  1. That's a good thing to point out Mike. The truck does hold shifts so much better then before. I've only done a couple of my normal routes but it'll hold the current gear I'm in opposed to downshifting like it would with the stock trans.
  2. Yea absolutely! I wish I could've done it sooner but getting rid of the stock trans really changes the truck completely!
  3. Well just wanted to give me official take on the new trans! So a quick background of where I'm coming from in the diesel trans world... stock... just..... stock! Even power related stuff.... STOCK! So obviously, it was quite an eye opener when I hoped in Jon's stage 3 for the first time. Things that stood out the most for me was the overall amount of throttle needed to get the truck accelerating. To me it seems roughly about half the amount of throttle input is needed then before to get the truck moving the same. That slightly lower stall speed converter makes a huuuuuge difference. Next is the shifting. Started out a little firm shifting 1-2 and 2-3 but it's getting better. The more throttle input the smoother the shifts. I think a lot of this has to do with the xzt but even with that off, the shifting is still so much better. Once you get the xzt turned on it gets better and from what Jon's told me, it'll only get better the more power I throw at it. A couple things I wasn't really expecting was the 'coasting' seems to not be as 'coasting' as will the stock. I imagine that's because of the more stout internals aren't as loose as before or something, but definitely nothing negative. The truck also seems to idle a little deeper then before haha and it still has the stock exhaust! MPGs on the way out there were right at 20mpgs although I think that was slightly low due to the stop and go traffic I hit for a little over an hour going over Snoqualmie Pass but either way it was around a 360 mile trip and I was pulling into Spokane with right at half a tank. I imagine that my MPGs are at least the same or better now. Either way, if anyone's on the fence about getting their transmission worked on, do it! Just make sure you get it done right, Jon can get you squared away in no time.
  4. Hmmm seems weird. Almost sounds like @Me78569's quest to find his mystery noise!
  5. Was the sound there before or after all the newly installed parts? What size tires are you running? Mine seems to have a bit of a bounce over certain stretches of highway. Rather annoying but I think it's a combo of the road and my offer tires.
  6. Well look who finally decided to drop in! Haha It was great to finally get out your way Jon! It would've been fun to see a bit more of the process but like you said, but gotta keep the priorities straight! But from I was able to see I learned a lot and I appreciate the lesson so thanks for that and the new trans!! Anyways, got home way later then expected, not because of the truck of course, but everything else, so I'll let you all know how it is a bit later.
  7. Yayayayayayayayaaaaaaassssss Ive been waiting for this one. The rotsun is one of my faves
  8. Alright guys so the truck is officially done. Going to pick it up tomorrow. Jon was awesome enough to show me the process the little time I was there. Here's so pics I snagged. Cleaning up the reusable stuff All torn down The works done on the valve body Goerend flexplate Goerend 15ss About to head back under the truck I'll let you guys know how the 350mile drive home goes compared to the way out here, I'm pretty excited to say the least!
  9. Should be fine as long as it's in good order as dripley mentioned. Or if you're like me and have the part off and it's cheap to replace? I'd replace lol
  10. Good to see her still going strong! It's threads like these that restore my faith in these old trucks and why I got one!
  11. What were you looking at on genos that's 700? Borgeson has been out of stock everywhere for a while now. PSC just came out with a steering box for the 2nd gens but it looks like a monster, and the price tag fits.
  12. 2k for an intercooler!!??
  13. I think the overall difference is what Mike said. Even if a question is being asked that's been best to death, we still take the time to POLITELY point someone in the right direction, or offer help if their particular situation is slightly different from the norm. That was one of the main reasons I joined this forum and am more active here then CF. Posting 'use the search function' does nothing because if the person didn't even know or think to use that before, even after they did they'd still probabaly have questions. A lot of times people do use the search function and something doesn't really fit their exact situation so they want clarification. Thats why I feel these forums have so much relevance because with the age of these trucks, mundain and normal situations are all but that and so the need to get similar situations and experiences from other forum members is key in helping fix these trucks at times.
  14. Haha good ol diesel bros
  15. Not entirely sure how to take that but no, not supervising by any means. Just want to try and learn some things about the transmission from Jon if I can.
  16. Does one run cleaner then the other in general though? Like once they get big enough to matter?
  17. Well getting ready to head out this morning. I'll try and snag some pics of whatever I can while I'm there and keep you all posted with what I can or at least a recap once everything's done!
  18. Yea I think you never can tell with the stock trans. Some seem to hold up pretty good with mild tuners and others crap out at stock power. I think you'd put the trans out of its misery with the new turbo and injectors guaranteed. Heck, just this injectors might do it! I think the 62/65/12 is a work horse of a turbo from what I've read. If you don't ever tow you could probabaly get away with slightly bigger, but I think I'm going the same route as and run a 62/65 or 68/12 once the time comes.
  19. Yea that's basically the same thing I've been seeing. It just seems so sketchy lol! I'd hate to get some 7x.010s and then only be able to drive around empty or tow like 25mph lol! Those guys seem to say that you can do it all and EGTs will stay in check with just canbus but I don't know if I want to find out myself. Part of me is thinking of just going with something like 50-75hp sticks and then just replacing those when I go with a bigger turbo since they're 'cheaper.' You'll have to let me know how the truck runs with those bigger injectors. What turbo are you looking at getting? Also, what kinda work do you have done to the trans?
  20. Alright guys, I've been doing a lot of research and I think I've pretty much decided to go with what you suggested and get some 7x.010's. Two questions... 1. VCO or SAC? 2. Is it reasonable to assume that since I don't have a wire tap box (xzt only) and for now just the HX, that I shouldn't need to worry about EGTs unless I was really trying? Was reading the 'injector myth' thread on CF and everyone was saying .010's on a canbus box only make EGTs manageable. Definitely need to keep an eye on them when towing a bit heavy but still easily doable. So is this still true or do we more now then we did in that old thread?
  21. You shouldn't have issues leaving it. That's what JAG and I were discussing. Some people prefer to remove them, others leave them. Both seem to have very similar results, and if there are differences, they're way to minor to worry about IMO. I run the stock strainers in my stock fuel basket with a FASS 150 and drawstraw 5 system and have had zero issues pertaining to the strainer.
  22. I'll keep that in mind next time! Every time I had to get into the fuel lines, but fp gauge would be all over the place for a couple days until it finally settled out.
  23. Haha wonder if it was just air stuck in the system taking its sweet time to work itself out!!??
  24. Same as mine Do you have a level kit on yours? I can't remember if that 4th gen steering kit fits on stock height trucks.
  25. Gotcha, that's a nice comparison. I'll be interested to hear how they perform!
