What are these rubber grommets that came with the new Fel-Pro gasket for the tappet cover? Existing bolts only have a sealing washer?

  2. I am fixing to replace my tappet cover gasket as it has decided it wants to leak quite a bit. Before it was a 1 maybe 2 drops on the ground total and now the side of my block is black and it leaves a bigger puddle of oil than what i would like too on the ground. Not very much still and oil level is checked to make sure its safe! But, I want to know if I can purchase this 12v tappet cover off ebay and bolt it right up with a new gasket? Or will it not work? I Want the extra vent and c ant jar loose of $300 for a billet one.

How long should it take to change a tappet cover gasket? Cummins says that is where my oil leak is at.

While replacing the tappet cover gasket on my 2000 4WD 3500 Ram Automatic (VP44) (Thanks Mopar1973Man as I used your 2 great "How to" posts extensively to replace the gasket), I came across two lines near the back of the tappet cover which are currently not hooked up to anything. Before I complete the installation, and before I seal everything up, I thought that I should ask the Forum if these two lines should be connected to something that I have overlooked. I have attached a photo with a yellow note pad as background. One line appears to be an electrical plug with up to 4 connections. It stands out in the photo. The other, at the top of the photo and barely on th…

  5. In the middle of replacing injection pump when I notice the condition of the tappet cover gasket. It's severely cracked, but not leaking (yet). I'm going to replace it as long as I'm this far in it already, along with the camshaft position sensor - it looks like a bear to access when the injection pump is in place. My question is about the insulation panel situated between the tappet cover and the ECM. It looks terrible, and I'm inclined to just leave it off as I don't care about the noise put off by the engine, and some even suggest it holds water and promotes rusting of the tappet cover. My only concern is it may shield some heat from the ECM, even though it's on th…

  6. 2001 with 326,000+ Previous sloppy work as VP44 had 2 top studs with nuts & rear bracket was broken. So I’m assuming original pump went out prior to 127,000 mi when I bought it. Over the last year, oil leak developed. I wasn’t overly concerned with miles upwards if 300,000 until I was adding 2 to 3 qts every 100 miles or so. Eventually traced the leak to either vacuum pump or pushrod cover. Resealed pump & replaced power steering pump. Still had the leak. Pulled the VP, Vacuum pump & the cover. Replaced the seal on the cover. Inside of 2 weeks the new rubber seal blew out again. I will use a high temp gasket sealant this time AND ADD aluminum fl…

I am currently in the middle of my rebuild of my 99 cummins. I made one mistake in my disassembly of the block. I forgot to remove the tappets and lay them out in order and with everything else after i removed cam. I spun the block on the stand to work on something else and down fell all 12 tappets onto the garage floor as I am chasing them down before they rolled under bench, cussing my way as I go. Now my question to you guys is this, how important is it for the tappets to go where they where. Everything else is meticulously laid out and my ocd is driving me up the wall about this. Does it matter? I can not see any differance in wear, marks, …

I have recently developed a distinct random tapping noise from the engine it normally does it at running temp and is more noticeable at idle. Could this be a injector, cam follower? I hope its not a piston skirt. What's ur all take on this

  9. Lately I've started to notice what sounds like a slight tapping after my engine gets up to normal temperature. It's a very light tap & hard to hear but you can definitely hear it when you listen closely....Sometimes it even sounds like a clock ticking fast when driving normally.....Only thing I know that I have changed the last month or so is that I've been running Stanadyne Performance formula in my diesel....Is this an exhaust valve or something that I'm hearing?

So I’m running through the pros and cons of tapping my VP. My main thinking is it’d be fun to have until I can throw bigger injectors in the truck and use the quad to tune accordingly. My main concerns are I’m not entirely sure of the mileage on the VP. I think it’s at around 70ish and even though the PO kept good care of the truck, he didn’t have records of it and I had to call the dealership to confirm and they were a little unsure of the date as it’d been a while and they’re system had crashed at some point making certain things not show. Either way, PO didn’t use two stroke, ran a hyper tech tuner and had an intake lift pump so I’m sure it ra…

Thanks Tom

  12. I am experiencing what i think is the TC going in and out of lock up. This occurs randomly and anywhere from 40 at initial shift into OD and cruising at 70+ on the interstate in cruise control. The tach jumps approximately 250 for anywhere from 1 second to 20 seconds with no increase in speed. I have taken the truck to a friend (master mechanic) and he said it could be due to brake switch position. he adjusted the switch with no favorable result. He said that the position of the switch in relation to the steering column does not allow for adequate movement to remove the gap between switch and pedal. The next step that he recommended was a new switch that could be modified…

So i've been contemplating doing the switch mod for locking my TC. but i have one unanswered question. with the switch in the off position wiill the TC lock on it's on normally? then if i want to lock it then i cna flip the switch? right not mine works great. but there are times when i'd like some engine braking and other geek reasons to be able to manually lock and unlock it. Thank all.

  15. Anybody ever do their own tc lock up switch? Tst products has a write up t install one for the cost of a toggle switch and a little wire. They tell you to splice into the orange and brown wire coming out of the middle plug at the ecm, run a wire to a toggle switch and then come out of the other leg to ground. Then they tell you to pull the trans relay and jump 2 specific terminals to give the tc lock selonoid constant power. The problem im having is when i jump these 2 terminals the selonoid (im assuming) starts to click rapidly in the trans. This does not seem right and i unplugged it as soon as i located the source of the noise. Anybody have this issue?according to the…

Getting ready to get a 30' bumper pull and ProPride hitch to tow with the rig in my signature. The PacBrake electronics tie into the lock up wire at the ECM to activate the exh brake when the unit is turned on and foot comes off the accelerator. If I wanted to add a TC lock up switch so that I can lock up in 2nd gear on up (Dynamic VB modded to allow that) for towing slow up steep inclines, can I do this without inhibiting the use of the exh brake? I'm assuming that I'd leave the PacBrake switch "off" and use the lock up switch as needed climbing hills. Then when going downhill, turn the TC lock switch "off" and turn on the PacBrake. Anyone have any wiring info on this? S…

Hi I have a strange problem that I have noticed since installing my quadzilla. Since installing my quad I have noticed my TC lock up is lazy and doesn't lock up really unless I'm climbing a grade and pushing the pedal a bit harder. Or I'm wide open in OD it will lock up.. Turn the quad off I get 'normal' lock up in 3rd and OD. Anyone else come into this issue before? Best way to over come? Mystery switches are they worth it? I don't tow I just use this truck for fun it gets used a couple of times a week. I have a bullet input, triple disc modified OD with more clutches etc (firepunk comp 2 rebuild kit without the billet int…

I've been wondering if it would be possible to rig up something to lock up my tc whenever I want. If possible are there dangers in doing this?
