2nd Generation Dodge Reliability / Performance

This is a discussion forum of the 1994 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel of performance and longevity. This includes tricks of getting more MPG, HP/TQ, or just getting to the next milestone.

I just installed a new high idle switch and it reads the intake air temp fine but shows 188 on quad all time and cluster temp stays cold! The lights work when u switch it over to high idle but doesn't do anything there either. I emailed the support but its been like two weeks and no response!

Took the mighty Dodge on its first road trip today. Over 249 miles, in rain with lots of 65-45 braking for the first 90 miles i got 16.57 mpg. After the rain cleared we got free of traffic and had cruise set at 70-75 most times. Tried to data log but couldn't, I'll have that fixed for the return trip. I will get some data and hope some people here can help me with a tune.

  3. So I've made some real progress the last couple weeks. Truck runs pretty well and cold starts are much better now. Still have to harden the hardware to make it a daily driver. I got some open source schematic and PCB CAD generator program called KiCAD, seems to work pretty good. Had some install issues because I'm still using Win 7 LOL but I found an older version that works. I used to use Eagle CAD, not easy if you don't use it often and forget things like me. Got most of the sanity checks done and correlated with the usual DTC codes. Some took guess work there isn't much in depth documentation on them. Thanks to the MoparMan forum I fou…

Anybody made their own pop off tester? If so how do you like it? Digging around in my shed it looks like I'm real close with spare parts laying around...all except would have to buy a gauge. Any input good or bad for using a homemade tester?

  5. So I had lots of very hot weather to test the VP44 project. On a 103 degree day the controller hit 175 sitting in traffic with AC on and 120s while moving along. No problems it never missed a beat I'm happy about that I was a bit worried. I got one of those piezoelectric sensors that clamps around the injection line and had to build something called a charge amplifier and insulate it from ground and use a shielded cable to get rid of all the noise so I could see anything reasonable. Timing wise things didn't add up. I finally got frustrated and pulled #1 injector and used a dial pointer to mark TDC and made a pointer mounted to an oil pan bolt. …

ok quick question ....i know the 98.5 nv4500 from factory was supposed to produce 230 if i remember correctly ..so nowfor the question ...over time if nothing significant (broken pieces in the motor or drive train) can one expect to lose ....mileage is 295,543. The reason i ask is im trying to figure where i currently stand horsepower wise ....i know the only true way to know is to put it on a dyno ....unfortunatley none close/affordable

I have a 96 12 valve with a nv4500. I can hit peaks of 1600 degrees Fahrenheit at 38 psi of boost And it’s still climbing. The egts take off like that in 4th and 5th gear after 2000 rpm when I’m on it. It has a slightly bigger turbo, slightly bigger injectors, a #6 fuel plate, boost elbow, 4 in turbo back exhaust and and a cold air intake I’ve been driving it and pushing it like that for a year now not holding it past 1200 for any longer than a couple seconds I just don’t like spending more time looking at the egt gauge than the road btw the egt probe is mounted on the exhaust manifold. I’m thinking a different turbo or a better inter cooler or maybe a bit less fuel hope…

  10. I just installed my Edge Juice w/ Attitude and I am wondering how I can check to make sure I have the pump wire tapped properly. I don't want to run my JWA like an EZ. I wanted to go with the Stealth plate but I was already getting an earful about the money spent on the JWA so I just did the Posi-tap. Can I unplug the module and check the voltage at the harness if I trace the wire? Should I just put a stealth plate on, try to seal the pump wire back up and not have to ever worry about it again? There doesn't seem to be a good place to check the voltage with the posi-tap like their is with the stealth plate. Sorry if this is repeat post. This has probably been asked a lot…

I have no problem understanding how a mechanical pressure gauge works, but how does a mechanical temperature gauge work? Seems like you'd never get the accurate temperature to the gauge through a little tube that's not insulated.

Iam new to the diesel world,i read your article on adding 2 stroke oil for every fill up it says a 128:1 ratio, does that mean 128 ounces for every gallon you also said if you fill up 20-25 gallons you would put 20-25 ounces in?Iam a little confused on how much i should add to my tank.

So far, I have what it says in my signature. Intake, Exhaust, and 75hp Injectors. The transmission was supposedly "rebuilt" according to the guy I bought it from. I bought the truck with 196K last year in February, and now it has 226K. When I bought it, I installed a Superchips Flashpaq, and ran it in Tow Performance (40hp) all the time. I sold the Flashpaq and bought the 75hp DDP injectors. The transmission doesn't hook up very well until the torque converter locks. Once the torque converter locks, the truck pulls hard and does very well. Im looking to get into another chip, most likely an Edge Juice w/ Attitude. Im expecting that running the Edge with the injectors is g…

I just got my truck home from getting the tranny rebuilt and am thinking it might be time to add some horses soon. How much can I add? The guy that built the tranny was saying I could add 50 horse but not more. Talked about the possibility of breaking shafts. I was hoping I could hop it up more than that. He changed up the valve body and put in a twin disc converter which he said was rated for 900 ft/lbs torque. How much power would you guys say I could add?

I dont like to wax and dont think those waxes mixed in with the wash are much good. I usually wash with dawn dish soap about once a year. Waxing a different matter. Paint still looks good imo. Question, these things getting up in years, when does paint start to come off. I sometimes see 85- 90's degrees for about 1 month max. No paint peeling and no rust at present time. How often do you wax the paint?

So I have a 01 cummins its pretty much stock other than I have a 62/68/12 with a quadzilla on level 4. I currently have the defueling setting set to 35 pounds because I am on stock bolts but I just learned that drive pressure also affects the head gasket and the ratio needs to be 1:1 correct me if I'm wrong but that's what I've read. How do I figure out what that pressure is at and how do I fix it? In the future I do plan on doing 7x0.12 SAC injectors, DAP valve springs, Hamilton Extreme Duty pushrods, and ARP head studs. Whenever I go to do all this I also want to pull the head and get it surfaced and ringed if ringing is needed.

  20. I bought a tune for my quadzilla but can’t figure out how to transfer it over to my iQuad app
