2nd Generation Dodge Reliability / Performance

This is a discussion forum of the 1994 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel of performance and longevity. This includes tricks of getting more MPG, HP/TQ, or just getting to the next milestone.

  1. My truck came with the non gated Aurora 2000... so I don't know the difference. I'm sure I will either want to get a new turbo at some point or need one. I always read about folks messing with a gated turbo... I guess to achieve higher boost? If or when the time comes... will I want and appreciate a gated turbo or will I be so accustomed to a non and want another?

  2. Anyone have as much trouble as I have with these Quadzillas? Driving to work today and mine died and lost communication and wont come back on anymore. Checked my fuses to it and they're all good, even replaced them and still nothing. I have power all the way to it and even ignition communication and still not a peep. Really tired of all this, last time I sent it in I had to pull Quadzilla's leg to even look at in WITHIN warranty. Anyone know of any other custom tuning options for these trucks? Really tired of replacing a box every year. Thanks!

I blew my head gasket on my 12V'er over a month ago, and have been shaving away at the head since. I'm not going to pretend like I know what I'm doing, I just want to document what I've done. Some of these pictures arn't up to date, I'll update them as I get new ones. Taking pictures of this stuff have proved to be challenging. First things first. Now, here's a look at the factories handy work. Notice the difference between these two cylinders. I can't do any worse than that! Also note the horrendous lip around the inside of the valve seat blocking much needed air flow. Plus there is an excess of material around the valve guide. …

  4. Hey Guys, as you know I'm one of a few guys running a modified truck around here with larger injectors popped to 322BAR. So far the truck is running 100HP injectors a Dynamic Valve Body, and a Smarty. Current Smarty Settings are SW#7 TM3, T3,D4. The truck runs fairly well, and there is no smoke unless you really try. Even so its a light haze when passing. Ive played with the Timing and TM settings, and can say both have caused stalling issues at varying temperatures. However the stalling is alleviated significantly when you put the truck into Reverse for 30 seconds, then drop it into gear. I have over 2,000 miles now under my belt with these injec…

How many holes are in the stock injectors? I thought the stock ones had 5 and I just got some BD 40hp injectors part #1040275 and they only have 4 holes in the nozzle I was under the impression that it would have more holes for better atomization... As I was looking online to see if I could find any specs on the BD injectors I stumbled upon some injectors on Diesel Power Products... http://www.dieselpowerproducts.com/p-7530-dodge-12-valve-fuel-injectors-9070-hp.aspx more power then the ones I bought and 1/2 the price... Has any one used DPP injectors and if so what where the results?

My yearly test is coming up on Friday. I have been working hard to figure out how much fuel I can throw at the truck without causing visible smoke. I am allowed %20 opacity on lug down tests at 40, 50, 60 mph. This will be the first year I have run the Quadzilla during the test. I have my tune nailed down pretty well. starting % of 76 seems to be where there is next to 0 visible smoke in any situtation. Last year with the smarty on %50 power mode I ended up at %7 opacity, so I am guessing I am going to at in the 10%-15% range in the test. I can turn down the fuel more, but I want to try and pass with as much fuel as possible. It is also …

So I did a boost leak test on my 99 cummins found a t clamp that needed to be tighted. Took the tester to 25 psi. The gauge is slowly going down like .5psi every couple second. Did the soapy water test can't find anything. Can't hear anything. Is this normal to loose psi with it pressured up or should it stay at 25psi.

I have been dumping good bit of $$$ to make this truck the best it can be. I recently got the front end in order.. removing leveling kit, poly bushings in upper and lower control arms, new track bar, steering box and brace.. added a deep trans pan and gauge.. new injectors.. brakes and lines all the way around including the Chevy 1 ton cylinders.x What can/should I do to my truck for performance & reliability.. besides routine/preventive maintenance? That's a given.. Most importantly for towing my camper anywhere I'd like to go (long distance.) Getting an exhaust brake is high on my priority list. Other things I'm thinking about are.. an oil bypass sys…

This is very long winded, but I figured it would save a bit on questions in the comments, plus I tend to ramble. I’m not sure if this is the right place for this or not, if it is not I will be happy to move it. In late 2018 I bought a 2002 3500 with an NV5600 more out of necessity than want(wrecked mine and had to leave for a job) it had 160xxx on the clock. A few scratches here and there nothing crazy. It drove decent typical 2nd gen problems that I knew of non existent dash top, ac was questionable , small but noticeable oil drip. The money was right 10k I bought it. Now I’ve always been a Powerstroke guy not a Cummins fan. So I knew little and less a…

  11. Looking for injector/turbo upgrade for strictly towing. End goal is compounds but, id rather keep 5k into rebuilding the 200k mile engine if it needs it. I just purchased a 40' 2 car trailer that i use for my hobby demo derby and i will make multiple trips to New York to drop southern clean cars from my state of Florida to my brother. Ive upgraded a bunch on the truck since i bought it not even 9 months ago. I used Me78569 stock injector towing tune and it was great but was getting into 1250 on the egt temp gauge and Florida is super flat up north with the huge hills and grades i think turbo will be a issue. Most research ive done says a 62/68/12 is what i need with 100+ …

So I tow a 10,000# camper with a stock 3500 rwd. I have read that dual turbos afe better for towing. Why is this the case and wouldn't a larger turbo accomplish the same thing? Just trying to wrap my head around some of the concepts. Thanks

Ok, so I finally got my truck back on the road after having to get another injection pump. Hopefully nothing else major goes wrong. At this point, I've replaced every major thing that could go wrong (minus the pcm and ecm). But I digress. My latest problem is whenever I drive the truck, if I don't have the tuner set on a higher level, it bucks, sputters, and blows white smoke. I'm 95% sure it's tuning related. I'm getting great fuel pressure and flow, and my injectors have all new tips (I rebuilt and pop tested them myself at school), and seals. I'm not sure if my specs are in my profile, but here they are again: FASS 150gph pum…

  14. So I posted back in December that I was having trouble with mileage in my 01 3500, and 6 months later I still am. Engine load at 65-70 usually hangs out at around 32-35 if the ground is flat, and the way my tune is set up (just like what is recommended and also based off tunes you guys have made) I'll cruise at about 15* of timing. I've checked everything for drag and still have found not brakes dragging or anything. Bout the only thing maybe out of line, would be at idle after it's warm it'll stumble a bit, but it still maintains the 6-9% load, I even saw it at 12% with the AC on. So anyways, would I do any damage by setting my load limit higher to maintain t…

  15. Here's my story... You can't swing a dead cat on any cummins forum without hearing about fuel pressure to the dreaded vp44, I get it and after much reading understand the pay a little now or a lot later situation. So After installing a fuel pressure gauge (discovered importance from same forums) I was appalled to find out I had 8psi at idle and approaching 0psi at wot... Son of a.... Ok clam down, what's the next step? Swap out the lift pump, dooh it's in the tank and who likes dropping a fuel tank. I've reading endlessly about airdog etc pumps and think that's what I need but what about my pump being in the tank... And damn they're expensive. So here's what I did and …

Hi all, I'm the proud new owner of a 01 2500 ext cab 4x4 auto, I've been lurking around cummins forums for the past couple weeks and came across this one and seems a fair amount of y'all know what you're talking about? Not sure if this is were I should unload all my questions but here goes. First off I'm an absolute greenhorn when it comes to diesels in general so I don't even understand most abbreviations and lingo I've come across in most posts here, so please be gentle! I kinda thought I knew what I was getting into but maybe I'm over my head? I decided it was time for a power & torque upgrade to occasionally tow my 7k camper + toys and came across thi…

  17. Finally got around to redoing my A/C after sweating my butt off for a month. Replaced the Accumulator, Orface tube, and bought a clutched that worked from a buddy of mine, added refrigerant to it and the clutch isnt engaging when I turn on Max A/C and everything. My gauge is reading about 120 and according to my phone its about 82* right now. Anything helps, thanks!! Edit: I forgot to mention the 120psi is on the low side and yes I did evacuate the system for 45min.

This morning I started my truck and I am sitting a very nice 18psi at idle and 15.5psi at WOT, nothing wrong here just normal everyday stuff. Temp outside is 68*F around 2pm Just now I went to the corner store and I started my truck, mind you there is not hard start, and I noticed the fuel pressure is sitting at 12psi at idle and 10.5psi at WOT(for a very short run). Now the only conditions that have changed is the weather. It is currently 9:15pm outside and the temp is 30*F. Now I am hoping this is just because the temp difference is such a drastic change that the fuel is thicker? I also have a little less than a 1/4 tank in the truck. Is my fuel pressure this l…

Got to Mobil, they say they are the best. Go to Rotella, they say they are the best. Go to Amsoil, they say they are the best. Go to .... Well, you get the picture. What is THE BEST oil for our trucks? Not just the engine, I'm talking the engine, trans, rears and anything else that has a little puddle of lubricant in it. I have been running Amsoil 15-40 since the new engine, but cringe when it's time to change. - What are the benefits of synthetic vs. dino? - What is the best dino? - What is the best synthetic?

I see that Frantz is a advertiser here. Did a search and latest Frantz entry was like 2009. Any comments on their systems? Would it be advisable to install a fuel filter system under the truck on frame rail? Anyone install a oil filter system or transmission filter system on their truck? - - - Updated - - - Got tired of waiting for an answer, so searched for info elsewhere. Here is an interesting read. http://www.cumminsforum.com/articles/articles/18/1/Anatomy-of-a-Frantz-toilet-paper-bypass-oil-filter/Page1.html
