I heard a rumor that the next generation of Cummin engines will not use DEF. This is all still rumor but I'm hopeful.

I heard the DEF rumor myself also. We'll see.

What I've seen so far from Cummins is the industrial applications not having an EGR. The "aftertreatment" system is HUGE though, and I don't think they could fit it under a pickup. Maybe a big truck, but even then it looks big. I don't see it coming for us yet.

Could you post up some pictures so I can get a better grasp of what you are talking about?

The off road mining / construction equipment industry is fighting this issue now trying to find places on the equipment for all of the emissions components but I have not seen any mfg talking about non Def system yet. I have read something a while back from Cummins own site where they are looking to design electric drive systems. Here are a couple news stories from Cummins site.

It's the 2019 industrial equipment that will be EGR free (Stage V)

Whether this stuff will make it to the US or not, I'm not sure.

Yeah I know others are ditching EGR as well but DEF is not going anywhere. Good Cummins is finding a way to reduce the size of the after treatment systems on the smaller engines. Be interesting to see what they come up with on the high HP end of the line.

Good on them for finding a way to eliminate the EGR!  Almost a throwback to the VP44 trucks that met the emissions standards of the time without a cat, or the late model, emission free 5.9's

The start/stop feature seems like it will bring some premature maintenance to items if the motor isn't properly cooled first.
