2nd Generation Dodge 24 Valve Powertrain

This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

  1. My truck recently started having a intermittent loss of power, usually before the engine warms up. It also seems to be easier to stall while backing up a hill with a trailer. The check engine light never came on, but it did throw a P0216 and P0602 code. The first time I cleared the codes, there was an episode of intermittent power loss and both codes came back. The 2nd time I cleared the codes there was no power loss, and only the P0216 code came back. The truck is a 2001 5 speed. I replaced the VP-44 last year with a DAP pump and added a FASS lift pump. I currently have 15-17psi fuel pressure. The alternator is about a year old, and is a 16…

Experienced a dead pedal for the first time heading up the Blue Mountains last month on a trip to Seattle. Didn't recur again for a day, but occurred periodically on the return trip home. Seems to be under light load - last freeze frame shows 8.2%. No CEL, but found the DTC P0216 when I plugged in the scanner today, no other codes. I have 2 questions: First, I'm trying to follow the article (P0216 Fuel Injection Pump Timing Failure) and properly diagnose the problem. Where is "See FUEL INJECTION PUMP TIMING in ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS - RAM PICKUP - DIESEL article." located? I can't find it anywhere here. Second question: Does it matter? From what I'm re…

Hello all, My '99 is throwing the P0222 code. It can be cleared, but recurs intermittently. The engine does not derate, seems to run normally. Possible causes? Solutions? Truck is mostly stock, but does have a Van Aaken timing box, and a Timbo APPS.

I've been reading up on every topic remotely close to the VP44 and fuel system for the last month. Lost my lift pump and sender unit same time which apparently blew my VP. So...100% stock 2001 6-speed...buy a new VP and decide on a FASS Titanium95. I read all the reviews but frankly the horse trailers and 5th wheels aren't a problem in these desert mountains (digression). Have FSM, did install last weekend of both. Removed old filter canister and bracket (no going back, I shaved the bolts to match the others with no bracket) and removed old pump. Fuel line is just hanging. Taped and sealed each of the three connectors, then taped them together, then zip tied t…

The owner called me today and had a p0232 code. Truck runs fine but can't erase the code. Unplug the VP44 and still, the code remains. Now if he removed the fuel pump relay in the PDC it would erase the code but return instantly if the relay was plugged back in. This owner also admitted to having a BD noise filter as well. I told him to test the alternator for excessive AC noise. Back to the VP44 code, he mentions he had a second pump. So I had him just plug it in without installing the pump and the code erased and stayed out. So again another AC noise story that ate a VP44 because the owner was battling the torque converter lock up issue and ate the V…

Hey guys, Im set to move across the country in 2 days and I have been finishing up work on my 01. I took it for a shake down drive last night and everything was going well until (fortunately) right when I got back near my house. It starts to surge and stutter and wants to and does shut down. I took it for a short drive the other day and I had the same issue. I chalked it up the Hot Rod VP that WAS in it, because it was giving me a really hard time loping at idle and low load. I went ahead and switched out the VP for a DAP SO unit, since I had wanted to switch back to an SO anyway. I finished that up along with a new cam sensor, and she started and run beautifully. So…

Let me paint the picture. Monday of last week saw me begin driving ~120 miles/day to a new job. I filled the tank up on the truck that weekend. I had not topped up with 2 cycle lately, but had a residual amount in there that I felt was sufficient due to always putting in either 16 oz or 32 oz, just depending how close I was to 1/2 a tank or a full tank. Oil checked out good, trans fluid ok, etc. Good to go. Monday morning. 30~ miles in, hit a valley and as I start to pull up out of the hill, I can't hardly get her to go. It lacked power. It wouldn't downshift like it normally does when it grabs a gear to pull. The turbo wasn't spooling up. And it would sort of s…

Was out doing some running around this morning and had to jump out in to some traffic and get down on the right pedal. I was thinking I had a stock truck but happened to look in right rearview mirror and noticed some (not a lot) of black smoke. Is this normal on a stock truck or is that an indication that there is a programmer on the truck? Also, once I was in the flow of traffic I noticed the MIL was on. I pulled the code when I got to work and it's a P0234 which I read could be MAP sensor, stuck WG or an actual overboost condition caused by a programmer. Is there a way for me to know if there is a programmer installed? Also, I called Dodge to price a MA…

  10. Hey Guys, First post! I recently picked up an 02' Ram (in my signature) with the HO 245HP cummins and 6spd, it's got 100hp injectors and a 4" exhaust and no chip/tuner This last weekend, I went for a 250mile drive, and all seemed to be well and got back home sunday morning.Sunday afternoon, I was heading out for a drive and noticed some white smoke at idle, when warming up AND while warm while at idle. While under ACCELERATION/LOAD the truck will now put out more black smoke than usual. The truck was idling fine and nothing seemed out of sorts. Figured I'd pull a code so I quickly pulled over and checked and got P0234. I contacted the folks at BD diesel (they are local-i…

My truck is due for emissions so I removed my edge comp. When I started the truck the CEL came on and I have a P0237 code. It will not clear. I plugged the factory MAP sensor plug into the sensor and no change. I drove it around and it it runs and drives fine, no smoke. After driving it a bit the CEL went out but the code is still there (both pending and confirmed). I pulled up the "Intake Manifold Absolute Pressure" pid on my scan tool and that value seems accurate and responds to driving. I am going to go out and see if I can determine the voltage...maybe pull the MAP sensor. Any other ideas?

I'm working on diagnosing a P0237 code. I installed a fuel boss and primed the system by cracking the injectors resulting in fuel down the side of the block. Wondering if that could have caused it or I bumped something out of place. I removed the MAP sensor and cleaned it, appeared in good condition. Attempting to follow the steps : Though, my OBDlink mx is unable to read MAP voltage. I'm getting Mass air pressure readings, could the boost on the Quad be at fault? Going to disconnect the harness and see if I can get a voltage reading off the plug with the multimeter tomorrow.

Started truck this morning, was the 1st time it was cold enough for high idle to work since getting it enabled. Ran back in the house for a few minutes, when I jumped back in and stepped on clutch I realized I had a CEL. Of course I'm out of town so went to oreillys and it shows p0237/map sensor. Any suggestions where to start? It is way down on power too

Gents I need some expert opinions! I just had a p0237 code pop up. My truck is running very well and I just averaged 19.7 MPG @70 MPG on the freeway (hand math). Now I have done some preliminary research and I see it’s the map sensor.. I cleared the code and am running the truck. Unfortunately I have an elk hunt that starts Friday and I leave Wednesday morning (not much time for repairs). What causes the code? Boost leak? Faulty connections? If it comes on again I will be in a different state and it’s up in the mountains do I need to be concerned? As I mentioned above my truck doesn’t seem to be missing a beat but I’ve read the map sen…

Good day! I have a friend with a cummins 2000 4wd auto, about 230k miles and he’s got the following codes: P1693 (I know it’s a companion code) P0602 ( I think his smarty tuner throws this?) P0252 The truck cranks but does not fire, no fuel Comes when he cracks the injector lines, fuel pressure is about 19 psi at the Vp. Is the P0252 a typical death code for the Vp or is there something else that can cause this? Best regards Niklas Hansen

Code p0260 popped up today. Can’t find anything on it. Any help would be appreciated. My only symptom is surging at 35-45-55 mph. I’ve had that problem before which was just a loose battery connection but I’ve checked everything I could think of and all connections are okay.

  17. First off I'm new here but hope I can contribute in some fashion as well, 2ndly I hope everyone had a very merry Christmas. Now the truck then the issue. 1998 24v 3500 4x4 manual transmission. Mods are air box, full exhaust, hot rod vp44, air dog 2 165, edge juice CS w attitude, and the wiring harness mods listed on here. Ok now my problem.... driving the truck one day and it shuttered out of the blue didnt think anything of it and kept on going. A few days later it does it again and the tack dies, doesnt come back and I notice the levels on the edge dont work anymore and the truck is running bone stock. No codes or check eng during this time. Picked up wife t…

I recently went through the whole T/C lockup problem and found it to be a bad ground. I fixed the issue and no problems until today. It started going in and out of lockup in 3rd and 4th but not like it was doing before. Before it was at steady throttle now it does it at different throttle positions. Also I just got a P0336 code. My question is will a Crankshaft Position Sensor cause T/C lockup issues or am I getting the code because of T/C lockup problem?

Just picked up the truck from a buddy, it’s a 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 24v Cummins. Sold it to me for a good deal with one problem code p0336 no tach, causing a lack of power. He told me he replaced the sensor with many different brands, and got them ecm tested and the tach worked on bench. The oreillys brand sensor works the best, works for 3 seconds and tach dies. He called a mopar friend of his and he told him to get a cummins brand crank and cam sensor. I got a cummins crankshaft sensor and tach didn’t move. Recorded live data from my code scanner and my OBD2 is able to read my RPMs, but nothing on the dash. I’m stumped F56A5B3A-DC90-4989-9821-EF45AA449DC0.MP4
