I know this topic can get a little heated so I'm really not trying to start that up, just want to gather some info.

It's time for another oil change and I'm doing it myself. My dealer raised their prices so it no longer makes sense to take it to them. Here's my questions

1. Currently have 15w-40 dino oil and looking to swap to synthetic. I've only seen Amsoil that has a synthetic 15w-40, does anyone else?

2. If I do put something like Rotella T6 5w-40, what's the chances of making leaks worse or appear?

3. Should I even worry about running a lighter weight oil when my current climate never see's 0* or below temps?

I've seen more high mileage vehicle on petroleum oils than synthetic oils. I've had worked on several Dodge Cummins trucks with over 600k miles and more with just petroleum oils used. Like my last oil

  • Yes, but they are often the Fram made Mopar filters and not the Fleetguard made ones.    I prefer Donaldson Blue filters. Nothing else touches their ratings or life.

  • I use the blue ones too. Thanks for turning me on to them. Pretty good price wise also if you buy several as I remember.

At least my junk isn't blowing oil all over the place. Mine does leak a bit around the gear case and burn a bit through valve seals.

Billet tappet covers aren't friendly, but they do work well for getting the pressure out. I'm going to figure something out to keep the oil in the motor.

Either reduce the blown on the piston rings or reduce the boost and drive pressures.

Under extreme cylinder pressures blow by is going to happen no matter what.

Not going to reduce anything, just need to figure out how to keep the oil in the crankcase with that style of breather.

The tappet cover he has is completely open for the holes. Nothing to slow down or condense the oil before exiting. I had a similar issue when I tried to use it. I did warn him it was going to push oil out of them lol

I have the keating cover with "baffles"

Either way the engine needed something so......

I'll just leave this here.... I think UOA's like this speak volumes for synthetics. TBN is over 9 after 11.5 months.

I'll add that my average fuel economy was around 13 for this timeframe. The truck gets good mileage when empty, but I'm not empty often. This 6400 miles has some descent towing/hauling and all of it is with a 400rwhp tune. I'm not overly easy on the motor, but I don't abuse it.

I didn't know 15/40 was a synthetic from Amsoil. Hmm

Yes. They have a couple, but I like the AME Heavy Duty Diesel and Marine oil. It's a CI-4+ 15w-40 that does awesome even in cold soaked temps down to -20°, which is the coldest I've started it in. I've ran it down to -30° but it was "warm" when I got to those temps.

Why in the world did I think you had the open hole one like I did.....

:lmao: because you told me very specifically do NOT get the one you have.

Get @trreed to buy it from you and you can buy a Keating cover.

Yeah I'll stick with my 12v breather.  Thanks doe.

5w-40 and 0w-40 have the same high temperature (operating) viscosity as 15w-40, and running any of the aforementioned synthetics will, at the very least, be just as good as conventional oil. Where the synthetics excel is maintaining the proper cold viscosity at lower temperatures, eg. cold starts, as well as attaining a much higher oil degradation temperature, which you would find in your turbocharger after a hot shut down; the synthetic oil doesn't start to coke until almost 100 F higher than dino oil iirc.

Unless you've dealt with the PCV and care that much about a little weeping from a seal or two, the only thing synthetic is going to hurt is your wallet...

Order 12 and get real deal,. Just kidding. I bought 10 the first time but used them up in just over 2 years. My truck travels a whole lot more than yours.
