2nd Generation Dodge 24 Valve Powertrain

This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

I just installed a Fass 165gph system on my truck. I previously was running the carter pump on the frame with no issues. Now if I let my truck sit over night it cranks longer before it starts. Also I see no fuel pressure on my gauge until after the engine starts. My fuel pump is wired to the 10 amp fuse in the cab marked ignition. After the truck sits over night I turn on the key and check the fuel neck to see if the pump is pumping and maybe my gauge is wrong but its not until the truck starts. I am lost on this one its not that complicated of a system but this has me stumped.

Just finished installing the Fass 165, tried to prime it but the pump doesn’t have power. I unplugged it from the Fass and tested it and I’m getting 0volts. The relay is getting 12V from one of the plugs. Has anyone had a problem with Fass wiring before?

I been reading so much my head is about to explode. I went to Thoroughbred Diesel and looked around and still don't know anymore now than when I was reading here. So when my airdog dies, get a fass or not.

  4. Needed new hose for the fass due to the rubber cracking. Right now I have it plumbed into the vp without an issue. For those who’ve added the factory filter into the route, what size fittings did you need to do that, Both in and out of the filter housing. I’ll be using pushloc fittings with this also. I’d like to add it in to get the WIF light, because why not have it.

I installed a FASS system (see my sig) on the weekend as per instructions except that I installed the supply to the stock filter housing (with gutted filter) to maintain my heater & pressure sensor. The other supply end connected to the stock sending unit and power directly to the battery. It did quiet down the engine a bit, less rattle.I have a small marshal 15psi mech. pressure gauge attached to the stock filter housing with a snubber. Before the install I saw 7psi @ idle with a slight drop @ wot, after the FASS install, I'm seeing only 10.8 or 11psi. I expected the advertised 16psi or at least 14. Has anyone else seen numbers this low after install? I haven't conta…

Hey I just had to replace my Fass pump and it is located under the drivers side cab corner where they recommend and it has been there for 3 to 4 years and man the thing gets abused there! It was a pain because my wonderful state knows how to use salt on their roads "RUSTY" So was wondering if anyone has made some sort of splash gaurd to protect the pump better against road spray, thanks:thumbup2:

  7. Well guys a couple of weeks ago I posted that I was having problems blowing the 30 amp fuse on my Fass pump. Well I got alot of good feedback on things to try but I put in a 30 circut breaker and had no more problems untill today:doh: Went into a store and left truck running and when I came out my fuel pressure alarm was on 0 psi:banghead: So after talking with Fass tech support I removed the pump and put straight 12v to it and nothing also noticed one of the wires going into the pump was melted off:shrug: So call Fass back and ordered my replacement pump so now I am dowm my only rig for a couple days:cry: So lesson learned get to the bottom of the problem just don't patc…

Hi all, I am looking for guys running the Fuel Boss with the FASS regulator (or similar) instead of the bypass valve it comes with. I would like to try it on mine but I'd like to find some info before I drop $140 on the regulator. I have the fuel boss and I like it, but I'd like to keep my fuel pressure a little more steady. So I'd like to talk to someone running this combo who can tell me how it actually works out. TIA!

  9. So I'm in the process of putting the truck back together and I ran into an issue. My fass draw straw is oof the old design, the new fittings I got for my fass don't work with the fass95. So I was going to take the inner during on the draw straw and use that on the fass pump. But that leaves my draw straw. I was looking at getting the Fass Sump kit since it allows you to draw from the inside of the bowl. Being here in Jersey I don't foresee any issues with hitting brush, etc that could cause it it be knocked out. I refuse to use a sump that requires an external hose, as I'm currently dealing with an enlarged hole for my old draw straw. If your won…

Back in July, I installed an adjustable idle solenoid on my truck. I wanted the engine to run at about 1150 rpm fast idle for winter time warm-ups and for summertime air conditioning during hot weather, should I need to be parked for a while and want to be comfortable. After some research, I decided on an AC Delco carburetor idle stop solenoid, part number 214-2138. It looked durable and the idle stop was adjustable. Under the hood I removed the APPS mounting bracket and fabricated a mount for the idle stop solenoid bracket to bolt to. I welded the new idle stop solenoid mount to the APPS mounting bracket. I installed the idle stop sol…

A little while ago my truck started act funny. You would get on it and then when you would let of it would "fast lope" idle real rough and eventually clear up. Well yesterday I got on it, it started running rough then died and wouldn't start back. I sat in the middle of the road for about 10min trying to start it before I got mad and used the starter with the truck in gear to pull it out of the way. About 20' of that and it fired right up. Any suggestions on what it might be? Only happens after getting on it.

  16. On Dec 9th 2020 I bought a water pump from O'Reilly's and installed it in my pickup. All was good until last night when it went out. It leaked enough coolant out that the radiator fan airflow splashed it into my alternator and caused it to quit charging. My Edge Juice with Attitude said I had 11.8V when I got home. I found my receipt for the water pump and it says it's a Murray CP7145 and it doesn't fit my 01 Cummins, even though that's what O'Reilly's gave me. The pump they gave me fits a 98 and older 12V. A Murray CP6148 fits my 01 and it has a different pump blade design. The 98 pump has a curved plate on it while the 01 style pump doesn't have …

In the box I got; 1 lip seal with plastic guide sleeve 1 seal install/driver/depth gauge 1 smaller thin seal (steel backed with rubber od and id) with same ID as crank OD, but smaller OD than cover hole 1 black rubber 'square profile' o ring that has same OD as cover hole 1 black rubber 'rectangular profile' o ring. Is this for the breather cap seal? 1 gear case gasket Is any of this 'extra' stuff for the actual crank seal??? Ok, methinks the steel-backed smaller seal actually snaps inside the main part of the big crank seal... AFTER installed to proper depth... Hence "2 piece seal…

I haven't had my truck long only done a few upgrades. Got a few questions I have been slowly replacing my vacuum lines after finding them with holes. My question is why does sometime I have more blowby then others and yes its warmed up sometimes it's nothing coming out vent tube and sometimes it steaming pretty decent. I did the cap upside down test and it doesn't move and it doesn't tea kettle. What would cause this? Next question is I changed my oil with 15w 40 delo 400 after driving 1000 miles the oil is still clean and clear I'm use to diesel oil being black soon as u crank it and check it. Is this ok or something wrong? Last question is I had a intercooler boot cut I…

  19. Hey guys, Have a few questions about my truck. This site is awesome by the way. Very helpful for us backyard mechanics. I own a 2nd gen 24 valve with a VP. Since buying the truck last year I've restored the truck cosmeticly and mechanically. I've come to the point in my project, where I'd like to do some top end modifications. Namely removing the head and rebuilding it. The main question I have ( any other information would be greatly appreciated ) is.. what is the procedure for removing push rods? My concern is that I understand that at the bottom side of the pushrods, there are tappets. I'm picturing in my mind, once I pull up on the pushro…
