2nd Generation Dodge Reliability / Performance

This is a discussion forum of the 1994 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel of performance and longevity. This includes tricks of getting more MPG, HP/TQ, or just getting to the next milestone.

I've been told by a friend of mine he had a 25 hp loss using a BHAF . Based on research I find that hard to believe. I'm about to put one on my truck this next week and like to know if I should proceed or not.

I saw some oil drips on the road when I wet to the post office this morning. Looked under my truck (just to make sure it wasn't me) and to my surprise I had a big puddle under my truck. Had about 40 miles since I changed paper. The clamp came loose and popped off and oil was coming out between the can and base. Limped home and tried to tighten the filter, but it seems that it had expanded with oil and pressure. Would not re-seal. So I installed a new roll and now seems to be fine. But now I'm paranoid about it starting to leak again on a long trip leg and pumping out all the oil. Any words of wisdom? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  3. My plan here pretty soon is to go with a 62/68/12 or 14 BW turbo and possibly 150 vco or sac injectors. Ive talked to a couple sales reps and they said i should consider upgrading my springs and push rods as well. I dont feel like this setup would warrant the need to upgrade the springs and rods so I am asking for some input? Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. This is my DD so the most important thing is reliability but I also want to have some fun from time to time as well so if anyone has any other build suggestions let me know. I do not tow much often enough to have build that is used for towing.

Hey guys, so anytime I hear something on CF that I find questionable, I come here to let the people I trust set me straight lol If any of you are bored, take a look at the comments toward the end of this thread and let me know your thoughts. http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/3rd-gen-powertrain/2095985-low-mpg-new-post.html#/forumsite/20661/topics/2095985?page=4 As I say in the thread, I though ATF was a major no go for all diesels, and the same for 2 stroke in an egr engine, but these guys claim not. What's the deal?

i got pro comp ultra lite gauges boost and EGT. the boost likes to flicker a lot when boost numbers are higher and the egt works fine for a while then it starts to flicker all over and sometimes quit. I had the same problem with the last pro comp ultra lite gauges I had. Bought these bran new like 6 months ago really starting to tick me off auto meter suppost to be good stuff I had better luck with my glow shift. So im wondering am I the only one or is this just a crappy gauge selection. The EGT worked flawless for first month. Boost always been all over.

  7. Has anyone run a Torque converter lockup controller like the BD TorqLoc or the done the torque converter lockup mod? If so how did you like it? when did it work best? The reason for asking is I have built my trans with a SunCoast stage 3 kit and when I'm driving around town or say under 50mph i leave the Overdrive off and everything feels good. But when I'm getting on the highway to go over 50 I turn the overdrive on and it feels like I will hit the overdrive gear at about 45 and my EGT's climb while the boost falls off. Im just trying to figure out if the torque converter I bought isn't doing what it should or if the trans is having an issue holding the gears or if mayb…

  9. I have a 2001 3500 dually 4x4 quad cab long bed, stock tire size, nv4500 5 speed with 3:55 gears. What is the average fuel milage expected from these trucks? The only "mods" done that I know of are a FASS ddrp pump in factory location and the exhaust has been replaced but nothing crazy. I measured the tailpipe it's 4" but have not measured the rest under the truck yet. So to my knowledge it's pretty bone stock with 141k on the clock. Last I checked I was at about 15mpg. Mainly to and from work, about a 20 Mile drive, about 5 of that is considered city the rest is state route 60mph or highway about 65mph. Just curious if I'm around the norm for what I have. Tha…

i haven't seen anything latly about using b-20 fuel. over long term is there anything bad that will happen to my truck? i live just outside of chicago so i could use it almost year. there is a mobile gas station on my way home from work so its easily availble. besides the better mpg it is ussually a little cheaper then #2 diesel. so i guess the real ? is. use it yes or no?

Hey,I was curious...I have a BD Power box which has levels up to 5-5. It is just like the Edge Comp. I was curious if Edge can make it "hot" like the Comp Drag to keep fueling up to the 3200 rpm range??? I have been told it the same as the Comp but different label because BD Power bought some of these boxes from Edge and slapped their name on them. Does anyone have any idea? Thank y'all

Has anyone here had to replace their belt tensioner yet? If so at how many miles was it about? I had to down the truck for a week to get my ECM rebuilt by ACS and I'm doing other work to the truth. I was wondering if the the tension-er being OEM to the truck in 1999 is still good for years to go, or if i should replace it now.

A little history...('01 HO) I ran an Edge EZ and RV 275 injectors for 12 years, no issues. Then 5 years ago I installed the Edge Juice with the same original RV injectors, now I have EGT's and coolant temp issues. It dyno's 400/900, I don't want to loose that. Please don't recommend Quad, I can just barely use my cell phone. The RV injectors are 17 years old and have 315k miles on them. I am now getting a hard overnight start with 1/2 tank of fuel, no problem with above that. So I am due for new ones and connector tubes. Here is my question: If I go back to stock injectors and use the juice on a higher setting, will I keep my power and drop EGT/coolant temps? …
