  1. you could swap out your Dana 70 for an 80 and have the same capacity of a SRW 1 ton unless your going to a newer truck. The new trucks have a higher RAWR than the 2nd gens but even then it wouldn't be a substantial amount.
  2. Thats part of the problem with hauling a toy hauler empty. Theyre designed to be balanced out with toys in the back so when you don't have anything in it your pin weight will increase even though the trailer may be lighter. I bet if you had some weight in the rear and emptied your tank in front of the axles your pin weight would decrease. What is the capacity of your tires?
  3. Since you notice a vibration and are pretty sure it is coming from the rear, the driveshaft would be a good place to start. Also carefully inspect the carrier bearing (if you have a 2 piece driveshaft)
  4. Woo Hoo! :cheers:So are you going to leave the potentiometer switch in or replace the TPS?
  5. Was this the truck with the new vp and the "mystery noise" you were trying to track down? Did you ever get it resolved?
  6. Are you planning on a build with the Samurai? Or a daily driver?17mpg is better than I can get hauling a trailer. I hauled mine back from Cincinnati empty (about 325 miles) and averaged around 16 running 65 - 68 mph. Averaged just over 14 on the way down with a Mustang.
  7. I wonder what the limitations of the vp are for fueling? Are you running the oem size injector lines? That big of an injector sure does seem like it would be pushing the limits of an oem pump but maybe not...
  8. Any vibrations at speed? Do you feel any shaking in the steering wheel? Is it worse or better when you apply the brakes? Really the only way to check a u joint is by disconnecting the driveshaft and check each joint individually by rotating by hand. Any slop or stiff spots is a good indication. Another way to check (but not as accurate) if you have an infrared temp gun after taking a drive start taking temp readings at the suspect areas. You can also feel by hand and get a good idea but it wont be as accurate. If one wheel is considerably hotter than the rest, or one universal is hotter than the others, you've probably found your culprit.
  9. What are your plans with the truck? If you plan on leaving it in stock form, it was most likely not worth the swap. Cummins spends lots of time and money in R&D. They engineered the truck with the HY simply swapping out one component will make a negligable difference if any. Now if you were to throw a tuner and a set of injectors on (added timing and fuel) now you will be benefiting from the larger housing.
  10. Welcome to the fam!that used to be an easy question to answer, slap an AirDog or Fass on and you would be good to go for many years. Unfortunately like everything else they have been outsourcing their pumps and using cheap components and the reliability has taken a plunge. Lots of warranty issues from AirDog, myself included within the last few weeks. Mine was covered under warranty, but I am seriously looking at the mechanical pumps that are belt driven off the crank. Take your time and do your research, it is a big investment no matter what route you take.
  11. Yes it is an adapter for compression testing. you can find them cheaper than that but it is only the adapter you still need the gauge and hoses. I've seen cheap sets for around $225 the better units run closer to $450 for everything.
  12. I was on my way to work a month or so a go. i was working a big shutdown and had to be in early so I left my house around 215am. I got about 6 or 7 miles down the road and was cresting up over a hill and saw some eyeballs in the road. deer are extremely common around here so that was my initial thought. I slowed down and as I got closer realized these were much larger. I got down to about 10mph and got close enough to realize there were 4 horses standing in a huddle in the middle of the road. They were just standing there staring at me like I was bothering them so I tooted my horn and they split in different directions. I didn't have time to stop and start knocking on doors (I live in farm country and they could have belonged to anybody) so I did the next best thing and called the Sherriff. I gave them an exact location as it was within a few hundred feet of an intersection with a dirt road and told them if I hadn't of slowed down and honked at them they probably would have stood there until I hit them. They said they would send an officer out right away. Later that morning around 6am my cousin was passing through and in the same area a lady had come through in an SUV and plowed 2 of them. She was going fast enough to kill both horses and my cousin said it destroyed the SUV. I looked in the paper for a report the next several days and saw nothing. I wonder how that lady turned out, I feel horrible for leaving before the sherriff showed up.
  13. I can't imagine the driver walked away from that one, hopefully there wasn't an entire family in the truck....Keep your chin up Russ, it happens to the best. Many service stations are not set up for long trucks and trailers, and if your not familiar with the area you just don't know what your getting into until your there. Equipment can be fixed, the good news is nobody was hurt.
  14. I ran mine up along the trans dipstick and then under the weather seal along the firewall so it is out of sight. Then I ran it through the firewall into the driver side cab with the rest of my wires. Its a few extra feet of wire but not a big deal IMO
  15. What manufacture/size tires are those Mike?
  16. Like Mike says get those batts checked out. If you have low enough voltage the truck may not start or will start and not run right these trucks need good batteries to run properly
  17. Ahh, a neutral safety switch will prevent a vehicle from even turning over. Sounds like he's got a little gremlin somewhere if its that random...
  18. There will be a neutral safety switch, should be on the base of the shift lever if its an auto. If he plays around with the shifter without moving the car will it sometimes start?
  19. Make absolutely certain you have no leaks in the fuel line anywhere. A minor leak will introduce air into the system and cause hard/ no starts. How long are you cranking the engine with the injectors cracked loose? Which other sensors did you have to plug in? That is rather strange why they would be unplugged in the first place....
  20. We go fourwheeling in West Virginia every spring and the road coming into one of the camps we have stayed at is similar to what you describe. Very steep sections of switchback gravel road with occasional washouts. I do use low range as 4wheel drive is required due to the steepness of the grade, lack of traction and dragging a trailer up it.I don't think the truck would make it the entire way up in hi range it would be very hard on it and probably overheat. Keep in mind my top speed is never over 10 mph and by the time I get to the top I have seen temps of around 210 or so. I don't think you have anything to worry about as long as your radiator is clean and like AH said gauges are not real important ona stock truck but they are a good peace of mind - - - Updated - - - Unfortunately it does not
  21. Most likely what caused your temp to come up was prolonged driving in 2nd gear. The 47 has no lock up in the low gears and will shoot your trans temp skywards which will eventually raise coolant temp as well. I would be more concerned with how hot your trans got on that climb
  22. Upper link torque spec = 35 ft lbslower link nut torque spec 27 ft lbs Your probably fine where your at, the only negative I could see with over torquing is the bushings possibly splitting a little sooner than normal but one would have to be grossly over zealous with the wrench, IMO
  23. There is a recommended torque spec for them IIRC around 25ft lbs. I will try to find my manual a little later to verify that. I usually just go until the bushings squash out flush with the washers and give er a lil extra..
  24. Sorry I missed the part on running on the center. What is the max rated pressure of those? It sounds like you are experiencing the same thing a few of my friends with their TOYOS have experienced new. Iv'e also been in a few MDT's with new retreads and they felt very similar until they got scrubbed a little.
