This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

  1. Ok I did the mod and it primes when you go key on but when cranking it you can see the test light flashing (not staying steady) and then when it starts it stays steady is this what i am looking for? i don't have gauge for fuel yet but the lift pump is from parts store new and only 1000 miles old so far. I can tell right off the batt something is different because it cranks and lights first hit of the key where as since installing new lift pump it would crank a few times and some times you had to try 5 or 6 times before it would start!   2. Last night when leaving my son's football game, anytime I got over 45 mph it would do the TC lock/unlock. I also smelled a weird electronics smell at different times on the drive. Because of what I learned from this site I knew what to check first. This morning I checked the AC noise from the Alternator and it was .1 VAC I got it couple of years ago from NAPA so I pull it off and and head to my local NAPA. Unfortunately I couldn't find my receipt so another $170 later I am on my way back home.     I set my valves over a year ago and have been fighting a little puff of white smoke for the last few months. I just put in another set of injectors and still the same. Well looking at my hayes manual it says set the exhaust at .20 inch and intake at .10 inch. I have always used a small feeler gauge I used on my motorcycles and everyone of my exhaust is set to 20mm and intake at 10mm, which is like .004 inch and .008 inches. its a wonder I havent destroyed my engine and several others.:banghead: --- Update to the previous post...   4. I just had the VP44 and the lift pump on my 98.5 Dodge replaced. At idle, the engine surges from 600 to 800 rpm and wants to die when the accelerator is pressed. The injectors have been bled once, the pump has been primed with the key trick once or twice and I am not sure if the APPS reset has been done. A friend is doing the actual work, he is a heavy equipment diesel mechanic and has never worked on a Dodge. I do trust his work mechanically. Am I right in thinking we need to reset the APPS, prime it a half dozen times and bleed it one more time?It's kind of funny, I have been reading on here for several years now and never had a reason to post.     Some of yall may remember me posting about my truck just not running right. Biggest thing was no HP and lugging when letting out the clutch. No codes no exact anything really, so one day I had my friend come over with his scanner. We ran through all history and codes(this has been done no telling how many times and never caught it) and injector function when we finally noticed the inj pump voltage was 11.2 and we both not knowing for sure but thought this should be at least 12 volt.     Been fighting with a really strange issue. I used to have strange power issues and dead pedal and the tach would bounce around and die every now and again. I have since diagnosed the dead pedal back to a faulty factory apps and replaced that with a timbo unit. That actually seemed to fix almost all the issues. Maybe 2 weeks after all that, I went to the dealer and finally had high idle programmed into the truck. The high idle has not kicked on at all, and yes it is cold enough, and I'm sure the sensors are reading correctly, I'm going to double check tomorrow morning.     Was hoping to get some insite here. My truck wanders all over as If I was truck. It is amazing I havent been pulled over yet. It makes you tired driving on a trip as you are constantly trying to compensate to keep the truck going straight. Its not like a steering wheel play problem but it acts in a similar way. Today I put the new Borgeson steering box on, no help. I have run the tires at 35, 50 and 60, no better.I have new moog ball joints, and track bar, new tires, alignment. My truck has 60,000 miles. It is a 2001 2500 SLT 4 x 4. It does have the big ARB bumper and large winch. Also, it has new front shocks. Any ideas? Mark

    Ever sense the Body shop/insurance replaced my Complete Fan assembly after the Accident 2yrs ago my fan runs constantly. "I mean I never hear IT lock in or out even in the middle of winter 10f-15f degrees i can start it up and fan is fully engaged and when you take down the road it sounds like standing beside a jet airplane before takeoff .. after talking to a few people, I'm pretty sure they installed a aftermarket POS on my truck from keystone auto.. ARE there anything i can do to adjust or re-calibrate it.. rburks

    The other day when I started my truck, I walked back into shop and suddenly, it went into high idle mode by itself, temp was about 30. This morning, I went out to start truck, walked into house and it goes into 3 cylinder mode. About 5 above. I disconnected my fooler weeks ago. Had to reroute wires when I put clutch master in. Never hooked the fooler back up. Do I have a ghost? Do they do this without the fooler from factory? Never did it last year..............

    Should I change to BHAF? I just read a post that said K&N were junk. I bought the truck with it on there. Not a puller or racer just use it for work. I do pull loads ,GCVW about 35000. Just put fuel press. gauge on so empty I have 16#, and WOT better than 14#. Am looking to put more gauges on. I did go across the scale today with a load of wood that weighted GCVW 42100#, that was my truck & trailer. Hauled it down the road pretty good never cut the edge on and was up to 55 in about a mile. I M INPRESSED.

    Please help I'm at witts end. I just got 3/98 24valve and I'm trying to find out why it starts it right up, idles great and when you give it throttle in park for drive don't matter Motor doesn't go above 1500rpms . Got a code reader and it came up with what seems to be Dreaded P1689 code Which far as.I can find is something NO ONE agrees on of the cause!!     I keep getting P0237 when I rev the engine quickly, was lucky it did not do it for the Calif. smog check because it passed without throwing the code for him. I read that it is turbo boost sensor A circuit low. would appreciate some info on this. why and what sensor is reading this. truck seems to run fine and boost will go from 0 to 28 psi. thanks.

    I have been experiencing dead pedal some times it is as soon as I take off other times I can drive for 30 min before any bucking happens. I have already replaced the APPS with a new one and it worked fine for about a week or more then it started again. What could be the cause of this to make the sensor keep going out?

  18. So Ive been lookin through and searching every thread for info on how to adjust waste gate. I'm new to diesel so I am probably not even wording this corectlly. Plus my fat thumbs don't spell right on iPhone!!basically I'm looking for info on boost. I can get to twenty. Also is the gauge on the edge for boost accurate?Where does it get it's info.and does anyone have any exPerience with passing smog in California? Will mine pass ?
