles!) Pulled in to get fuel. Went to start truck, heard click then nothing! All lights, dash lights, windows, cabin lights, etc. DEAD! Checked batteries, terminal connections, grounds, fuses, etc. all seemed good. Removed terminals from batteries and reinstalled them. Heard door open alarm so turned key to run. and had dash lights, windows etc. Tried to start, heard click again then nothing. Lost all dash and interior lights, windows, etc. again. Waited a few minutes and dash, interior lights reappeare…

  2. Truck runs smooth as glass, good fuel pressure at 19, 15wot, 65k miles and got trouble codes 1693 and 230. What's with that everyone? I'll clear the codes and report back. Thanks for any help. Update; I checked the code list and it does not mean a bad vp. 230 means incorrect lift pump voltage from the ecm. I'm hoping it's just dirty battery connections. Now cleaning all battery terminals, checked lift pump connections and batteries still unhooked with headlight switch on to get rid of residual electricity in the system. Hope I'm on the right track here. --- Update to the previous post... I hooked everything all back up and still got code 230. …

I've got this goofy situation going on and was hoping y'all could check my thinking. I'm working on a friends truck that started and died the other day. I get up there expecting to find a bad VP. Instead, I find there is no fuel getting to the lift pump. (Yes, it is a block mounted pump. 300k miles on it!) So I disconnect the suction line from the pump and blow into it. I can hear bubbles in the tank. Now, I pressurize the tank. Barely any fuel comes out. I reconnect all lines, bump the starter, and blow into the tank as the pump is running to force prime it. No go. Should I be looking at a partially plugged line? Or partially plugged basket?

Ok I'm really hoping I am not going to be in the market for an injection pump. Recently my truck started cutting out under moderate to heavy acceleration. Cruising at about 30% load on my quadzilla readout it seemed ok but if I got into it, it would run ok for a few seconds and slowly die down to 38%. Just before it quit running it would drop slowly until it got to about 10%. I stopped at a store and when I came out it wouldn't start. All through this the reading from the tps matched the reading on the quadzilla so I don't think it's dead pedal. After having it towed home and doing some digging I find I'm not getting fuel at the injectors. I have power at the vp plug, and…

Currently when I turn the key on it tells me there is no fuel the low fuel light comes on. It was just a few months ago I changed the sensor out in the tank. The volt gauge tends to start fine but later on drop to 8V even though my battery voltage is 14.2 to 14.5 volts still. Now I plan on verifying the fuel sender to see if I can measure any ohm resistance at the PCM if so them the sensor is fine by the PCM had failed. Volt gauge I really can't test no way being the voltage is sensed and the reported to the cluster over the CCD network. I might be calling @Auto Computer Specialist and talking to them on warranty call.

So I was driving around testing my new 7x.012 injectors and new quadzilla and my truck died. I tried restarting and it started right back up. Fuel pressure from my Fass seemed a little low (around 12 or or 13 psi) but otherwise everything seemed like it was working ok. I made a stop for about 20 min and when I got going again the truck died again 100 yards down the road and wouldn’t start. I noticed that the pump wasn’t cycling on key on/ starter bump so I had the truck towed back to my shop. When I tested the pump by putting 12v to it, it worked, so I replaced the relay with another but couldn’t get the pump to cycle. I then tested the ecm signal lead and I was only gett…

  7. So i replace my old style 3/8 fass system with a new airdog II-4g model due to no lift pump pressure and couldn't get system to prime and get rid of the air. Now even with the new system in, I go a few blocks down the road and my low fuel pressure light turns on and starts stumbling when going to a stop and sounds awful. What the ;lkjasdf;ljasd;lfkja is going on here? Im getting fed up...ive been so frustrated trying to figure this out the past couple months. I love cummins but this one is beating me up. And don't want to risk trying to drive it to a cummins shop. This is the greatest site ever btw.

Ole girl has been sitting for a good while. waiting for glow plugs to warm up I didn't hear fuel pump run. The FASS 150 has been flawless on the 01 dually over the years. 12.95V from battery across 30 to 87 on the relay but only 8.5V across 85 to 86 with ignition on. Ive never been good at diagnostics, seemed logical. power and ground from original carter pump. That 2 pin connector leads into large factory harness that's run along the block should have 12V right?

I have a 1998 3500 4X4 dually 24 valve fresh rebuild (3k miles) Industrial injection Hot Rod 44, Hamilton springs, 120 BD sticks, Air dog 150, Quadzilla , 5" exh. , Packbrake, DNE2 OD, NV4500, SB DD clutch, S&B intake & filter. Just installed Custom Airwerks turbo close to Silver Bullet in specs. Loaded trailer went from Boise to Portland and back and towed great. Only issue I had was too much black smoke for my liking at low end. by the time i got back the smoke was getting worse. Went through my injectors but no change ( easy to make all traffic vanish in my rear view mirror with pretty light to medium throttle . Decided that maybe turbo seals were leaking as ad…

My truck has another problem this week. HVAC is stuck on defrost, the vacuum pump produces vacuum, and all the hoses are connected. How much vacuum should I be seeing at the vacuum distribution plugs near the heater output? there is some oil leakage through the vacuum pump, so is this causing poor vacuum?

  11. Hi All I have searched high and low and didnt seem to find anyone with similar issue. Just bought a 2002 6 speed with an edge juice and fass ddrp lift pump rebuilt VP at some point. The issue is sitting overnight it looses prime between vp and injectors. Parked nose downhill so front bumper was a good 2 feet lower than rear. Same thing only low pressure fuel to #4. After muchhhh cranking dribbles at 1 and 3. It will eventually fire up like nothing happened no smoke. pulls hard on road absolutely no drive ability issues fp 13 at cruise on level 3 and 17-18psi idle. Tried unplugging lift pump to test for bad diaphragm and it still didn't start. Sits for 2-3 …

I have had this issue for around 6 months or so. I will start from the beginning... Rebuilt transmission 1 year ago. 5-6 months later no lock up. Tested alternator Cleaned grounds Monitored transmission via snap on scanner Wired in lock up switch Added noise isolator Tested continuity on lock up cable to PCM. Tested apps Changed VB Changed solenoids Changed OSS Tested brake light switch All came back good Trans doesn't slip TC when it was locking didnt slip at all TC would lock up only if coasting whilst feathering throttle around 5% tps input. it would…

  13. I'm having some issues with my 02. Lately I've had no low boost fueling. It's a 02 built auto with a edge comp and 50hp injectors. The fuel pressure is good and the only codes I'm getting are 0622 and 1765. You can feel the edge changing power levels, and there is little to no smoke at wot or wot from a stop. Also about a month ago everytime I drop it in gear it will stall unless I let it warm up for 10+ minutes. Any help would be much appreciate. Thank you.

  14. I got some pieces from Eric @ Vulcan and they worked out great. Anytime I open the fuel system I have to bleed the injectors and then have leaky connections for a few days. I got a ball valve and a few other parts to keep the pressure in the pump. Parts list part # 2: 1/2 push lock x 1/2 mnpt pom188 1: 1/8" mpt half union 31482 1: 1/4" sae cap 31992 1: 3/8" npt ball valve 06vlv 1: push lock T 1/2" aluminum plt8 He said a few parts werent listed on his site. I changed all my fuel line today and closed the valve off. When I got done I bumped the s…

My transmission (47re) was shifting hard for a little while, and then I lost overdrive. I replaced the filter and solenoids on the trans and the hard shifting stopped but I still don't have overdrive. I replaced the APPS sensor less than 10k ago. I have read on here about a band being to tight or lose, but I don't know what this band is or if its slang. Please help, and thanks for the time.

  18. I’ve been having hell with my ‘99, it’s a 2500 4x4 with an automatic trans. 130,000 miles all stock except for a few cosmetic things. One day out of the blue the trans went into limp mode, I hooked up my scan tool and I didn’t have any communication with the transmission. I started checking wiring harnesses and senors on the transmission. Found the output shaft speed sensor was bad so I replaced it and now the truck shifts 1-3 but has no O/D. It’s not my daily driver so I let it sit for a few days and came back to it when I had some time and I noticed it wasn’t charging the batteries and the A/C wasn’t working either. I wanted to verify that the it wasn’t each system fail…

  19. Hey Guys, I am fresh to the site - have dug around on some of the tests that can be provided, did those and after running thru that and replacing the MAP sensor we are still at a loss so I am reaching out to you guys for some help if you would....The truck is a 2001 Dually, 3500 4x4, has the HO engine in it with about 83,000 miles on it. Fuel system has a Raptor 150 Pump with a Draw straw and bigger lines to support more fuel not only to the filter, but past it and direct to the VP. I run a pressure gauge that reads pressure just previous to the VP to monitor the pressure right before the VP to keep an eye on lift pump pressure and filter condition. It's been holding st…

Good day, everyone, I am looking for direction on an issue with my 02 24 v. I lent it (mistake) guy put 80 litres of gas in it. It was only run a couple hundred yards to park and pay and then no start. I had it flat decked home and with no idea of gas did a few checks and figured a vp44 failure. I did not repair but decided to wait till this summer when camping season started back up. Fast forward (a few months), I bought reman vp44 and proceeded to remove old pump. In the process I discovered two things, the gas and the fact that the pump had been changed at some point. I believe by a local dealer that is notorious for changing warranty items without customer knowle…
