IAT and MAP sensor
"Correct your high mark is outside plus 40 degrees so yes 140*F would be the highest you want. But you can play with 100-140*F and see what tinkles the truck fancy the most. Not all trucks and drivers are going to get optimal out of 140*F some might need lower. "

Smarty UDC!!
I concur with your thinking on the cold temp being an extra drag on all the mechanical parts that run in oil (engine, tranny & read end)I have noticed the same thing on a cold morning. It takes a long time for me (my body) to get warmed up and moving efficiently.

Can I run 5W-40 Synthetic Oil in a '99 24v?
5W is a lower viscosity usually for colder climates but a multigrade (i.e. 5W-40 or others) is suitable to operate in a broad temperature range.Just be sure the oil you choose is rated for diesel engine serviceI am guessing that the oil manufacturers may just be making their product suitable to cover the bases for both older and newer diesel engine requirements and therefore we are likely to being seeing 5W-40 replace the 15W-40 stock.

Truck is all fixed but no power steering...
I think if the shaft isn't damaged then the rebuild kit is the way to go. Much more cost effective than having to buy the whole pump.Talk about sticker shock if you buy the pump.

I might need to get another truck!
When I am in the air flying we judge the distance we fly not by the capacity of fuel we carry, but by the capacity of the bladder.I have one pilot friend that tells the story of a pilot that just didn't want to stop until it was time to fuel the plane. He installed a hose and funnel in his plane where the hose protruded out the bottom of his fuselage.

I wouldn't suggest getting the sender from Dodge because the sticker shock is bad for your heart.Try Geno's or Rockauto. You'll have money left over for Christmas.- Presentation
- Power is out...
I have installed a transfer switch at my place also. I have 7KW electric start diesel generator that is my electrical backup. This power will run my two wood pellet stoves, my two refers and freezers and misc lights, pumps and a microwave. Can't run the oven, electric stove or hot water heater. But I have a propane grill, propane cook stove and propane cook oven if the outage is a long one. Why I could even run my HDTV and use the computer to stay occupied. Longest outage we have had to deal with has been 15 hours so far.- Broke push rod white smoke after replacing
Ouch! Which truck bit the dust?- MPG's Reports
Ya, that is true but I am not sure that is worse than no top where you get all the drag from the open bed. With my driving style I just haven't been able to see any measureable difference either way. There is even a difference of opinion as to whether the airfoil or something like Airtabs really make any measureable different either. Will keep the back window clean and will help with the disturbance caused by passing large trucks at freeway speeds. It would be nice to find something that reduces the aerodynamic drag of these trucks enough to improve the mpgs.- I Plead Innocent, Your Honor!
Can't read the sign well at all so I am not sure where it is at.The Hwy symbol looks like it is a Intersate symbol to me and not a US or State Hwy symbol. Can't really tell what the number of the hwy is but I am thinking more like an even number because the even numbers run east and west- "built" 47RE woes
Maybe no one has experienced the symptoms you are having and therefore, don't have any input to provide.Sometimes the topic isn't of specific interest so people just rush through and don't respond.Seems like the thread has had a fair number of reads. :think:Maybe the tranny specialists haven't been on for a while?Maybe this is a test to see if through perseverance you will be able to identify and solve the problem yourself and thus expand your own personal knowledge and share it with others. Just my .- MPG's Reports
I have not able to see anything I could identify as an mpg improvement. It seems logical that the topper would eleminate the airflow swirling in the bed and thus help reduce drag on the truck. But I haven't seen it yet.Good luck on yours.- Newly Released Software for Edge Insight Monitor to now control Smarty PoD Tuner
Thanks John for the added insight. There is so much to know (so many possible combinations and characteristics) and understand that I sometimes wonder if I am making any progress.I haven't even begun to look at UDC yet, but can it be used under the PoD umbrella and would it even be desireable.- Newly Released Software for Edge Insight Monitor to now control Smarty PoD Tuner
Yes I played with it the last two weeks on my hunting trip to Montana. What is nice about it is that you don't have to pack the Smarty around and take the time to hook it up and load the changes you want. While I never tried the PoD feature with the Smarty you are supposed to be able to make adjustments on the fly. Not sure how that gets done while you are piloting the rig down the road at the same time. What I can do with the CTS is load the Smarty program I want (maybe SW9 if you like) and then adjust the power level of the program you want to use. So I have loaded SW9 (even though that is way more power than my truck can handle) and just crank the power level on the CTS down to 30% or 40%. The nice thing about the CTS SW is that you just have to have the truck stopped (not moving) and you just change the level by touching the adjust buttons on the screen (touch screen). Takes maybe 15 or 20 secs and then you are on your way again.Have to say that PoD program affects the shifting of your trans (auto). It makes the shifts at a higher rpm and you have to push the throttle more to get to the higher rpm and at any lower rpm then it doesn't shift unless you let up on the throttle. Like you would shift a manual, but it was more than a little wierd to have to do that with an auto.THe CTS doesn't allow you to change any of the other Smarty SW parameters (i.e., timing, torque management, etc.) only the power level. Therefore, if you wanted any other parameters (other than power) you would need to hook up the Smarty controller to make those changes. Another way to say this, is that once you load any of the adjustable parameters via your Smarty, then those settings remain through all the power level adjustments you would make with the CTS.The recent (I think May 2012) Smarty upgrades indicated a new base tune through all levels giving an increase in overall power levels of +/- 10% (in all bands) and a more linear distribution of power as well as better economy. So if I understand it right, my S6 PoD version now is potentially capable of not 170hp but maybe closer to 187hp. With that thought in mind I started the CTS PoD at 30% ( thinking this was likely to be somewhere around 50hp, since I had preloaded loaded SW9 onto my truck). I thought I would start there. First experinece out the gate was very flat response to the throttle. I had to use much more of the throttle stroke to get the truck to pull away from a stop. It felt like I was using half the throttle stroke to get moving when I pulled away from a stop. I thought I was having a dead pedal experience, but quickly realized that the PoD experience was not going to be a linear response on the throttle. (By design: the owners manual says it is not going to be linear). I drove to Montana (625 miles at the 30% PoD setting and then drove the return trip at the 40% setting.I liked the 40% level better than the 30% level because the truck was more responsive but it was still wierd to have to let up on the throttle to get it to shift as I was just driving to check my economy and was not accelerating to high rpms. I am guessing that If I cranked the PoD level higher I would get a more responsive throttle at the beginning of the pull away from the stop sign.I was not able to tell any difference in mpgs between these settings but to be honest I took it out of the PoD mode when I got home primarily because when I'm driving for economy having to take the rpms up and/or then having to let off on the throttle to get it to shift was just too wierd to deal with. But to answer your question the CTS SW does allow you to change the Smarty PoD levels without having to hook up the Smarty controller.- new dash and hvac box rebuild

I haul a slide in camper in my gen 2 truck. The weight (when loaded ) is slightly above 2500 pounds but it stands over 11 feet tall. The reason I mention that is the fact that wind drag is the major contributor to decreased mpg when you travel at higher speeds. As an example my mpg with the camper on has run between 10.5 when traveling into a headwind and up to 16.0 when traveling on flat level roads at between 58 and 60 mph.I also pull a 5000 pound boat and I can run down the road at 65 mph and get 16 mpg all day. The boat doesn't sit up in the airsteam like the camper and is more streamline shape. - P0522 Driving me crazy
