2nd Generation Dodge Non-Powertrain

Discussion of the 1994 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel non-power train. This includes interior, air conditioning, heating, lighting, body, suspension, brakes, stereos, etc.

Good afternoon. I’m in the process of hooking up Autometer gauges on pillar pod. I’d like the lighting to illuminate and dim with the factory gauges. What is the best way to accomplish that?

I have a 1998.5 and have owned my truck for 13 years and only activated the RWAL twice and it didn't work both times. I now have a ABS light on and changed the sensor on the rear end with on joy. I have had it to all of the dealers within 100 miles of my house and it appears that their DRB111s can talk to it but are not functional enough to read the abs module or reset the tire size ( all if them looked really beat). My first question is there a way to determine if the module in the dash is bad or the hydraulic unit under the hood is bad. The second question is only because I am leaving on a 5000 mile trip in 8 days and I would like to kill the ABS light on the dash and s…

Hi all, First, thank you a million for all the awesome tech advice from this forum. The best one out there IMO. Here is my dilemma...Long story short, I had the truck a couple years with no idea that it had security on it. I always used the button and key to lock/unlock. The other day I inadvertently armed it (and then set it off) when I used the power lock button instead of the manual button. I had a spare CTM so I tried it and that did not get it running. I tried unhooking the batteries and that did not work either. I read a lot about the VTSS since then and tried a lot of things. I suspect I put it into "power up" mode by disconnecting the batteries w…

Had my alternator spin tested at an automotive electric specialty shop, he said the alternator tested great under all parameters. The shop stated allot of people come in with specific specs they want confirmed. My question is what exactly are the specs I should be looking for.

  5. I'm planning on adding some auxiliary lighting to my 98 & 1/2 2500 and while poking around under the hood I noticed that the existing fog lights (and presumably other lights) appear to use negative switching. For those who've been down this path before, do you think I should use negative switching for any new lighting or other accessories so that it's all the same? If so should I do this for the switches in the cab as well or just use positive switching at that point and use the relays under the hood to switch ground? I can do it either way but I have to admit that positive switching feels more natural to me. I'm just curious if either approach is likely to bite m…

  6. After I had a stent installed in my heart Nov 8th, 2023, I lost some muscle strength in my legs, which resulted in my left knee (7 surgeries) not liking the heavy aftermarket clutch in my 01 Sport HO 6 speed. I traded it for a different diesel 4x4, but I just traded it for this 01 Ram 2500 Laramie SLT long bed 4x4 with 4-wheel disk brakes and 4-wheel ABS. It has an actual 195k miles on it from the vehicle record I paid for, which shows the same number of miles on the odometer. It definitely hits a lot harder than the other 3 Cummins 4x4 trucks I've had before. It It has the following upgrades. 1. FASS 165 lift pump 2.…

I finally got around to installing my Geno’s dash top and junkyard dash core. This also marks the near completion of my interior color swap. The only thing I have left to do is paint the overhead console. I also installed a new pioneer head unit I had ordered several years ago as well. It’s so nice having everything on the dash attached to something else. I used a dash core from a slightly older truck which only has the one driver side power port. I didn’t realize my airbag switch wouldn’t fit so I hid it behind the dash and got the other power port from the junkyard that properly filled the hole.

Drove the truck to work last week, noticed the truck vibrating at 60mph. It went away when I sped up to get on the interstate. When I left work I noticed it at 35mph and went away by 40. It was off and on at 60 on the rest of the way home. Under load or coasting didn’t seem to matter either. It doesn’t feel like it’s in the steering, just through the rest of the truck. I did check the rear drive shaft and everything felt tight. I had the front and rear shafts rebuilt and balanced when the trans was built about 50k miles ago. The only thing I know is a little worn is my track bar, was mentioned when I had the trans serviced last year. The heat has kept me from…

  9. I have a 1999 dodge ram 3500 and i have no trailer running lights, ive verified with other vehicals its not my trailer and even used a clamp and spike style test light. Nothing at the pin for running lights when i have my trucka light switch on. I even traces the loom back all the way to under the drivers door right at the ffront wheel well the wire that feeds my trailer plug is a orange striped black wire. I found the wire up by the wheel well and tested again with the test light and still nothing. Was hoping there would be power then id just run a new wire from there back. Anyways after the wire loom makes it to the engine bay it teea off to the fues panel, into the cab…

  10. So basically i got myself a set of NHK projectors and retrofitted them into the autosaver 88 single piece headlights [non sport]. tested the plugs before i started building the harness. so after testing the pins i got : Low beam; pin1 12v pin 2 grnd, pin 3 inactive Hi beam; pin 1 ground, pin 2 inactive, pin 3 12v also noted that pin 1 is +12v even when headlights are off. So i built the harness and in the meantime something happened and now pin 3 is always hot. im over 12 hours into building the harness and this ****ery happens. im assuming a bad dimmer switch? the hi beam indicator still works which throws me off. pin 1 still acts normal switching from hot to ground when…

I decided a few months ago I am tired of messing with the factory fuel filter housing. It’s not easy to remove the lines when I need to, and even with new hardware it still leaks at the drain valve sometimes. I have a large auxiliary trans cooler/fan mounted on the frame rail as well as the Raptor 4G so I don’t really have room for a rail mounted filter. While weighing my options I came across this from GDP https://www.glacierdieselpower.com/collections/fuel-filter-systems-vehicle-specific/products/glacier-diesel-power-1998-5-2002-dodge-ram-5-9-cummins-mk-7-big-line-kitheated-mk79852-blkh It is pricey, but it retains use of the OE WIF plug and the fuel heater.…

So I've noticed a few times when I get back out to my truck from going in the store that my fog lights will be on randomly. Switch off, no headlights. Just fog lights. Any ideas what the cause could be?

  13. Started by hayman75,

Two similar questions figured I'd combine them. I've had this truck for almost a year now and in the process of fixing some minor and major things. First is the passenger side headlight has some play in it, enough that it can, at times, be noticeable when driving. The assembly itself has a threaded alignment pin on the back, see the attached picture for reference. When I wiggle it compared to the drivers side headlight, this appears to be where the play is. After removing the market light you can get a couple fingers back there and the driver side one appears to have some sort of retainer, a clip or something that hold this pin tight. Does this sound right? Since there is…

  14. Fired up the truck this morning to go to the tire shop for 4 new tires on the rear axle, got 1 mile down the road and the "check gauges" light lit up. Voltage low on instrument cluster. Thought maybe the 150amp breaker tripped in the charge lead. Nope, it was fine. Turned around and went back home. Pit a voltage meter to the stud on the back of the alternator and she read 12.8v. I guess it's time. Ugh!!! If it isn't one thing it's another!

  15. Started by Lund1990,

So I ordered a pack of LED cab lights last fall and just now I'm getting around to installing them after I got thr 2nd 1 on I realized that my truck has 6 cab lights. All the kits are for 5. So I was just wondering if having 6 was an option or if someone installed after the fact. The ones I'm removing seem to be factory.

Got totaled years prior Ripped out the batteries with the quadzilla still hooked up and it arched for like 6" or more till I got it high enough it stopped.. so without calling quadzilla do you guys know what's up there? Is it the ecm & wiring harness or one or the other? Where can I find new/remaned TIPMS???? I've been looking for awhile. I'm considering like local auto parts stores but I didn't find any new ones online... So I'm thinking like DORMAN / all those kinds of remanufactures maybe hopefully!!!! But if you have a direct link please post it !!!!! So I've found a few junk yards that say call for a quote on remande…

Hopefully now the truck is a tad more visible and won’t get hit a 3rd time.

For a week or two at least, lol. Back in December a gal made a wide turn and ran her mirror down the side of my bed and back door. It didn’t hurt the truck but it did mess up my wrap. The color I was using is no longer in production so the insurance is paying to have my whole truck wrapped a new color. I won’t say what color yet but the truck should be easier to see when it’s done as this is the second time I’ve had this kind of incident. They gave me a rental rig too, 22 Ram 1500 CC with a V6. It’s nice and all, but it’s no Cummins.

New to the forum here and really appreciate all the amazing info. I couldn't find this discussed before so figured I'd just ask. Does anyone have experience with the 3rd gen leaf conversion and specifically the kit built by Thuren? It's pricey but I'm seriously considering it as my truck is my daily and I'll never sell it so I don't mind spending on the absolute best. It sounds like the Carli full progressive leaf pack doesn't actually feel that much different compared to factory for most folks. Any info is appreciated.
