2nd Generation Dodge Reliability / Performance

This is a discussion forum of the 1994 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel of performance and longevity. This includes tricks of getting more MPG, HP/TQ, or just getting to the next milestone.

  1. I read the thread on IAT relating to MPG performance during winter weather. I have possibly a similar issue and was wondering if anyone else has experience or if anyone might know what is causing it. Just a piece of mind thing more than anything. Set Up: 02 cummins, 6speed, 102k miles, with Edge EZ and RV275's Symptoms: I have confirmed that during cold weather usually below 50-55 degrees I have a noticeable hesitation around 1400-1600 rpms when I get down on it. My version of a romp does not involve spinning up a $1000 set of michelins so just know that I don't hammer on my stock clutch like that. It usually happens in 5 and 6 gear. Especial…

Have a question regarding my boost readings. I have a DPS 62/65/12 on the truck with 125 hp injectors. It should be boosting up to 45 psi. However, I am only seeing maybe 41 psi uphill with my foot on the floor. I've tried cleaning the MAP sensor out (there was lots of carbon in it), but it didn't get to the levels it should. I've adjusted the wastegate rod all the way closed in case the drive pressure was opening the flap, but that didn't help either. Anyone have any similar experiences or advice? Thanks

  5. Just curious what people are running as a majority. I heard when I owned a 7.3l that the 6637 was the preferred filter to use for two reasons. One, it was cheap and two,it had a metal mesh on OD AND ID. Many of the guys claimed it was les chance of filter getting wet, tearing and getting sucked into the turbo. Bad news. I just picked up the recommended 2790 which is a bigger diameter 10.5" versus 6637 which is 8.5", but it does not have a metal mesh I'd. Just paper on I'd and mesh only on od. Just curious if anyone has seen any problems with the 2790 collapsing. I'd also like to know what cfm each of them flow if anybody knows! Thanks.

Hello Everyone, I would like to go on a few off pavement trips with my rig and would like to know suggestions on ensuring I make it back to the road. I am not looking for extra hieght per say, but any suggestions on from those who spend more time in the dirt then me? I am looking to tackle mild trails with all of my gear, nothing too crazy like rock crawling. As it sits now, truck is 100% stock suspension and rear has factory overloads. Thank you!

And the bf 1275 water separator anyone have any input on this I can get the Baldwin filters for cheeper the fleet guard so I'm curious as far as I'm aware that micron should be OK and Baldwin makes a good filter I'm aware it's not a cat filter but im not expecting it to be

  8. Well gang... I'm back to playing around with OBDII Data again. I'm wanting to move the ScanGauge II to the 1996 Dodge Ram and use my OBDLink LX bluetooth dongle for the 2002 Cummins. The OBDLink LX is basically plug and plug. The Android Software you can get off Google Play. Now as for setup there is a bit configuring. Make sure to fill in the easy stuff like year, make, model. Now the important stuff is the volumetric efficiency, engine displacement (liters) and select intake manifold absolute pressure. You see the 77.5% that is figured from the base line for Cummins ISB is 63% then my old ScanGauge II had a offset of 14.5% so adding together you get 77.5%. …

Thinking of installing the FASS tank Sump as I'm getting some minor fuel cavitation below half tanks of fuel. I hear fuel pressure drops are not as dramatic when hauling heavy up hills and the lift pumps running quieter. I already have all the fuel system mods except for the tank sump but I have one concern.... I read some discussion that it is illegal to draw fuel from the bottom of the tank in some states. Anyone know about this? Also wondering if anyone heard of leaks from any tank sump installs. Merry Christmas to everyone

So if you look in our books no where does it recommend 5w-40 but it also say 10w-30 if you are below about 32, and 15w-40 is not recommended below 5 degrees, so My question is this for a truck with higher milage that it always loaded day in and day out (no less than 500lbs in the bed ever) often pulling a trailer. The truck sees -30 to plus 45 during the winter months alone. What do I use I have been told all you can use in a 24valve 5.9 is 15w-40 but then have been told that I should run 5w-40 in winter but amsoil and dodge/cummins don't list that weight as recommended. What would you guys recommend? Sorry to beat a dead horse....

  11. The previous owner of my truck ran straight tap water for who knows how long before I bought it which caused the cooling system to be contaminated with rust. I've been dealing with the issue off and on since buying the truck in 2011 and finally got around to taking care of it I was doing some research on eliminating rust from the cooling system when I came across a product called Thermocure by Evapo-Rust. It has some really good reviews on Summit Racing and looked promising so I ordered up a quart $26 shipped. I removed the thermostat and flushed the cooling system everyday for a couple days using tap water until the Thermocure arrived. I drained t…

I have run into a problem with my current setup with my egts while towing no matter what I have my my quadzilla set on. If I continue to tow a lot what turbo should I upgrade to or should I go back to stock injectors? The turbo is the original HX35. If I upgraded turbo I just want a direct bolt on. Thank an you for your input.

  13. Or whats the most miles you ever heard on a Dodge trans that's original? Mine has 82 k on it with no sign of problems. It's been hauling heavy about half those miles.

Hey guys, just wondering, is Timbo one of those mods worth doing even if my current APPS isn't acting up? I definitely planned on going the Timbo route once my APPS finally crapped out on me, but just wondering if I'd even notice a difference switching to it now? I'm usually not a big fan of swapping out parts just to do it, but if it'll give a noticeable difference in drivability or something, I'm more then willing to do it.

So while Mike is happy with the power of the quad he is struggling to get good mpg out of the unit, unlike Tyler and myself. Bothersome because we didn't even have to try it just came with the lack of smoke. I think Tyler did 21 on his first try with his firehouse injectors and I did 24.7 without trying with my 100's Mike however is struggling to hit 20. We are all running the same timing map, but different tuning on the canbus fueling. I am however down at nearly sea level now running Mike's tune and I am smoke free so I know Mike's tune is WAY under fueled since he has 50's. I am betting Mike has get away with a starting…

  17. so let me begin with this, this all started when i decided to install some DAP 75hp injectors, ( im pretty sure anyway) so awhile back, i posted something about my fuel filter canister leaking which was creating a fuel/air leak, i would surge at first startup. I replaced the canister, all seemed good since then, but i haven't really drove it that much since replacing it, ( I also after i installed the injectors the first time( wrong, i did it backwards and realized it after i got done talking to Mike,) went back through a second time and checked all the o-rings on the injectors, o-rings and crossover tubs, all checked out. still did the same thing after i put it all back …

So I just got done replacing my vp44, after I was getting (hard start or so I thought I'm 50/50 with this I don't know if it was my starter and cables or actually a hard hot start) I got the new one in, checked all connections, made sure the key way is in the groove, and started putting everything back together. Got it started once to have the starter go out the next startup.... Put new starter in and all new cables, I finally get to test drive it. ( I also have a wire tap) so I went for a test run..... And to me it doesn't feel like it had the spunk like my old pump did. ( if that makes any sense) I'm 100% sure of this because I lost about 7 psi of boost.( with old I w…

Basic Setup Engine: Stock with studs, Industrial Injection 62/12 turbo, 125 SAC injectors Trans: ATS low stall converter, billet input Goal: NO SMOKE, instant boost, and lots of spinny turbine noises. I don't need more power, but if I get it, oh well. The questions are: 1. Will twins get this done for me? I think so, @TFaoro had the same turbo and injectors when he went twins and he said it was instant boost and no smoke (until he blew up his intercooler.) 2. What secondary to use? I am looking at Crazy Carl's S475 and S472... He has three options for both. Select the smaller turbine (83/1.10) for tow…
