This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

    So I know there was a thread on this back in 2016 but reading into the document it looks like the guy who made the thread never really did the swap just stated what he thought needed to be done so bringin this back i have an 02 6 speed truck which unfortunately has snapped the crank ripping the main caps out and cracking the block, and me not knowing it was a headache to swap ended up snagging a 99 motor for it, well instead of loosin my you know what on trying to sell this damn thing and finding another has anyone done this successfully without it being a huge headache again i am trying to put a 98.5 24v in the 02 chassis, thanks again!

    I'm replacing my vp44, removed the old one without aligning the keyway to the 12 oclock position. Is it safe to bar the keyway into position without the vp44 installed? Like my profile says- unskilled (But eager to be instructed)

  3. Hello All, Over the years I have jumped around the different fueling boxes. I have uncovered my old edge comp box without the wiring harness. I can get a new harness for $150.00 from Edge but before I shell out $150.00 for the harness I would like to verify my box works. I called Edge and they told me that my box is too old, build date of 12/31/2002, and they no longer support testing of this box but can provide the wiring harness. If someone out there has a wiring harness that they can provide a wiring diagram so I can make my own, or if I could plug my box into someones truck and confirm it works before I shell out $150.00 to buy a new h…

    Having a new issue.. idling truck runs great very slight haze but nothing new.. take off down the road under low throttle it does great.. than between 20-50%ish throttle I begin to have white smoke pouring out.. under full throttle it’ll clear up to black.. I’m throwing no codes, turbo is rather new and have inspected behind filter and down pipe with no signs of oil.. injectors freshly pop tested, compression test recently has been done. Could injection pump be failing with no codes being thrown? Any other ideas?

    Hi everyone I hope someone can provide some advice. I have a 1998.5 3500 with a nv4500. It has an aftermarket lift pump, TST Comp, and ts mvp. The current issue has never happened before and I’ve owned the truck since 2017. Over the weekend my radiator sprang a leak. I noticed it when the check engine light came on and temp read ~240. I pulled over and shut it off. While replacing the rad I had two wires where the insulation wore off short. It was the “Cummins bus power” wires (see wiring diagram).     I've just come across a pair of exhaust brakes, just the actuators no controllers, from pictures and measurements they look to be 3 1/2" ID on a 4 1/2" V band both straight not angled Both are off of a Daf cf55 which has the 5.9 cummins fitted but the pre 24v, I'm assuming my downpipe is stock but have't measured it yet hope they are the correct size, bigger than stock I'll be ok, smaller than stock and I'll sell them on to the landrover/cummins conversion boys Whats the easiest way to operate one without spending huge amounts ?

    Does anyone know if there's a way to tell if an automatic trans has been rebuilt? I bought at 190K now at 244K with no problems so far except lately it has been slow to go into 4th at times.

    Hello everyone another New to me 98.5 day after I bought it odometer started blinking and no guages except for the tach. P1698… Checked for bus voltage at the dlc and have 2.45 without the truck running, I figured it was a pcm but I put it in my other 98 and it worked but the pcm out of the other truck didn’t work in this one. I checked the voltage of the 2 bus wires on C3 on the pcm and it seems they only show 0.9 volts? Truck charges and shifts fine just no guages. I also checked the C130 connector and my grounds going into the pcm. Any help would be appreciated thanks guys

    I think I'm finally ready to ask these questions. I have decided to upgrade my 24v with a quadzilla adrenaline, injectors, compound turbo, and an exhaust brake. I am not interested in rolling coal. I do not race but I do tow. I like reliability and longevity. My NV4500 has a 450hp clutch. And I'm installing a new lift pump and lines. I'd like suggestions on compound setup and which injectors to match them with. I initially planned to build my own setup but now I'm leaning to buying a kit. I feel like I want to be in that 350-425hp area. If possible I'd like to keep air filter in place (corner of passenger cowl) but it isnt a deal breaker. T…

    First I will share I have a new lift pump and TPPS and crank sensor. this truck has the modifyed relay installed a few years ago. Today I had time so I put a test light to the Red and Green wire key on power source for the FP relay and also powers the VP 44 pump as far as I understand. When the engine is cycling off the power to the red/green wire goes away. there are no codes present at this time Adding short video. I'll add its a 1999 2500 with auto Thanks for any help.

  12. It is getting hard to find non synthetic 2 stroke oil in the Houston area. Where are you finding "regular" 2 stroke oil? What bad things happen when synthetic 2 stroke oil is used?

    Hi this is my first time posting. I got a 01 quadcab cummins from my girlfriends grandfather that passed away . It has the h.o. motor and a 6 speed standard. Back in 08 he put a new motor in and had problems with the tach ever since. Now that i have the truck i had it idling with my scanner plugged in and the tach says its idling at 500 rpm. The scanner says 800 rpms. When the scanner is reading 3000 rpms the tach says 2000 rpms. Other than that it runs good . Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Also my redline on my tach is at 3000 rpm which is odd because every other cluster ive seen is around 3300-3400

    Been meaning to get to this mod for a while. My radiator is getting covered in oil and dust sticking to it so it was time. I followed @Mopar1973Man's write up on this for the most part. I did reuse the hose from the oem vent. I cut off the "J" part of it and used the piece that kind of jogs over a bit. It's a tight fit getting the pvc in it but it works. To paint the pvc I used rustoleum satin black implement/industrial paint. Dries to the touch in about 15 minutes and seems to cover and stick to the pvc pretty well. Thought I'd share a couple pics.

    Hello All, its time for another problem. I have an 01 2500 (DFI 7X009 injectors, DTT Trans with 89% converter, 3.55 gears, 265/70/17 Tires) and I recently removed my stock exhaust manifold and Hy35/9 turbo and AFE air filter and replaced it with an Insta-Spool Super 9 turbo, ATS 3 piece exhaust manifold and a Power Driven Diesel Dust Bowl air filter. After installing those items I took it for a test drive and all was good. Spooling was nice and had about 38 psi max boost and EGT's were higher than I thought they should be, 950-1000F at 65 MPH on flat ground no load.     Well after all the nice things I have done for my truck it died today. It has cut off on me maybe 6 times at idle over the past 3 weeks but always started right back and kept going. I gues she paying me back for ignoring her. My scan gauge said there were no codes. I did the key trick and got a P 1694 code. I hooked up a snap on solust to her and it read no codes. Thanks to @Haggar for that and I am going to bring back to you. I tried to connect with the PCM and it wont connect, then the ecm with the same results. Checked the codes again and nothing, no connection. Even reconnected the scan gauge and now it will not connect. I ruled out the lift pump by hot wiring it…

    Hello, I have a guys 2001 Dodge that is losing about two to three quarts of oil out the breather tube in 50 miles. This tube comes out the side of the lifter/pushrod cover. The truck runs fine and is not underpowered but there is also a good deal of blow by coming out the oil fill at the rocker cover. Right off the bat I’m thinking bad rings but I’ve read some other forums that said a bad vacuum pump could cause this also. It started happening all of a sudden which causes me concern that it might be a vacuum pump if that can cause it. Thoughts?

    No general diesel so it’s going under second gen I guess. Have you ever used cetane Amsoil and a couple other brands. My truck seems to like it. Mileage I really don’t know.   19. The Beast NV4500 has a issue with getting stuck in 4th gear. Now I know @dripley mention his shift issue for his NV5600 where the steel tip was worn out and had to replace the shift tower. Now for the NV4500 I've been hanging up with 4th gear if I shift too aggressive from 5th to 4th. If I do hang the shifter up I've got to pull the shift tower up to free it and then shift all forks back to neutral. Then reinstall. When I heard about Dripley and his issue I only looked at the shift tip for the NV4500 and didn't see why.     Hello, I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 3500 5.9 4x4 5spd. I started having a dead pedal and surging issue a few days ago. OBD reader shows low voltage to TPS. I used mikes diagram and made it to step 9 and I had continuity with the PCM and ECM orange and dark blue wire. It’s saying repair short to ground in the orange and blue wire. I checked all of the grounds to the ECM and PCM but I’m not sure where to check for the orange and blue grounding. I would appreciate any help that you guys can offer. I’m not a very good mechanic and no one in my area can even get my truck in the shop until September 15…
