2nd Generation Dodge 24 Valve Powertrain

This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

  1. I need some help. I run a 2001 3500 2w drive dually 5 sp pulling a 40 gn trailer. Starting friday afternoon, my truck would get sudden power loses, usually in 5th gear. It will surge several times then resume operating normally. I might drive several hundred miles then out of the blue it will start surging again. I depress the clutch to see if it dies but it just goes to idle. When it's running right there is no problem, no lose of power and no misses. This is what I have done to it since march, I've put in a new lift pump, we have some wiring issues to the lift pump which was corrected and the block pump is completely out of the picture. The lift pump is an in tank mode…

I have power loss sometimes. Sometimes going down the road empty I am at 50% throttle to do 70 mph and turning 1700 rpms this is when I have power loss. ALSO EGTS GO UP TO 1200 AND BOOST GOES UP TO 28 When running good I am at 23% throttle to do 70 mph 1700 rpms. boost 9 ish and egts 650 ish Things I have changed. All electronic sensors. Vp pump has about 20000 miles on it. Updated the programmer and re flashed the eco in the truck. This problem comes and goes. I can be driving down the road and all of a sudden it loses power. Then maybe the next time I drive the truck it will have power again but not always. Really not…

I was using Stanadyne Lubricity Formula for lube and a water demulsifier. I have recently switched to Super Tech 2 stroke for lube, but I still like the idea of a water demulsifier to keep water out of the pump. I do not want a water emulsifier, because that would allow the water to blend with the fuel and go straight to the IP. I would rather help the fuel filter/water separator do its job, than sneak water past it. Does Power Service, or anything else, demulsify water? Thanks :cheers

So guys. Have loss of power steering fluid (none left) . So Im guessing I need to pull the vaccuum pump/PSP assy out and reseal etc. However when I was thinking about it - I realized I dont get how the whole system works ...... someone shed more light ? Some questions. 1) Most people replace for the oil leak that occurs for the oil feed line to the vacuum pump. I'm sure I probably have this also ..... but I'm talking about loss of PS fluid in resevoir. So ? Do the seal replacements generally take care of PS side leaks ? Dont want to pull the assay only to find PS leak is something else. 2) How does this tie into larger system…

Hi all, Well I mentioned in my thread about injectors that it was finally time to re seal my vac pump because it had started really leaking. Seems I was wrong about the source of these new, and very sudden large puddles. Its PS fluid, and I can't figure out why, or where its coming from. Heres whats happened lately. Flushed PS fluid a couple months ago. Next, flushed fluid again to replace hydrobooster. At this point I was leaving drips, not puddles, from all the residual PS fluid all over the place from the two flushes. Next, I washed the underside of the truck to make sure I wasn't having major oil leaks. I went about a week seeing only a drip or two and sometimes …

Did a search, found no info on this. Can someone inform me as to how we do this? As I understand you remove an outlet hose and pump out old and pump in new. Any cleansers necessary? Where do indisconnect the outlet line and how to tell which is outlet?

This thread may not be in the right area, and I apologize ahead of time if it is? I have not heard of this problem on the board before but here goes,I live in Michigan and sometimes it gets quite cold up here, when my truck (200 CTD 2 wd) sits outside at work in the cold (it was 6* F today) and I start the truck I get a terrible growl from the power steering system. The noise seems to be from the fluid being to cold/thick?. Is this a common problem? Is there a thinner power steering fluid available? This afternoon I started the truck and let it idle for 1/2 hr before leaving work to try and warm the oil some to no avail.....The darn thing growled all the way home, 6 miles…

Hi all. I haven't been on here in several months. Was rebuilding my motorcycle. Anyway, it appears that my power steering lines are leaking pretty bad, and looking for any advice on best way to change them out. I'm not sure yet which one is leaking as I need to clean it up and take a better look. Is there anything special I need to know? Thanks.

Ok so I know we have the hydro boost on our trucks so that is why I dont want to tempt fate on this one. As for my mystery when I was up north last week I saw single digit temps about 5 degrees f. I went and started my truck to move it out of the way, it started fine but I had no power steering and a growl from the pump so I shut it off checked the fluid to find it on the full line and smelling terribly burnt (I should let you know now that before I ever travel 200 plus miles from home for work I check all fluid for levels and abnormal smells... ect. it was fine when I left) I went back to the cab fired it up and I had power steering so I moved it and continued working t…

Anyone know why I would have my power steering fluid overflowing? All was fine for 3 weeks without driving it (Driveway statue) and then one hot day it's coming out the cap. With truck sitting idle for 3 weeks, suddenly the fluid is at the top and overflowing.

My son`s 99 has been leaking power steering fluid from the gearbox for some time now, and due to:broke: ..he has just kept adding fluid.Well he just called after leaving for work this morning and said he does`nt have any power steering, and only has rear brakes.I`m pretty sure that repeatedly running the PS low on fluid has toasted the pump.I`m not exactly familiar with how the power assist works here, but I`m assuming that a new pump, gearbox, and steering shaft are now top of the agenda..

Hey all, hoping I can get some advice or an answer from somebody who has had this problem or knows a lot more than I do. Last night, I decided to flush my power steering system because my steering never has been great and I’m also sure it’s never been done (truck has 320k miles). Before flushing, I did the DIY hot rod pump mod because after reading and seeing how much people liked it I figured I’d give it a try. I drilled the holes to the proper size and location on my Bridgeport and made sure they were exactly centered. I cleaned the relief valve and reinstalled it as well. Next, I did the flushing procedure as described in the Haynes manual, removed both return lines an…

  16. ok.. guys well... my steering box showed me signs for a while it was on its way so i dont blame the box. It had developed a leak over a month ago.. Anyways, doing 60mph on an offramp getting to my house going around the curve, it decides to go. All of a sudden it shoots straight and had to correct it by almost a full turn on the steering wheel.. i made it through and steering was really loose and leaking a little more. i made it home safely. I really wanted to get this out there to you guys that like to live on the edge. I ordered a Redhead steering box and 4 Synergy ball joints ...ball joints have been bad for few months atleast. I was going to install th…

  17. So I'll start off by saying that I should have been more diligent on axle oil changes (once a year if towing/hauling heavy like most of us do)and that's likely what landed me in this position. That being said I didn't find anywhere on this site, articles about diagnosing, repairing or just general info. So at this point I have a chattering rear end but only on tight corners loaded or backing trailers, I tried the simple things new fluid new limited slip addative, to which I didn't gain much. Now my questions are: How much time do I have left before this thing grenades I only need two-three weeks. Rebuild the power-lok and if so what would be a rec…

  18. Having a strange issue that I'm trying to figure out and hoping one of you guys can help out? Just joined here but been a member of the other place for years. Anyway I've got the 2001 mentioned in my signature and I'm getting ready to take a 1200 mile trip on Friday, but having an issue with my truck that just started last week? Basically I randomly experience a total power loss, but the engine doesn't die. More like total loss off fuel or throttle control. Fuel PSI has never been an issue and is the real reason I bought the iQuad. Pump is tapped but rarely use it as I'm really just trying to run stock. I've been running with "0" level for the past few months and t…

I've been reading all about 2 cycle oil and now I'm wondering if anybody has experience with or can you tell me anything about how Powerup Gen49 fuel additive measures up. http://www.powerupusa.net It's supposed to be the real deal and I have a neighbor who sells it so it's real handy for me to get.

I'm thinking my heater block for intake is not working. Do you get any codes if this is the case. It usually came on in the morning in the past for maybe a few seconds in weather in the low 50's. It starts, but kinda sputters a little. Hoping to hear a little about what you think. Before it gets too cold.i found the article on grid heaters. Sounds like the temps lately have been on the bubble for grid heaters to come on. I'll wait for cooler weather for final diagnosis. But it's on my radar screen.
